Peter Dinklage's most impressive 4 minutes.
loppy6612 May 2014
I don't have time to write much about this episode. However I loved it! One thing to remember though: The three last minutes of this episode was rhetorically and emotionally the best actors performance I have seen in years. These moments will make Peter Dinklage very famous! Nothing more to say apart that this actor will have a prosperous future, if he can stand on this level of performance. Not only his strength of speech, also his mimic and the passion of showing emotions was fascinating. If I have to imagine that this acting performance was shown in a series... my god... lots of actors still have to train so much in movies. 10 thumbs up!

Season 4's Finest hour (so far)
sirajq12 May 2014
I have really enjoyed this season of Game of Thrones, more so than the previous 3. And it's because of episodes like this.

The Laws of Gods and Men has topped the previous episode as Season 4's Best so far. We get everything in this. Action, Blood, Brimming tension, BRAVOS and some powerful, heartbreaking character moments. The pacing of this episode was consistent, the multiple plots have surprisingly yet to fall flat, with the audience getting some more Reek, if a little too much for our tastes in a deliciously creepy scene.Oh, and i have found that Peter Dinklage's (Tyrion Lannister) performances have been a little too familiar in the past season and a half, but boy didn't he bring it all to the table here. It was a compelling and powerful performance by Dinklage that made the final 10 minutes of this episode some of the most satisfying of the series.

On a whole, this is Game of Thrones at it's best. Sharp Dialogue. Tense action sequences, Stunning Special effects (for a television production) and a powerful ending. A Masterclass. Peter Dinklage... WELCOME BACK!

Best episode of the season, things are really starting to pick up.
OmarHartwellWhite11 May 2014
Great Episode. In my opinion, the best of the season. Game of thrones is an extremely complex series with a substantial number of characters and stories to tell. In this episode things seem to take a large dramatic step and things really started to heat up. Several of the main characters make major plays and things fall into place from events set in motion long ago. The writing for this series is so well written how they develop their characters into such great depth and they continue to become more complex and interesting. One of those in particular took such a dark dramatic turn from what it once was in the beginning of the series. The last 15 minutes of this episode alone makes it one of the best and features some of the best dialogue, writing and especially acting of the series.

Tyrion stands trial
Tweekums19 January 2016
Warning: Spoilers
As this episode opens King Stannis and Davos Seaworth arrive in Braavos hoping to borrow money from the Iron Bank; they don't get the reception Stannis expected but after an impassioned plea from Ser Davos they get their funds. In Meereen people are making their requests to their new queen, Daenerys, one is upset that her dragons have killed his goats another wants to be allowed to bury his father; a man she had crucified. Back in Westeros Yara Greyjoy leads a raid against the Dreadfort with the intention of rescuing her brother Theon; she finds a broken man who doesn't want to leave; he has no idea who he once was. Back in the capital it is time for Tyrion's trial; it quickly becomes apparent that all the witnesses are determined to see him found guilty; none more so than Shae. Jaime pleas with his father to spare Tyrion's life and he accepts, with conditions, however Tyrion's final act may render that deal irrelevant.

This episode starts well; we have frequently heard of the Iron Bank of Braavos so it was good to finally see it; Mark Gatiss makes a welcome guest appearance as Tycho Nestoris, the man who decides whether they get any gold. The scenes involving Daenerys were interesting enough as they show her as a queen getting involved in the running of the city rather than as the conqueror we often see her as. The episodes action was provided by Yara's raid on the Dreadfort; this was pretty exciting as well as showing just how broken Theon is; Gemma Whelan did a fine job as Yara making her believable as a warrior more than capable of leading men into battle.

The part of the episode that is most impressive is the final section where we see Tyrion's trial; Peter Dinklage is outstanding as Tyrion when he gives his impassioned final speech. The rest of the cast impress too; I particularly liked Conleth Hill's performance as Lord Varys, the only witness who appeared sympathetic to Tyrion and Pedro Pascal who plays Oberyn Martell. As this scene, and episode, ended I was left keen to see what will happen to Tyrion; can't wait to watch the next episode.

Dwarf has made it big!!!
himanshudhumash12 May 2014
Finally, he gets to do what he is best at. Tyrion Lannister is a fighter, stood against all odds and smarter than anyone in the seven kingdoms! The episode was something "edge of the seat" thing. Unlike previous episodes of the season, this brings to the fore a more character in the GOT. Good to see the Bravvos for the first time and a power packed performance by Ser Davos, a brilliant & convincing speech. The episode was a delight, in short!! Looking & hoping ahead more episodes matching the same standards. Besides setting a benchmark for the forthcoming episodes, this one has also given an indication, yet making it extremely secretive, of what lies ahead..yes!! More drama and more suspense, and I bet no TV series has ever gone this far to make its audience cling to their seats and waiting for Sundays to come. I could not resist thinking of what would be the next turn of events...I am not an ardent watcher of the serials but GOT has really got me this time for which I would be glad for my entire life. Tyrion you are all time favorite man!!!

It's all happening
sharky_5511 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I absolutely love the title sequence and love watching it change every time, and the Braavos one with the Titan is perhaps the most impressive one yet. Great visual effects, and including the gorgeous overhead CGI shot of the city in the opening scene, rivaling that of Meereen's. It's a testament to how big this show has gotten.

Being a fan of Sherlock I was interested to see how Mark Gatiss would do as the Iron Bank representative. His calm aloofness is perfect for representing such a powerful company, and I feel Stannis is finally hitting his stride as a character willing to do anything to win the Iron throne. Ser Davos, however, was the one who stole this scene. It's telling how honourable and dedicated he still is to Stannis' claim. It's a cutting critique of the condition Westeros is in under the Lannister rule, so easily tipped into chaos by the smallest imbalance.

Yara's monologue over his love for Theon, the prince of the Iron Islands was a very powerful bit of dialogue and set the tone for the rescue attempt. The score at the same time quickens and adds to the tension, making for a very emotionally charged reunion. Alfie Allen is hands down the best actor of this show. His portrayal of Reek is finally complete as he painstakingly begs his once sister to leave him alone, not even able to comprehend the thought of escape. Overall, the end result was a bit anti-climatic, although it may be a sign of Yara recognising how Theon was beyond repair. Iwan Rheon doesn't miss a beat as the psychotic Ramsay. It's chilling how they can make something like a bath so threatening and foreboding. I was on the edge of my seat waiting for some torture device hidden in the water.

The clear and sunny scenes over in Essos make for a nice change from the dark dungeons and rooms of Westeros. More the better for the CGI to flourish, and that it did. Such a powerful scene showcased just how immense and frightening Drogon can be, and how large he is already. The introduction of Hizdahr was quite telling as it is the first sign of Dany making a mistake. She may in time learn of the consequences of her takeover of Meereen and her stance on slavery.

Oberyn is a fan favourite and rightly so. Small things like not rising for Tywin show he is still at odds with the Lannisters and Tywin knows he cannot rebuke him for it, or risk starting a war. It's quite contrasting how everyone on the small council bar Cersei is worried about Dany over in Meereen, she is still as naive as she was last episode. The talk between Varys and Oberyn was interesting as they traded blows, and I get the feeling that Varys is doing much more behind the scenes than he accounts for.

But the big scene everyone was waiting for was the trial of Tyrion. What a tense moment set up in the great hall and how crestfallen Tyrion looks after so much jail time. It's a nice little speech by Tommen to establish that Tywin really is in charge of orders, symbolic of him sitting on the Iron throne.

A great callback to the slapping of Joffrey after the riot in season 2 and all the other ways in which Tyrion ruled over Joffrey as hand. It's utterly staged towards Tyrion being made in bad light and his chances diminished with every testimony. Even more damning is the evidence of Dontos and the necklace of Sansa. It's a nice touch by Littlefinger to leave that to further incriminate Tyrion as the accused. We flashback to Blackwater and Tyrion's threats to Cersei after capturing Ros, which set up the shocking reveal of the whore Shae to betray him.

The look on Tyrion's face as she walked in was heartbreaking to see. Even more so after she swears to tell the truth, then blatantly lying and backstabbing him. And Tywin telling her to reiterate that she was a whore only made it worse when looking back at their relationship and how it disintegrated.

Keep your mouth shut, no more outburst, Jaime said. But Peter Dinklage should take a bow for the following confession. The hatred on his face as he announces his hatred for the populace was stunning, and his guilt for being looked down upon as a dwarf. His absolute rage and delirious joy at watching Joffrey die is perhaps the best acting I have seen in this show yet, and his delivery of the final line was perfect in its loathing and malice.

What an absolute brilliant episode. There was no scene wasted, no spare line of dialogue, no holds barred as Tyrion escalated his trial to a whole other level of tension. I eagerly await next week.

Best Actor in Game of Thrones
aseem_matrix12 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
By far Tyrion Lannister for me is the best character played by one of the best actors in this amazing TV Series and this specific episode 6 of season 4 is one of his best work in this series. I wait 6 months to watch 4 months of Game Of Thrones and Peter Dinklage's acting is worth every minute of these 6 month wait time. Won't post any spoilers every episode is worth watching usually Episode 4, 6 and 9 are the Key of the season as per me. It will be wrong of me to take away credit from other actors, especially all the villains, as they have act very well for their character to be hated. I have watched the scenes of this episode over and over and still can't get enough of Peter Dinklage's dialogue delivery.

Peter Dinklage's epic moment makes this episode worth it! Warning: Spoilers
The Laws of Gods and Men is where things started to get real in this season! Not only is it even better than the last three episodes, which were great but not nearly as excellent as the first two, but it raises the stakes for Tyrion Lannister to either be proved guilty or innocent after the death of King Joffrey in episode 2. Take for instance, the court scene where Peter Dinklage gives out the most epic speech in the entire show with this quote.

"I will not give my life for Joffrey's murder. And I know I'll get no justice here. So I will let the gods decide my fate. I demand a trial by combat."

That line made this whole episode worth it. Everything else is still awesome. The storyline and script are still well-written, the dialog is even more compelling, the pacing's tight, the directing is fresh, the scenery and sets are still lavish, the characters and the relationships still shine, and the music score particularly in the background scene in the court is terrific. So, overall, another classic episode thanks to Peter Dinklage's epic performance.

Peter Dinklage at his best!
silk212826 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
As good as any show gets, I don't think Tyrion Lannister finally shouting his frustrations at his father, sister and the whole of Westeros beats it all. You really feel the weight on his shoulders and then the break as his beloved Shae testifies lies at him. Jamie proves to be a loving brother but it is not enough. Honestly, this episode is even better watching it multiple times.

Tyrion's hearing is finally underway and it's not as satisfying as he hopes.
champion_qusai9 January 2015
Best episode. The writing, the directing, the intense drama and most of all the standout acting by Peter Dinklage makes this episode the best of the season. Thoroughly improvised, so I've heard, and beautifully written. Shae delivers the performance of her role and gives the proper support to Tyrion Lannister's breakout scene. It's exciting to see the events that lead on from this episode. Tyrion's outburst is the highlight of the entire episode. On the other side we see The City of Braavos.

A must-watch episode of the series.

The End didn't justify the Means
bobbybits13 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Outside of Peter Dinklage whose performance was absolutely outstanding in the Trial's final moments which will lead up to the correct course.

The rest of the episode was haphazardly strung along so far away from source material. The pieces hardly fit at all, how will any content now follow the books? Hard to say with this being made up as it goes along leaving gaping holes along the way.

Outside of the obvious: Why didn't they silence the damn mutts, knock Reek out when being such hard bastards and sling him over their shoulders. This content is far away from source, she will go back home with his tail between her legs without him after setting off on her grand quest of recovery? The Bastard had wax on his chest after passionate sex, why didn't we see this act.

Deanery's court: Had absolutely nobody in it? This is right after she has just conquered all of slaver's bay, single file only lads is the way to address this novice queen. She will pay for sheep but what of the boy? Crucifixion must have been an almost instant kill with a nail through organs in the stomach bleeding out in hours, rather then dying slowly for days. Although really watches as they topple of any posts, because they can wrench their hands free. Aside Hizdahr and the arena?

Stannis will now pay the Night's Watch? Instead of showing the power and manipulation of the Iron Bank, in a tedious scene which potentially rob us of any later scheme's. Unless another representative has to chase down interest because that is how banks work. after loaning for a victory. When King's and their rich Houses are still on the throne having the ability not to default so coherently.

Last week don't get me wrong, the fight was great against some nobody cut throat. Who would have simply cut her throat first rather then get shafted.

This episode the trial was awesome Dinklege was epic, the evil dwarf because dwarfism is such a crime. Easy to see where this story leads from trial by combat.

Come on now mostly away from material.

Sensational defense by Tyrion
sr9109216 May 2014
Episode #6 was 'the best' episode of all the seasons of Game of Thrones. It was a sensational speech by Tyrion in his defense. It was simply out of this world, fabulous speech. I felt goose bumps like never before. I have put up a wallpaper on my laptop, on my phone, on my tablet of: "If Tyrion dies, we all will riot" Hail Tyrion!!. There has never been such a great show ever before on this Earth. Game of Thrones smashes all the records of other shows as expected. I would like see no end to this show, it should run eternally. I hope Tyrion gets justice and the sinner gets his punishment. But most of all the things I am relieved is that now King Joffery is dead, he was no way near of title, 'A Noble King'

Stunning, as always.
bruno_zamrey11 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This episode begins with a soft but tense scene: Stannis visits The Iron Bank of Braavos, and, of course, with Davos helping him, gets the money. Stannis is going to reborn from ashes? It was easy for Dany to conquer the three cities of the Slaver's Bay, but will she be capable to rule Mereen without creating enemies? Will she domesticate her dragons, so they can stop bringing trouble? The rest of the episode focus on Tyrion's judgment, one of the most fake events of the Seven Kingdoms, Cersei had it all set up, along with Tywin, Varys, Meryn, Pycelle and, for the public's surprise, Shae. Tyrion reveals what he's been taking for so many years: the fact of being a dwarf, of his mother's death after his birth, and all the plan that practically everyone in the court was ruling against him. Game of Thrones keeps itself very realistic - and fictional too, that's the interesting things about the series, what makes GOT's heart beating. Congratulations, cast, staff, and George R.R.M. And thank you for another stunning moment of entertainment.

Another Saturday night, Another great episode
ahmed_dfsf12 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
It's about time!!! . The bastard son of Valyria, "Braavos" makes it's first appearance on screen as it also becomes the part of the opening sequence of the show "Dat Titan of Braavos tho" . Braavos is famous for many things , one of which is the Iron bank. The bank is known through out to provide gold to Westeros and fund in wars, The reason why Stannis visits the place. The man wants the throne real bad. Also it was such a delight to see Mark Gatiss play the braavosi banker. The conversation was well scripted and much better played by the three actors. So, yeah The bank finally decides to fund Stannis after Davos shows the banker his plucked fingers which Stannis took for his past crimes as a smuggler. Well, if only that could work for me in a bank. Will this gold be enough for the man to make a big army and get a bunch of ships ? , well he certainly got the pirate Salladhor on his side. All we need to do now is wait for the show to tell us if the brother of Robert really does win the iron throne.

What would you do if your brother is being torn apart from both the outside and inside? Well if you're an Iron born you would definitely take your best men and get your brother back. (This is just if you're a woman ). So Yara Grejoy travels from the Iron islands to Dread fort to save her baby brother. It goes well until she meets Theon. OH! Did I say Theon? .. How silly of me , I meant Reek. Yes that's right Yara your precious little brother is dead. Tormented and brutally mutilated , Ramsay has made the prince of the Iron islands his play thing. Theon would have ran away with his sweet sister but Reek, Reek has no sister, only a master for whom Reek must do whatever he asks. So Yara and her men have to run away from the place after Ramsay releases his hunting dogs on her. The sister now believes that "Theon is dead"

Yayy Dragons....... Yayy Drag..... Yayy D.... Ya.....Y ... So finally . Finally!!! We got to see a dragon. But not as expected to be seen. Of course a dragon is a monster , having no sense of right or wrong "Can't be Tamed" according to Ser friend zoned. The Shepperd was unfortunate or maybe he wasn't . Well! At least he got a huge sum of money for the price of food Drogon took from the Shepperd. Also we got to see Hizdhar , Yes Hizdhar!! .. Oh . Oh yeah, so Hizdhar is the lord from one of the oldest houses in Meeren. The man tells the queen that his father was a good man and so on... Asking to give him a proper funeral and so on.. What I really want to talk about is the throne room. Yes! What a set!! . A miniature version of the throne room in the Red keep, with Daenerys sitting high. Well done guys! , I'm sure the book readers weren't disappointed at all by the creation of this set because it is almost the same as GRRM wrote it in his Novels.

The little chat between "The spider" Varys and "The red viper" Oberyn was quite deep I thought. It held and hid a lot of secrets and thoughts which we didn't realize. Well, Not yet. Especially the last thought of Varys , when he speaks about the pursuing of dreams and gazes upon the iron throne. Let's wait and see what yet remains unseen.

The Imp is back. Exactly! Tyrion of the house Lannister is called upon trial by his lord father "The hand of the king". After each of the witnesses are called upon and asked to speak. Meryn, Pycelle, Cersei and also Varys did not fail to kill the dwarf's hope for that he might yet live. We have all started to like The king slayer now. He loves his imp of a brother and asks to form a deal with Tywin and give up king's guard only if the father spares his son's life . The deal is made and Tyrion's to be sent on The wall. BUT!!!! The little hope left in Tyrion is taken away as his lover Shae appears and starts her confessions against him. Heart Broken and losing all hope. The actor Peter Dinklage comes alive in Tyrion. Peter you beauty!!!!!!. What a moment that was. When he starts confessing of his crimes as an imp and outrages on everyone present there. That dialog could not have been played better . Hats off to the amazing actor , he should have won an Emmy right on the spot. So the final moments of the episode come to an end with Tyrion demanding trial by combat and rains of castamere being heard by the viewers. Well done producers. WELL DONE. They just keep delivering every Saturday night with another master piece

The laws of Gods and Men
dundy_pura_711 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was equal to the episode from Breaking bad called "Ozymandias". At the start of the episode it was pretty interesting how Sir Davos did his speech and it's performance was great. A little after there was a small scene with a dragon which wasn't really anything special, but you could see the dragon again. After the dragon and the beautiful battle at the Dreadfort there was one scene that made me cry out of joy. The acting performance in the last 12-15 minutes was perfect. How Tyrion reacted on that trial and the emotions that were released in that last scene.... The only thing i have to say is that you need to watch it Now! This episode surely lived up to the name Game of Thrones.

The Trial
claudio_carvalho17 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
At the Dreadford, Yara Greyjoy and her men invade the castle to rescue her brother, but she discovers that Theon is completely brainwashed and telling that he is Reek. Yara leaves him behind and returns home. Daenerys listens to the petitions of supplicants and takes decisions. Stannis and Davos go to Braavos seeking a loan. Tyrion's trial begins and Jaime makes a deal with his father to save his brother. But when Shae is summoned to testify, Tyrion is totally devastated.

"The Laws of Gods and Men" is a great episode of "Game of Thrones". Yara finds that her brother is mentally broken by Ramsey's torture. But the best and most dramatic part is the trial of Tyrion. The surprising testimony of Shae is impressive. My vote is nine.

Warning: Spoilers
One of the best episodes of the show and by far the best episode for season 4 so far, but the episodes just get better and better and at this rate i'm sure the season finale will be something truly special. The way that the suspense is held right up until the last moment is truly a wonder and when the episode ended I was just starring at my screen because of how breathtaking the final scene was. To summarize just how good this episode was is a mix of the battle of black water bay and the red wedding because it kept me on the edge of my seat for the whole time. The court case was not the only great part of the episode though, when stab is first travels to the east and meets with the owners of the iron bank the visuals were breath taking. I can't wait until the next episode comes out.

Outstanding performances; outstanding episode.
Scottdbentley12 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
"The Laws of Gods and Men" is one of Game of Thrones' finest moments, further advancing four story lines, it feels that every minute was well- used, this episode.

We open with a fantastic view of Bravos, and an always unimpressed Stannis. It's excellent to finally see his story progress, having seemingly spent a lot of time licking his wounds on Dragonstone. An excellent performance from Liam Cunningham (Davos) allows Stannis to successfully win some money, which leaves me eagerly awaiting the next step in their storyline, in rebuilding his army and claiming his throne again.

Next, in a perhaps anti-climactic scene we see Yara attempt to rescue her brother, but we see how deep the scars run in Theon, when he denies that he wants to be rescued, and wants to remain with Ramsay as "Reek". It was a good moment of action in this otherwise story-driven episode, and the scene where Ramsay bathes Reek is their best performance yet. Ramsay creepily and sadistically admires the "work" he has done on Theon's body, and the acting is so well done in this scene, that we see how a relationship has developed between the pair. Whether this is genuine, or a charade born of Theon's fear of Ramsay we don't know, but it shows the effect the abuse has had on 'Reek'; especially when he is asked to pretend that he is someone else for Ramsay's task - Theon Greyjoy, a now distant, forgotten personality.

At last, we get so see Daenerys be a Queen. And it was not all she thought, having to sit through endless supplicants, she realizes that having a throne was not all she thought it would be. The small council in King's Landing however awards her threat (Unsullied and Dragons) the same complacency given to the White Walker threat in the north, that it cannot harm them because it is so far away.

The best moment of this episode came from Tyrion's trial, for the murder of King Joffrey. The performances from everyone are fantastic as always, in this scene that keeps very true to the books. We see how once (slightly) trustworthy characters, even Shae, are manipulated by Cersei to alter the truth and use it against Tyrion in their testimonies, which erupts in one of Dinklage's greatest performances yet, and one of his character's greatest speeches, in which he rightfully condemns all of those around him, and confesses only to the crime of being a dwarf, before demanding trial by combat, leaving us wanting more.

An overall exciting, plot driven episode, with the usual excellent performances from the cast. One of the best episodes of the show so far, perhaps only beaten this series by "The Lion and the Rose".

Look Where We Are Now
iansmyth9512 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
If last episode was showing viewers "look how far we've come", than this episode was surely showing viewers "look where we are now".

Game of Thrones has grown steadily season by season to the point now where it's teetering into becoming the juggernaut it almost is. What started out as an ambitious project with modest ratings has turned into HBO's biggest show since The Sopranos and televisions most earth shattering project. GoT has torn away traditional television forever and showed us that with enough investment, time, and patience even that most ambitious projects can find an audience and the often sought after combination of mass and critical acclaim.

The Laws of Gods and Men was a big episode, both plot-wise and location-wise. The opening shot is that of Braavos, home to the Iron Bank and some gorgeous fictional architecture that could only elicit a single 'wow" from me. It was packed with other "wow" moments; Meereen has never looked so good and Dany's throne room looks absolutely incredible (as well as all built by production designers). Her dragon rising out of a valley and roasting a field of lambs was incredible and a testament to how big the show really has become.

The plot starts to move forward rapidly from here, with the Iron Bank now funding Stannis to eventually conquer the Lannisters (we presume, although there are other threats above the wall Stannis has his eyes on...) and Yara helms a failed rescue mission for Theon, who's now been completely transformed into Reek, Ramsay's personal servant.

Everything builds towards Tyrion's trial on the second half of the episode, which was the stand out scene and the one people will be remembering this one by. As a callback to Season 1, Tyrion ends his trial by demanding he fights for his freedom in front of the eyes of gods and men, after being berated by former enemies, allies, and his lover to eventually lead the room to believe Tyrion really did kill the king. Peter Dinklage's outburst and monologue was the best scene of the episode and was a great way for him to show off his acting chops, which we've been missing for a good chunk of the season.

All in all this episode really pushes things forward and the new direction the show's heading is becoming more apparent.
