The ratings for this edition fell to 6 million and 56th place in the charts.
Although it faced strong competition from ITV, with That Old Malarkey (1989) being watched by 10.4 million, it appears that the public may have just tired of the series, as the BBC1 programmes either side of Blankety Blank were tremendously popular with viewers.
Episode #1.483 (1989) was watched by 11.1 million on the night (14.5 million with the Sunday repeat) and Episode #4.3 (1989) had 10.5 million tuning in. The fact that both shows were in the Top 15 (Top 5 in the case of EastEnders) and the programme broadcast between them didn't even make the Top 50 was a bad sign for the future of Blankety Blank.
