Not the worse film ever, but it had some problems
mauvemoonlight2 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I don't think I really have any major spoilers in this review, but to be on the safe side I have given a warning--as perhaps someone who has not seen the film might not want to know even this much in advance.

This film is definitely a modern day tale--with a single, unmarried mother with a young son, struggling to try to meet the bills.

The story actually starts out pretty good.

Gwen works for an ins. agency, she has a mother she considers too controlling, a best female friend at the office, and she's trying to better herself by taking an on-line real estate course. In the meantime, she can't meet her mortgage. However, she refuses to consider selling the house and moving into something she could actually afford. How she was ever able to afford such an affluent house in the first place remains a mystery.

Then one day, out of the blue, she has a flat tire and this nice looking man happens along and changes the tire for her. Soon they're involved in a romance. Only he isn't who he seems, neither is another character in the storyline.

The problem is the writer gets a little too clever with the tale and it ends up being rather unbelievable. We also have no way out for the heroine beyond the villain spilling their guts--which I've always considered to be weak writing.

We also conveniently manage to come up with a new, albeit sudden romance for the heroine by the end of the film.

Natalia Cigulari is standout in Spider-web story of intrigue that eventually unravels like a cheap suit
herbqedi3 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
As Sidney, Gwen's best friend, Natalia Cigulari is absolutely devastating and totally credible until the film's ridiculous denouement. Eleese Lester, a native Texan, in this Houston-based story, is excellent as the mother our heroine thinks is too controlling but is actually the only thing between her and "Texas Justice."

On the other hand, our heroine Gwen, portrayed by dewy-eyed Sarah Lancaster, seems to be reading her lines from a teleprompter. And that's just one of this film's many problems. The direction is so heavy-handed and the musical cues remove a lot of the tension from a plot that actually is well above-average in its innate craftiness and set-up of the situation. That's why I even bothered to write this one up. The film's "book" deserves remaking and Ms. Cigulari and Ms. Lester were perfect in their roles. Most of the rest of the cast was at least serviceable with the actress playing the police detective being better than that. The actor playing the other villain, the married Preacher, who pretends to be an unmarried pharmaceutical sales executive who sweeps Gwen off her feet as part of the nefarious plan, is quite good and well cast as well.

But the heavy handed direction uses sinister music and then shows us too soon that Sidney is not who she seems to be. This could have been almost a Hitchcockian thriller if we didn't find this out until the climax and if we did not have a director who would be third choice for a third-rate soap opera episode. And as others have said, in the last 15 minutes the villains take all their clever plotting and perfect frame and throw it straight out the window so our heroine can escape. So what could've been a thriller to rival Dial M for Murder ends in characters behaving in a way totally foreign to everything they had done until now and turning our clueless and drugged heroine into a resourceful action hero. Too bad.

Pastor Needs a Tighter Plot
wes-connors8 November 2013
Beautifully-figured insurance agent Sarah Lancaster (as Gwendolyn "Gwen" Griffith) suffers from nightmares due to abusive old relationship. A single mom, she lives in Houston, Texas with outspoken six-year-old son Logan Lindholm (as Alec). Felled by a flat tire, Ms. Lancaster receives help from preachy passerby Drew Waters (as Ed Baker). The two begin a whirlwind romance, but Mr. Waters withholds some information...

Also involved is sneaky co-worker Natalia Cigliuti (as Sidney) and agile private investigator Bryan Mitchell (as David Wyatt)...

Since there is a high level of implausibility, they should have gone all he way and had mother Eleese Lester (as Ellen) uncover a secret, and pay with her life. She could have been given a health ailment, like a weak heart. "The Preacher's Mistress" is a perfectly cast, nicely directed (by Michelle Mower) and engaging TV movie. Alas, this one seems to have been rushed through post-production without ironing out some problems.

***** The Preacher's Mistress (11/2.13) Michelle Mower ~ Sarah Lancaster, Drew Waters, Natalia Cigliuti, Bryan Mitchell

"It's so nice to meet somebody normal."
utgard1410 November 2014
Struggling single mom who has nightmares of a past abusive relationship starts dating a guy who's too good to be true. I normally don't watch these types of made-for-TV movies. I prefer the lighter ones, like romantic comedies and Christmas movies. But I like Sarah Lancaster so I decided to give this a shot. As I feared, it's not very good. All of the twists are telegraphed far in advance. I mean, the promos for this and every synopsis you find online gives out major plot elements anyway but assuming you went into this completely oblivious to all of that, I still think you'll figure everything in this movie out at least 20 minutes before the main character does. Also they hammered home how hard up she is financially to the point that it became kind of annoying. In the first half-hour they couldn't go a full scene without this chick reminding someone that she's broke as a joke. And yet she lives in a nice house, drives a nice car, wears nice clothes, etc. It was unbelievable. Oh and the Value Mart conversation between her and her friend was hilarious to me. I think this was supposed to make us relate to Sarah's character and think "Wow, this woman has to shop at discount stores! She's like people!" It's pretty funny. The acting by all involved ranges from terrible to adequate. It's not like the material is challenging but I guess people strike out in softball, too. On a superficial note, Sarah is stunningly beautiful and Natalia Cigliuti is pretty easy on the eyes, too. So there's that.

terrible plot terrible acting gawwwwd this was awful
watchtime1118 January 2014
Lifetime has some of the worst movies but this is at the top , the acting was the worst, and some of these actors CAN act but not here. I was laughing all the way through, its just plain horrible, I'm going to start writing a script now and sell to lifetime, obviously they pay for anything. the scene on the top of parking garage when they kidnap girl from "Chuck" OMG could they be any worst actors in the world , I don't think so....... If this network is going to spend the money on movies for this channel its just as easy to film good movies as it is bad. and this one is bbbaaaaaad! Looking forward to Flowers in the attic at least I know there is talent in this show, why cant you keep all your movies/shows at this caliber

Just when you think you've seen the dumbest LMN woman.....
hoops-5343616 April 2022
......a new contender enters the race. Wow. It's tough enough to believe how fast they jump into bed with any guy, but this one...this Gwen.. takes the cake. Not only does she jump into bed with a guy on like the second date, but she knows nothing about him (except what he has told her.) The best scene is when her mom takes her to this church, where the guy who claimed he is in pharmaceutical sales, is the minister there. And, to top that off- HE'S MARRIED! She confronts him soon after and this creep of a man tells her he loves her and wants her. And that is fine for her. Nevermind that he's married and lied about everything about him- she's in LOVE!!!

The story itself is pretty good but it is far overshadowed by the stupidity of the woman. +2 stars for the storyline, -8 stars for the dumb lead character.

very nice plot, one fine actor, trite ending
alannasser12 November 2013
The first ten minutes of this movie lead you to expect another very poor Lifetime movie - sluggish pace, wooden acting and embarrassing dialog. But things soon take a felicitous turn and the film ends up worth watching, notably better than standard Lifetime fare. Remember now, it's a Lifetime movie and certain heights will not be attained. That said, the plot turns out to be more layered than you might expect - usually it's a heroine and a bad guy, two characters interacting in a manner supposed to generate tension and thrills. Here we have 5 or 6 characters interwoven in a way that keeps your interest. The female lead's performance improves after the first 10 minutes and Natalia Cigliuti, playing a central character, proves herself to be a first rate actor (not actress - why call a female actor an "actress"?), far superior to the rest of the cast here. I was quite surprised to find myself fully engaged with the story. The other reviewers are right: the ending is a total bust - trite, unimaginative, implausible - as if the writer couldn't come up with a conclusion as interesting as the plot. As usual, the heroine cannot be left without a romantic prospect in Lifetime, so the story had to written with a character who could perform that function in the final seconds of the movie.

I Hate it When...
Stoshie10 April 2021
...LMN shortens their older movies to fit in a 90 minute time slot, as they did with this movie on 4/10/21. With commercials, that means they had to make cuts to the film to fit it into the allotted time frame. This happens fairly often; movies that are about 1.5 hours long, meant to run in a 2-hour time slot, with commercials, are edited to fit into only 90 minutes.

As for the movie itself, it's hard to give it a fair judgement since the cuts made the movie choppy, with some obviously missing elements.

But did I really miss much? I doubt it. This was a typical Lifetime movie plot, with a typically absurd ending. I just wish I could have seen the whole thing so I could criticize it even more harshly!

Quite well done until the very end
tedphx3 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is a delightful addition to my favorite Lifetime category which I lovingly call "Get The Bitch." It's when the lead actress finally does something so stupid that you're compelled to start rooting for the villain. This time it's when our lonely lovely is distraught enough to confront her bad-beau at his church - an idea so terrible that she then deserves everything that happens afterward - as well as before.

To be clear, this movie was quite enjoyable overall as a good many of the movies in the "genre" are. A woman with a young boy becomes a damsel in slight distress and is befriended by a a man who, quite naturally, becomes her boyfriend. Of course, nothing is what it seems to her, even though we know exactly what's happening.

If the title itself doesn't offer enough of a clue, "The Preacher's Mistress" is soon over her head with enough problems to last a lifetime - possibly quite literally.

But while her naiveté and stupidity are actually very believable, the ending isn't, and as a viewer, that's distressing because the final scene of endangerment could have easily been done, say, as an attempt to stage suicide, with our poor mistress being saved in a nick of time by the private investigator her mother had hired to follow the no-good boyfriend.

Instead, we got a preposterous denouement in which the investigator had to be idiotic enough, not to mention close enough, to allow it all to happen before our drugged heroine saves both herself and P.I. guy. Then, throw in an instant romance and roll credits.

Victimhood
lavatch24 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
If there were ever a profile of the quintessential victim, it would have to be Gwendolyn Griffith. The single mom of the little boy Alec still has nightmares about her ex-boyfriend, a married man named Jake who physically attacked her for getting pregnant. She defended herself with a baseball bat, and she was the one who was arrested. Jake later died was while driving drunk. Gwendolyn even lost her father when she was seven. He also was driving drunk and hit a pole.

Now, Gwendolyn faces a new dilemma when she begins a relationship with a man who claims to work in pharma. Actually, he is the pastor of the Faith Neighborhood Church in a suburb of Houston. Reverend Ed Baker is working in cahoots with a confederate, setting up Gwendolyn to take the fall for the murder of Ed's wife Kelly, an heiress who is worth millions.

After Kelly is murdered and Gwendolyn is arrested, the media anoints her with the appellation "the preacher's mistress." In fact, she has been duped by her co-worker Sidney, who turns out be Ed's confederate. Sidney spent four years locating and getting cozy with Gwendolyn because Sidney is the vindictive sister of Jake, whose death she blames on her friend.

The filmmakers were successful with some snappy dialogue and a well-developed set of characters. It is especially Gwendolyn's mother, Ellen, who was memorable as the voice of reason, who suspected Ed from the outset. While the climactic scene turned into a nearly farcical romp in the parking garage with the characters running in circles around an SUV, there was finally a sense of redemption for the Queen of All Victims, Miss Gwendolyn Griffith. In the kind private eye, David Wyatt, there was even the sense that Gwendolyn had finally met Mr. Right.

So..........

Sloppy story line and in forensics sense totally implausible. I don't know this Drew Waters fella, and haven't seen him in anything else but sorry, he's a totally crap actor. As for Gwen aka Sarah Lancaster; she should kiss her mom's feet and be at her beck and call for the rest of her life, because a mother's always right!
