The following essay was produced as part of the 2017 Locarno Critics Academy, a workshop for aspiring film critics that took place during the 70th edition of the Locarno Film Festival.
Swiss cinema isn’t exactly stuck in a rut. Its artistically-challenging documentaries are thriving: Markus Imhoofs meditation on bees in the climate-change era “More Than Honey” from 2012 was released in 29 countries around the globe, and last year, the animated “My Life as Zucchini” was nominated for an Oscar. Historically, however, Switzerland has given rise to an outstanding list of worldly auteurs such as Claude Goretta, Alain Tanner and Jean-Luc Godard. Why haven’t we heard much about young Swiss talent making the leap out of the small alpine state?
There is one major exception here: Ursula Meier is a Geneva-based cinematographer and filmmaker who has found a string of international successes. With “Sister” in 2012, she received the Silver Bear at the Berlinale.

There are marketing challenges, and then there is what Showtime faced in getting the word out about the “Twin Peaks” revival.
Reboots like “Twin Peaks” promote themselves to some degree, as fans eagerly await any tidbit of information about what has transpired in the years since their favorite show went off the air. But networks will generally have the ability to start teasing the reunion via photos, clips and other teases. With “Twin Peaks,” creator David Lynch kept a firm lid on anything appearing anywhere before the show’s actual premiere on Showtime.

But that wasn’t originally going to be the case. Don Buckley, Showtime’s chief marketing officer, told us Tuesday at the Variety TV Summit that he and his team had actually created a substantial marketing campaign featuring robust print and video materials from the show.

Bon Appétit is coming.
Katy Perry fans got a taste of the singer’s rumored new song, “Bon Appétit”, in a uniquely delicious way on Monday when she sent out a newsletter with the subject line “World’s Best Cherry Pie” and the recipe in the body of the email.
While some might think the pop star simply wanted to share her favorite indulgence with her fans, the KatyCats knew to dig a little deeper. Written within the recipe, which calls for sweet cherries, butter, sugar and cornstarch, are a few unorthodox instructions that fans have determined may be lyrics to the new song.

Almost since its 2001 release, “Mulholland Drive” has been hailed as not only a great film but also as the greatest of the 21st century so far. The latest study of David Lynch’s surreal masterwork comes from Leigh Singer, whose video essay “Mulholland Dr., the Essential Lynch” was recently published by Fandor.

“What if it’s more than that?” the video asks of the film’s status as the 21st century’s standard-bearer. “What if it’s the essence and summation of David Lynch’s entire body of work?” Singer spends the next five or so minutes arguing just that, taking a brief tour through Lynch’s filmography — from “Eraserhead” and “Blue Velvet” to “Wild at Heart” and “Lost Highway” — to show that all those other films, while great in their own right, were mere prelude to “Mulholland Drive.

Showtime and Neon have signed on to distribute “Risk,” Laura Poitras’ long-gestating doc about WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.
“Risk” will run on Showtime later this summer, while Showtime Documentary Films and Neon will also give it a theatrical release.
The news was revealed on Sunday night, as Showtime ran a surprise trailer (watch below) for “Risk” following the season finale of “Homeland.” The decision to announce it there wasn’t coincidental; “Homeland” featured a storyline this season about a shady organization that spread lies and “fake news” on the Internet in order to damage the reputation of the president-elect.
Poitras has been filming “Risk” for over six years as a follow-up to her Academy Award-winning doc “Citizenfour,” which focused on the story of Edward Snowden. (HBO aired that doc.) According to Showtime, “Risk” continued to film through the 2016 presidential election, during which WikiLeaks wound up playing a major role.

StudioCanal UK has released the brand new (and shiny) trailer for the restoration of David Lynch’s “Mulholland Drive.” Last August, the BBC conducted a poll of more than 177 film critics around the world to determine which were the best films of the 21st century, and Lynch’s iconic 2001 film topped the list. Now, 16 years after its premiere, the mystery/thriller has gotten a 4K restoration under the supervision of Lynch himself, and it’s ready to hit UK theaters.

There are three upcoming shows that in my eyes are leading the pack in their marketing efforts. I’m not 100% sure what the order is but I think that Twin Peaks, Game of Thrones, and Better Call Saul are killing it. Why? Out in limited release and available on VOD is the horror comedy with a fantasy twist, The Final Girls. From director Todd Strauss-Schulson (A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas), the film follows young Max (Taissa Farmiga) a year after her scream-queen mother (Malin Akerman) dies. When her cinephile friend invites her out to a celebratory screening of the film she was most famous for, Max and her group of friends are transported to the actual reality of the 80s horror slasher. Once there the group must find a way to survive the relentless, murdering Billy. That’s a lot of setup and yet the The Final Girls manages to be quite smooth and smart in the way things are laid out. While the film mostly plays for laughs instead of horror, there are some more interesting aspects working at the core of the film when it comes to Max and her...

The Final Girls is one of those films that’s so hard to classify, because it’s got a little something for everyone. First and foremost, horror fans are going to have a blast with M.A. Fortin and Joshua John Miller’s super-self-referential screenplay that captures genre geekdom and pokes fun at Every 80s horror cliche imaginable. Mainstream audience aren’t forgotten either, as a hilarious cast of talented actors put comedy first, while gory kill-sequences are kept at an acceptable minimum.
And of course, we can’t forget about the true cinema fans, as director Todd Strauss-Schulson’s killer attention to ambitious detail somehow comes together like an insanely metaphysical nightmare that transcends so many wild and crazy levels. Trust me, you’ve never seen a slasher film like The Final Girls, and that’s what makes this movie such a riotous take on horror norms gone sexily wrong.

Locarno: Film Republic has secured world rights to Paraguayan-Swiss co-production El Tiempo Nublado by Arami Ullon.
One of the first acquisitions to be confirmed from this year’s Locarno Film Festival line-up, feature doc El Tiempo Nublado first launched at Visions du Reel where it received the Section Regard Neuf award.
The deal was negotiated between Film Republic’s Xavier Henry-Rashid and producer-distributor Pascal Traeschlin at Karlovy Vary where it received its international premiere last month.
Film Republic previously picked up Fuori Concorso selection Cherry Pie by Lorenz Merz in Locarno in 2013 where they also signed Rosie by Marcel Gisler, with veteran production house Cobra Film helmed by Susann Ruedlinger.
“Locarno is already a major, but also increasingly important stepping stone in the festival calendar,” said Xavier.
“Its repertoire of art-house and mid-level buyers, as well as extremely supportive selection of, maybe sometimes less obvious development or post stage titles [this year’s Open Doors focuses on the African continent, with the Carte Blanche on Brazilian cinema] offers a good balance between a business...
