Woefully frustrating for the first half, but the resolution makes up for most of it.
lnvicta7 May 2015
Warning: Spoilers
See You in Valhalla is a very frustrating movie. I can't say it's a bad movie, I can't say it's a good movie, but I can say with confidence that it is an exhausting watch. The plot of the movie makes things inherently dark: a brother kills himself so his two brothers, sister, and their significant others return to their dad's home to mourn his death and patch up old wounds. So kind of like The Big Chill except it's a family and they all hate each other.

Don't be fooled by the labelling - this is NOT a comedy. Sure there are a few chuckle-worthy moments here and there but the tone is so bleak and depressing for most of the runtime and it prevents any joke from gaining momentum. There's no lightheartedness in this movie. This is a character driven drama and for half of the movie you hate every character. Seriously. I had no idea who I was supposed to root for; it was just a bunch of people either yelling at each other or reciting painfully awkward dialogue. Seriously, the writing is horrendous in this film. I'm sure the filmmakers wanted the tension to be impactful but it just comes across as forced, cringeworthy, and borderline whiny.

Things change when more is revealed about certain characters, namely the sister Jo (played by Sarah Hyland). I won't spoil anything but you begin to relate to her once she opens up and things go uphill from there. I think the problem is that there are way too many characters. At one point I was like "wait, who am I watching on screen right now?" People come and go. Some only appear in like a scene, some appear in a couple and never show up again, and the worst part is that even these minor characters are insufferable. The movie really sucks during the moments where everyone's antagonizing one another; it's just uncomfortable and no one wants to see that. However occasionally there are sparks of something more, like a truly touching story hidden behind this abysmal dialogue. I know something beautiful is under there... buried under all that sh*t... Again, it's frustrating.

You can't blame any of these actors for what they were given. Sarah Hyland definitely has the potential to carry a movie but aside a few moments where she does show off her dramatic acting chops, her potential isn't given enough time to be realized. One standout performance was Steve Howey as Makewi. He was the funniest part about the movie. At first I thought he would be the really cliché open-minded hippie (that ended up being another character) but he's actually a lot smarter than he initially lets on and ends up being one of the deepest and most genuine characters. The role could have easily been bombed by another actor but Howey knocks it out of the park. I believed his character. That's more than I can say for half of the family. Peter also had funny moments but he was just Jo's date. Literally the only likable people are not part of the family.

So basically See You in Valhalla is a very depressing episode of Modern Family that is dragged out for 80 minutes. The family does grow on you eventually but by then it's too little too late. I have to give the movie props for handling this subject matter and making it somewhat effective in the end, and for that alone I give it a 5.5/10, rounded up because I'm nice like that. But I can't think of a single reason to watch this movie. If it's on TV one day and you want to revel in sadness and ice cream then sure give it a watch. You won't remember it being good, or bad. Just... agh. You get the picture.

Speaking of pictures, almost every character in this movie carries a picture with them at all times. It's weird.

Absolutely NOT a bad movie !!
marceldorenbos29 April 2015
To be honest..... Not a bad movie at all !! I don't get the bad reviews, because I could actually relate to all of the characters. And yes, because I'm a musician, I've seen them all, and they do exist ! And yes, I've seen families like this and they do exist ! One guy a bit out of it ( not gonna tell you which one..), but it is believable. And, well.... It's a comedy-drama... There is not much action, but it is well paced, with the comedy just let to speak for itself. And the drama did just as much. Not the best movie of all times, but certainly not the worst ! I liked it !

And what's this thing here on IMDb ? With their 10 lines minimum ??? Morons !!

Beautiful film about family
shorty6_1_9025 April 2015
First of all quite a cast although there were several members of the cast who I thought would have more imperative roles. A fan of Modern Family I find that Sarah Hyland's performance was very good and believable. I thought this film was a beautiful of a family working through their problems in a time of tragedy with the father trying to get the family back together with all the members pushing themselves away. The issues I have with this film are that there were several aspects that weren't explained. I also felt that there was a certain aspect of Johana's life that didn't get enough closure. However overall it was a beautiful film where the lost members of this family realize what is truly important.

Strange movie, a bit of a mess.
julielaine11 December 2015
I started watching this and eleven minutes in, couldn't take much more of it. Then I decided I should give it another chance, since I really hadn't. It started to get a little better, then just got weird. The ending was so bizarre, no spoiler here...I just felt awkward for the actors having to pull off the scene. It was almost as they knew "this is crap", but did their best. Sarah Hyland was pretty good in it, the acting was fine but the writing was all over the place. It was almost like they were making it up as they went along. It was hard to relate to, and I have a pretty strange family myself. Not to be unkind, but spend your time doing something else.

A family comedy for an unusual angle
JeromeArlettaz25 April 2015
I love the characters, rather caricatured to stay in comedy, but with enough subtlety to take human shape. It reminded me how close people can be violent with each other when not fulfilling each other's expectations. I guess it reminded me of something somehow. One scene is particularly intense and realistic. I'm not a family guy, so the message of this category of movies usually leaves me cold. It's probably the only family movie that touched me somehow. I've never seen a movie from Jarret Tarnol, so I'll try to watch some others. I'm surprised the rating is so, low, as I'm usually the one underrating. It may be due to the weak scenario.

Warning: Spoilers
Perfect word to describe this pointless movie.

So we have a family that is never really explained why they are in so much conflict. The main girl we follow was knocked up in high school OK...that happens to a fair amount of people. One of them was in the closet....OK? Again frequent occurrence. Another brother that knocked up his high school girl friend. What happened to the mother? She died. But why? And what is with the father? Also never explained.

Seems like more of an exercise in drama class than a movie. "Ok class create a situation with lots of conflict." But we NEVER get any back story or explanation as to why these characters are the way they are. And worst of all they DRAG and DRAG out the movie. Within 5 minutes you ALREADY can tell how it's going to go.

It's so unoriginal. Probably the most unoriginal movie I have ever seen. Even when they re-do/reboot etc. movies like King Kong and Spider-Man for the billionth time AT LEAST they put a new twist or interpretation on it. But this movie is cliché after cliché. Let's count them all! 1. douche bag guy from hs wants to get back with the girl he knocked up saying 'we could have made it work' 2. all gay men are sex crazed and have no morals 3. all the crazy people are really right in the end 4. never question the relationship you are in 5. yell at a sick parent they will IMMEDIATELY have a heart attack and your whole family will somehow magically bond. etc...

Even the characters themselves were stereotypes. None of these people exist, at least not to the extreme that they are in this movie. This movie looks like first draft stuff. Do these writers even do a re- read of their stuff? Even once!? I mean none of these characters seem to exist for more than a couple years. So the brother that killed himself that caused this family reunion...WHY was he a 'viking'? oh right there is no back story in this movie...first draft writing only. Also if he was so crazy and on drugs, wasn't his death not if but when? So why have a family reunion if they all hate each other so much and this brother was insane....oh never mind you can't makes sense of a movie where the conflict is all fake.

Avoid this movie, it's just pointless. It starts no where and it goes no where.

Funny, entertaining and eccentric - a nice little effort for those involved
See You In Valhalla is an odd little indie film, and its eccentricity makes it a perfectly enjoyable watch for indie lovers.

Indie darlings tends to be rife with quirky characters and a bizarre-o enough story. While See You In Valhalla is missing the spark to make it a true darling, it is a nice little accomplishment for Brent and Jarret Tarnol.

Johana Burwood, played by Sarah Hyland (a producer of the film), must return home after not seeing her estranged family for four years when her brother dies in a crazy and strange manner. When home, she confronts her past and siblings and work past the discomfort to finally come to terms with what she left behind.

See You in Valhalla sounds cliché and contrived, but it is in the details of the characters that it reveals itself as quite original. The plot follows a typical arch in development but the plot moments that progress it are unique. See You in Valhalla is a performance driven film, and the actors are the shining points. Steve Howey, maybe I'm just a sucker for the television show Shameless, but Howey's role as the gay hippie lover Makewi is my favorite.

See You in Valhalla is probably not a film for everyone as the combative dysfunction of the family will be potentially off-putting for some more conservative viewers. As far as indie comedies go, though it may be imperfect, you can do far worse.

This movie is about a dis functional and estranged family coming together after a death in the family from unusual circumstances.
angel_redwin24 January 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I was prepared in the first 15 minutes to just find the Wikipedia page read all the spoilers and just get done with the whole experience. So I am going to help all those who come after me who want the same. The movie felt like a bunch of forced chemistry and honestly awkward arguments that hardly mean anything.

Spoilers-----------------------------------> OK so, Max (aka Magnus) died high on meth attacking his meth dealer after his girlfriend overdosed and died, this was not the first time both people had substance issues. Max and his girlfriend tried a NeoViking colony and got clean prior to the movie. The father also had substance issues throughout his children's childhood and fell completely off the wagon when his wife died before his eldest son finished high school and was basically an absentee parent to all four of his children.

Johana the main character was not very liked for most of the movie. Her issues stem from her high school romance, she got pregnant at 16 and then after they agreed to have the baby he cheated on her with a friend. She skipped town had the baby and gave it up for adoption. She came back to town for her brothers funeral and found out her friend tori had given birth to Johnny(the ex-)s baby as well. Johnny as well as everyone else believes Jo left to have an abortion, this comes out when the guy she was vaguely seeing attempts to comfort her about the meet up with her ex.

The eldest brother Don was the big man on campus until he got his high school girlfriend pregnant and abandoned all his dreams to do right by her. He has issues with being super conservative and raising his teen daughter the same way to be different from his childhood with an addict of a father. He takes his right wing sensibilities too far in a very liberal home. It turns out that he and his wife are getting a divorce because she has been cheating on him for the majority of their marriage and he only stayed for his overachiever daughter who will do anything to make him proud. He is torn between treating his daughter like his little girl and treating her like an adult which most of them do because she acts very driven and mature.

Barry is the person most disparaged in the movie. He is a gay psychologist who got his doctorate but also has issues. He is dating mikiwei who has substance abuse problems and might have been his first unofficial patient, that's grounds for a lawsuit if he was a paying customer. Barry said it was free therapy in exchange for being a personal trainer, so we have to assume nothing illegal but slightly morally wrong may have happened. He seems to be the most put together of the family but they throw in a tidbit where he used to be fat and ate his problems away.

Pete is a side character mostly but I found him to be the most liked character of the line up, he wasn't very realistic but I found myself being really fond of him. He really likes Jo and is there to comfort her, he is a little unrealistic in that he gets through it all seemingly unscathed. He takes in stride all the drama and even defends this family despite the fact that Jo wouldn't even call him her boyfriend until she was faced with the ex boyfriend. He helped steal a body from the morgue on a whim.

The entire movie was filled with so much drama and gave no real resolution to any of the conflicts presented besides they all have to feel closer because they committed a crime together and it's implied the dad died soon after they burned Max's corpse. Granted Pete and Jo seem like an actual couple if only slightly less forced looking. I would not watch it again. In the end I'm not sure this needed the Viking undertones at all, and besides the dad, mikiwei, and max no one really knew what it meant. Sure Jo and Pete read Max's book but neither really bring up any ideas that went into it.

well done
empathico8 January 2016
a good film, very well depicting the family dynamics, when things suddenly aren't as simple as you thought any more, and you can't tamp it all down using the rules of courtesy. I liked the viking reference, as I also, like a previous reviewer, have Scandinavian roots. I believe that was done well. I found it frustrating, though, to try afterwards to find the book which we were shown repeatedly, 'remember the viking', supposedly by an author named Stevenson Abernathy, and not be able to find such a thing. If the book is fictitious, I would say that is very poor, since there are countless good reference books the movie creator could have chosen to place there.

I believe a very difficult role to 'get right' was that of the nurse/life coach for Daddy. It would have been easy to fall into a trap of coming across as either a bit of a bimbo or a too-serious zealot, but the actress avoided both of those pitfalls and came across as a woman who has seen hard times, but preserved an inherent sense of dignity

A character driven story, without characters
frenchjuice1 January 2016
To be honest, I liked clichéd movies, I like the stories where even if you know how the story is going to play out you still care for the characters and their interaction. Unfortunately See You In Vallhalla did not have that. Let's start off with the characters, the movie revolves around Johanna and her dysfunctional family, who each has a problem that they don't necessarily want to show to the public. Her brothers and herself were good characters, definitely clichéd but they went through lot of emotional spectrum. However the movie does a poor job in making us care for the characters, they have large conflicts and arguments which does nothing but give us expositions and making us hate the characters. In the arguments we are thrown into a dizzy and chaotic sequences where there is nothing for the audience to look beyond the words spoken by the members of the family. Right off the bat we are expected to root for Johanna, and the script does that by making everybody else a bigger douche than she is. With that the script creates not the most relatable character we can expect to find in a drama such as this. While the main characters were hard to care for, they were in the process of becoming human and real, however the supporting casts of acquaintances are all just a one dimensional caricatures. When I read the review for the movie there were some praises for Makewi, and his comedic timing, but his character is just a stereotypical combination of a crazy foreigner and gay, and outside of that there's nothing behind it. If he is truly the most interesting character in the movie then the movie truly speaks out for itself. Other supporting characters too were all flat, one dimensional characters and only played one emotion throughout the movie. The biggest crime this film has, however is beat. Every time someone talked it showed them talking with a close up, another person talking would bring us to another close up. If played well it might've fit in well with the frantic family argument scenes, but because of constant cutting the every dagger of words that each family member throws is hidden as the reaction shot is missing. We only see the hurtful words, we do not see the impact it creates. More frustrating fact is that even when there isn't much argument every dialogue is interlaced with several cuts, if the director just simply placed the camera and let the actors just talk in front of it without any cutting then we could see the realism, instead of the director telling us "LOOK! SOMETHING IMPORTANT" we could track it with our eyes and make the decision for ourselves. With it's technique I couldn't believe the acting, I am sure that they made some fine acting choices but as an audience member we can't see it. The emotional aspects also gets lost because of the constant cutting but as well as its choice of music placement. If they strive for realism they should've had some quiet scenes, where the characters reflect upon their actions. When the character have a moment of sorrow there is always a music playing in the background. If you like movies like this, where they call for tear jerking moments or sappy story lines I understand but the film lacks the technical perspective to show the emotional realism. If you like stories like this, I implore you to find more where the technical aspect fits with the story line, where the director let the actors play and make the audience truly care for what's going on the scene.

If you liked this movie and you want more try Silver Linings Playbook where the dysfunctional family with crazy supporting casts all get cast in a humane light, or The Spectacular Now where the director do very minimal to make the characters be more real.

If you hated this movie and saw it because I guess you went to a theatre to see it and you wanted to leave in the middle of the movie but you were like I payed so I should see it. You were kind of stupid, but you should try those two movies or just watch some action films.

Rating: If you are bored, watch it. It's better than nothing.

Don't know why, but I like it.
doktorroev25 April 2015
As soon as I finished the movie, I went in here to see what people was saying about it. The reason for this, was that I really liked this movie and I don't know why. As I read on metacritic, I would agree it has all been seen and done before, but for some reason, this just felt right and believable. Especially one scene which seems to re-live childhood brotherly shenanigans (totally saw my brother and me back then - and some time we still do it ;) )

The viking angle was something I found enjoyable, perhaps because I'm a dane - I don't know. But what he said, could have been said by friend of mine who practice Asa-faith (The believe of the vikings).

To sum it up; Good movie. Been done before but somehow, this one is different.

Clichéd sibling relationships and rivalries
phulla27 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Every movie always wants to portray typical clichéd sibling relationships.

Right from the beginning Pete never came across as Johana's boyfriend and from then on it was difficult to understand their relationship even though Pete made it obvious he wasn't Johana's boyfriend and Johana pointed it out too. Though Pete seems to behave like boyfriend. This character seems to only exist to pair Johana as every other character has a partner.

Considering their brother has died and in weird circumstances, there doesn't appear to be any feeling of loss or mourning at their sudden news.

Then there's the hippy spiritual nurse looking after the father, constantly annoying, full of stupid quips.

Movie about self centered grief as opposed to family grief at the loss of their brother and a son.

Give it your time, you may get something from this movie.

One of the most uneventful movies EVER!!
my-msn-woop-woop29 April 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I was quite looking forward to this movie when i saw who the main actor was but in all seriousness WTF was this? It felt like there wasn't even a plot, it was filled with undeveloped characters that made you neither hate nor love them just to bore you to death with pointless conversations and sorry excuses for acting.

The movie is suppose to start with the bizarre death of her brother but it really just starts with him mumbling about some sort of viking thing and then ultimately committing suicide i found it neither 'Bizarre' nor entertaining.

My favorite character was Makewi(Steve Howey) he is the gay boyfriend of Johanna's brother , his portrayal of character was both comedic and believable which as far as I'm concerned is a stark contrast from the rest of the cast. My favorite quote of his being "I'll bend you over and show you how I lost my Virginity"

I wouldn't recommend this movie for anyone to watch, it's misguided and underwhelming. You're welcome to watch it but don't blame me if you're not in to it.

about family
Kirpianuscus19 April 2017
eccentric could be the first word about this film. but it is not more eccentric than life. because this is its purpose - to examine a dysfunctional family and the way to build again the links between its members. and the work is far to have a disappointed result. but a special form of seduction, interesting characters, poetic end, realistic fights , inspired definitions of success and love and solitude, many challenges and the flavor of indie film who remains, in strange manner, comfortable refuge. short, portrait of a family. and a touching end.

Slightly cheesy, slightly quirky, family-fest
stevelivesey-3718322 June 2023
A film about twenty something siblings reunited after the death of their brother.

Generally it's a decent script and a decent story but some characters are are more relevant than others due to the inconsistencies of the screenplay. For example, the father is badly written as is the nurse that is living with him and badly cast, the sons are both well done as is Sarah Hyland, but her boyfriend is strangely undercooked.

We have seen this sort of thing before in things like 'Dan in Real Life'and Four Christmas.

All this being said, it is fairly watchable, light and fluffy and doesn't outstay its welcome.

A really nice film about family, love, life...
vegautube1 May 2015
I surprisingly loved this movie, there was something so real about it, not so much in the story but the places, the people... I was not expecting to like it so much and the performances are really good. Sarah Hyland was particularly impressive, and for the first time I saw her as a woman, and not a child from Modern Family, but in my opinion is Steve Howey character that makes this movie Awesome, he is hilarious...It's a really funny movie at times but it is also sad and full of melancholia, but what I appreciate the most is that it has a real life scenario, that not many movies have nowadays and it left me with the same feeling that i get when i finish reading a really good book, almost like an emptiness, because it's over and you loved it. Overall I think this movie is special.

Very Simple and enjoyable
wendyandb12 January 2016
** disclaimer, the plot of the movie explained.

It is a good movie. Very simple, not complex. Which is what makes it a good movie. Basic Family strife, with a generalized American family dynamic. Simple resolve. It shows how silly arguments can destroy families and how easy it is to let it all go, With the help of outsiders looking in.

As some other reviewers complained about the lack complex characters or further explanations, I don't feel they were necessary in this movie. Enough information was given for you to follow the what the movie is about. A broken family that is being healed. Simple.

OK, someone's gotta set things straight. This is high quality movie.
lurid198415 February 2016
OK, so i'm not a movie reviewer, but someone's gotta set the record straight here. This is a solid movie, bordering on very good.

I watched two times and enjoyed it both times. A lot of reviewers and raters apparently came in with a very narrow, shallow and pre- conditioned view of what this movie is supposed to be. No. Valhalla doesn't fit easily into any particular genre bucket. It's not a pure comedy, it's not "Darker Modern Family", it's not drama, etc.

It is, however, a great piece of writing with fantastic, tight, highly committed crew of actors.

And that's, what i think, makes this such a pleasurable experience. It is pure joy to watch every single actor here. There is tremendous depth and substance to every character. They play sincerely, with no holding back or emotional hedging. They embrace the characters and the story and go all out.

I know I said earlier that it wasn't comedy, but I did find it absolutely hilarious at times. Sometimes it was funny but the kind of funny when everything is so wrong that any additional wrong just becomes funny because of being so comedically and narratively predictable.

Here is my advice, let go of any preconceived notions of story and especially actors and just enjoy it. This movie is a labour of love with a lot of effort put in by everyone - give it a chance.

remake
mregor53230 March 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is a remake of Rocket Gibraltar. Not a literal, scene by scene remake, but a remake nonetheless. The central concept of both movies is the Viking funeral. In this movie we have the mystic Hawaiian. In Rocket Gibraltar there are the children. In this movie there is alienation from the father, though for reasons that are really unclear. I mean really, in the explanatory speech of Don, the father did not go to see his son play baseball? In Rocket Gibraltar it is the natural distance that grows between parents and children, who grow up to be parents themselves and have to live lives of their own. This is not a bad movie. Rocket Gibraltar is better.
