- George is the first black school teacher in a school for colored girls in Montgomery, Alabama. Welcome to the 1930s. He is constantly threatened by the locals and his school is attacked by arsonists because they refused to heed to threats. Riley Spencer is a white police officer who sympathizes with George. When George falls in love with Mary, a white teacher at the same school, this sparks the locals, led by Riley's father, to don their KKK uniforms and attack George.
