Be Careful with Your Wishes
claudio_carvalho3 July 2014
A raggedly dressed boy wearing a torn pair of pair of sneakers sits on a bench in a park feeling uncomfortable with his tennis shoes. He wanders in the park and when he returns, there is a boy with a brand new pair of sneakers sat on the bench. The ragged boy goes to another place with envy and wishes that he were the other boy. His wish is somehow granted and he switches body with the other boy and learns his health condition.

"My Shoes" is a dramatic short with a heartbreaking conclusion that shows how careful a person should be with wishes. In the end, the sneakers of those that can walk wear out the soles. My vote is eight.

The final twist is not enough

Warning: Spoilers
"My Shoes" is an Australian Enhglish-language short film from 2012, so this one has its 5th anniversary this year and it is quite a success on Youtube with the millions and millions of people who have seen it. It runs for slightly under 4 minutes only and this is an early career effort by Nima Raoofi. It's the story of a poor boy who wishes to be like another, apparently wealthier and happier boy, but appearances can be deceiving and the moment he makes that wish we somewhat know already he will be in for a rude awakening. The body switch depiction was good, even if the actual event did not convince me story-wise. It came out of nowhere and was a bit too absurd for my liking. Another thing that bothered me was the fact that after years, maybe his whole life, in a wheelchair, the other boy can suddenly run around as if nothing happened. And finally the soundtrack was too much in your face, too loud while characters were speaking and it was a bit difficult to understand them. Eventually, this may seem like a quality watch, but this really only applies to the untrained eye. This was not a good movie and the final plot twist cannot make me forget about the empty mediocrity from the first 2.5 minutes. It's also not half as deep or meaningful as it seems. Skip it.

appearences

To say it is a great film is real easy. for the performances and details and the realistic desire of poor boy. and, sure, for the end. because it is an universal story, answer for every life. the needs, the pray, the answer. and the reality behind the appearences. in same measure, it is a lovely demonstration about the virtues of short film who has the force to send a convincing, precise message in brilliant way. and this is one of motifs to see "My Shoes". not only for artistic virtues. but for wise manner to remind to viewer a basic, so simple truth.
