Last year’s top-rated Israeli drama, according to seller Keshet International (Ki), has been acquired by the streamer in Europe, Latin America and the U.S., as well as non-exclusively in Israel. Starring Rotem Sela (The Baker and the Beauty) and Yehuda Levi (Fire Dance) as a childless couple who enlist the help of a surrogate (Gal Malka), the intimate drama – which also stars Lior Raz (Fauda) – stimulated national debate in Israel about fertility, family, and the autonomy of women’s bodies.

One of the few Israeli delegates who attended last week’s Mipcom Cannes has said he made the trip because “we will not let them win.”
“Hamas wants to stop our personal, professional and business life,” Dori Media boss Nadav Palti told Deadline on day one of the market. “And if we didn’t come then I would feel like they have won because they are trying to stop our daily life. This is why I go to all this effort.”
Some 70 Israelis were initially expected in the south of France but this number ended up being in the single figures following the brutal Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, which led to around 1,400 civillian deaths and 200 people being kidnapped, the majority of whom are still being held captive.

The Screenwriters Guild of Israel (Sgi) has slammed the WGA for its silence over the conflict raging in the nation.
Sgi Chair Nadav Ben Simon is understood to have contacted the guild’s 600-strong member base yesterday with a statement, which has also been posted on X (formerly Twitter).
The statement, which can be read in full below, blasts the WGA for failing to “find in their hearts enough courage to speak out against a terrorist organization that is currently holding 200 hostages, some of them toddlers and babies, snatched from their cribs as their mothers were raped in the same room in front of their eyes.”
“Your silence is considered a stand,” adds the statement. “It is a shame that a professional writers’ guild cannot reach a consensus and find the words to condemn an act of terrorism, an act of unprovoked crime against humanity, against innocent civilians, women, children,...

Nadav Palti is about to mark his 20th year as CEO of Dori Media, the prolific Israeli production and distribution firm headquartered in Tel Aviv. Earlier this month, Palti and Dori executives from Argentina, Mexico, Switzerland, Spain, Singapore and other locations were busy preparing to bring the company’s largest-ever slate of TV shows and movies to pitch to global buyers.
Everything changed on Oct. 7. That day marked outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas after the start of a Hamas-led terror campaign in Gaza that has left more than 1,400 Israelis dead.
Palti has a 34-year-old son in the Israel Defense Forces reserves. Palti himself served in the Idf from 1977 to 1982, rising to the rank of commander. The elder Palti, who was named Dori Media CEO in 2004, wrestled with the decision on whether his company should drop out of the annual Mipcom conference and market held this week in Cannes...

Turkish producer Onur Güvenatam founded Ogm Pictures in 2019, and has since shepherded a steady stream of hit series and movies such as drama “The Red Room,” the widely-sold “Golden Boy” and “One Way for Tomorrow,” the first Netflix original film out of Turkey.
For Netflix, Ogm has also made Turkish original film “Paper Lives” and the series “The Gift.” Güvenatam is at Mipcom with new shows “Stickman” (Çöp Adam), “Miracle of Love” (Yüz Yıllık Mucize), and “Broken Destiny,” (Toprak ile Fidan) being sold by his recently launched in-house sales company Ogm Universe.
He spoke to Variety about the secret to Ogm’s success, and vented frustrations about the business model imposed by U.S. streamers.
“Golden Boy” was the most-watched television drama last year in Turkey and has been sold to over 100 countries. Why does it connect so well with audiences?
It’s about two young sisters affected by marriage.

“Maudie” director Aisling Walsh describes her upcoming feature, “Ethel,” in recognizable terms. “We all understand what it is to struggle to be the best at what we can,” Walsh tells Variety. “We’re all looking for that chance to make something happen.”
Written by Celeste Parr, produced by Marie-Claude Poulin (“Brooklyn”) of Sphere Media, and presented at this year’s Venice Production Bridge gap-financing market, “Ethel” tells the true story of Ethel Stark – a trailblazing Canadian musician who broke barriers when she founded a mixed-race, all-female orchestra in the 1940s. A violinist and conductor, Stark eventually brought her Montreal-based ensemble all the way to Carnegie Hall, becoming the first to woman to conduct there.
“Shtisel” and “Unorthodox” lead Shira Haas is attached to star – as revealed exclusively in Variety – with the Canadian-Irish co-production aiming to shoot next year.
“The film is about women finding their voice,” says Walsh. “The orchestra changed their lives.

Yes Studios, the Israeli producer and distributor behind “Fauda” and “Shtisel,” has boarded “Unsilenced,” a six-part series about sexual violence which is inspired by Odelia Carmon’s novel “The Confidante.”
The multi-layered series stars Yaakov Zada Daniel (“Fauda”), Avraham Shalom Levi (“Shtisel”), Nelly Mira Rubin (“Fire Dance”), Dana Meinrath and Irit Nathan Benedek.
Loosely inspired by actual events, “Unsilenced” is set pre-#MeToo, in the early 2000’s, when powerful men could readily mask and perpetuate abhorrent behaviors with the help of people they installed around themselves.

All three seasons of the acclaimed Israeli drama Shtisel, Nickelodeon sitcom Big Time Rush and Oscar winner Brokeback Mountain are among the titles leaving Netflix in March 2023.
Shtisel, which follows a Haredi family living in an ultra-Orthodox neighborhood in Jerusalem as they deal with love, loss and daily life, was a hit on Israel’s Yes network, drawing in viewers and awards locally. The series also seemed to attract an audience in the U.S. once it started streaming on Netflix. All three seasons are set to exit Netflix on March 24.
The next day, fans of the Nickelodeon sitcom Big Time Rush, which launched the band of the same name, will have to bid farewell to watching the bandmembers’ fictional antics from 2009 to 2013 on Netflix, just as the group recently reunited.

A landmark 45M shekel (13M) tax rebate for Israeli TV and film productions passed into law at the very last moment before the government collapsed this week.
The rebate, which was first introduced late last year and applies for two years after approval, will provide 30 of the budget to shows or films made for a minimum investment of 500,000 shekels. Overall, it is worth 45M shekels (13M) across the first two years.
Funding can be obtained through an Israeli production company and the cash will only be made available for TV drama, film and documentary.
The Israeli industry has given the world critically-acclaimed drama including Fauda and Shtisel and the production sector had long desired a shot in the arm, similar to incentives in places like the UK that has transformed local production.
Tzvika Gottlieb, CEO of the Israeli Producers Association, welcomed the legislation, which arrived “in the 90th minute before...

Iconoclastic auteur Peter Greenaway’s first film since 2015 is scheduled to be unveiled later this year, and when it hits screens, the opening credits will feature a company that may not yet be familiar to festival-goers. But if all goes according to their plan, it will be very soon.
Apx Capital Group’s film fund was launched in October of 2021, with headquarters in New York. Though the company was minted less than a year ago, Apx has already been plenty busy setting up deals and partnerships, with the release of Greenaway’s “Walking to Paris” set to be the first of many. Earlier this year, they notched a deal with Mathew Knowles (father of Beyonce) and his Music World Entertainment Group to invest 275 million toward Italian film and TV co-productions. And just last month, the company announced a pact with Paula Linhares’ Cenya Productions to develop films for Latin America; centered in Brazil,...
