What do Cannes competition films “Kinds of Kindness,” “American Horror Story,” “The Iron Claw,” “Hit Man” and “Pitch Perfect” have in common? These are just a smattering of the projects that have utilized Louisiana’s production resources over the decades thanks to the state’s robust incentive program.
In the early 1990s, the state recognized the power of Hollywood and started luring productions to the South with all it had to offer. The program was revitalized in 2002 and continues to grow, encompassing everything from pre- to post-production.
The dollars make sense in Louisiana. The state offers a base 25% production credit, with options to add on from there. A Louisiana-set screenplay nets 10% more credit, with 5% extra tacked on for filming outside of New Orleans. The incentives transfer to post-production, too, with an extra 5% if 50% of the VFX work is completed in state or there’s a $1 million spend. The current rates...

Exclusive: Ryan Murphy is quickly expanding his footprint on ABC. The network has given a straight-to-series order to his Doctor Odyssey, with Joshua Jackson set to play the lead and executive produce. The drama, targeted for a fall launch, hails from 20th Television in association with Ryan Murphy Television.
As is the case with any Ryan Murphy series, no details about the premise are being revealed. As the title suggests, Doctor Odyssey is believed to be a medical procedural. According to sources, it is set on a cruise ship. That was the setting for this season’s disaster-themed opener of Murphy’s procedural 9-1-1 in its debut on ABC, and it also harkens back to TV classic The Love Boat.

Ryan Murphy will depart Netflix at the end of his five-year, nine-figure overall deal, and is set to make a new home at Disney.
The producer behind hits including Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, 911 and American Horror Story is expecting to reunite with Dana Walden, who worked closely with Murphy when she headed what was then 20th Century Fox TV and he had a deal there. Walden, who is also one Murphy’s closest friends and confidants, is now co-chairman of Disney Entertainment. The new, not yet completed pact — Murphy’s Netflix deal doesn’t expire until the end of the month, after all — will bring Murphy back in-house with FX’s John Landgraf, with whom he has long had a close creative relationship, as well. Sources say the move has been in the works since well before the Writers Guild of America went on strike in May.
Disney declined to comment.

Hollywood’s $300 million man has been consolidating his real estate holdings over the last couple of years. Last fall, busy showrunner Ryan Murphy (American Horror Story, American Crime Story, Glee, Nip/Tuck, Ratched, 9-1-1) sold his longtime Laguna Beach vacation home for $10.7 million to an obviously wealthy but non-famous couple. And earlier this year, he unloaded his longtime Beverly Hills main residence for $16.3 million, selling to fellow producer David Zander. (For what it’s worth, Zander has already flipped that same 90210 house, off-market, for $16.5 million to hedge fund manager Seth Wunder.)

“Ratched” star Sarah Paulson was one of the lucky actors to be nominated for a 2021 Golden Globe award Wednesday morning. But as an executive producer on the Ryan Murphy Netflix drama, she also takes a great sense of pride in the nods the “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” prequel and her co-star Cynthia Nixon received, too.
“That kind of thing is very, very, very special to me that the show was nominated,” said Paulson, who is up for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama. The show will be competing for the top honor of best drama, while Nixon is in the running for her supporting role.

The penultimate episode of American Horror Story: 1984 set the stage for a massive Camp Redwood reunion, with everyone — be they alive, dead or merely presumed dead — returning to the scene of the crime(s) for one final showdown.
Let’s begin with Brooke and Donna. When a reporter for The National Enquirer, who happened to be writing a true-crime book about Mr. Jingles, tracked the ladies down at a shady motel, Brooke made her an offer she couldn’t refuse: If she agreed to keep their whereabouts a secret, Brooke would deliver proof that Margaret was the murderous mastermind behind the massacres.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched, “Mr. Jingles,” the second episode of “American Horror Story: 1984.”
Last week, the main characters in “American Horror Story: 1984” decided Los Angeles was not the best scene in the summer of 1984, owing to the Olympics being in town and also crazed serial killer the Night Stalker (Zach Villa) on the loose, so they hightailed it up to Camp Redwood… to now be faced with not only the crazed serial killer from La but also Mr. Jingles (John Carroll Lynch), the escaped mental patient who went on a murderous rampage at the camp in 1970.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched the season premiere of “American Horror Story: 1984” entitled “Camp Redwood.”
Welcome back to “American Horror Story,” which in its ninth season travels back in time to the 1970s and 1980s to play in the slasher genre.
Only one episode into the season, it already looks to be a fun ride because “1984” is the first season since “Freak Show” to be set in the past. This year seems like a real treat for campy horror, though, harkening back to not only the original “Friday the 13th” movies but also the fun knockoffs like “Sleepaway Camp” and “Summer Camp Nightmare.”
This is also the first season without Sarah Paulson or Evan Peters. Losing not one but two heavy-hitters leaves “Horror Story” with some big shoes to fill; luckily, Leslie Grossman and Billie Lourd have come on strong in recent years to fill that Paulson void.

Jessica Lange made her triumphant return to “American Horror Story” this season with “Apocalypse,” reprising her role from the show’s very first season, Constance Langdon. She is now nominated for an Emmy in Best Drama Guest Actress, seven years after winning for the role.
Lange recently spoke with Gold Derby editor in chief Tom O’Neil and managing editor Chris Beachum about returning to Constance Langdon with “Apocalypse,” working with Ryan Murphy and her ranking of “American Horror Story” seasons. Watch the exclusive video interview above and read the complete transcript below.
SEEEmmy eye-popper: Why is ‘American Horror Story: Apocalypse’ in drama categories instead of limited series races?
Gold Derby (Tom O’Neil): Jessica, I counted up the number of episodes of “Horror Story” that you’ve been in. It’s more than 56. These are one-hour showcases. That means it’s the equivalent of having shot 30 motion pictures.

For the first time ever, FX’s anthology series “American Horror Story” will be in the drama races at the Emmys for its “Murder House”-“Coven” crossover season, titled “Apocalypse.” Of course, this also means that leading lady Sarah Paulson will find herself in a different environment, now that she’s competing in Best Drama Actress. At the moment, she’s down in 13th place in our combined Emmy odds, but could she surprise and sneak into the lineup?
With seven previous Emmy nominations and one win for playing Marcia Clark on “The People vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story” in 2016, Paulson is practically Emmy royalty. Since five of her seven bids are for “Horror Story,” we already know that voters are familiar with her work on that show, albeit for different characters. “American Horror Story: Apocalypse” brought about the highly anticipated “Murder House” and “Coven” crossover, giving leading lady Sarah Paulson three roles to play: Billie Dean Howard (“Murder House”), Cordelia Foxx (“Coven”) and new character Wilhemina Venable. But Paulson also had a fourth role on the show: director. Having made her directorial debut with the sixth episode, “Return to Murder House,” the seven-time Emmy nominee and one-time winner could now add a directing nomination to her Emmy ledger.
In “Return to Murder House,” Madison (Emma Roberts) and Behold (Billy Porter) are sent to Murder House by Cordelia to dig deeper into Michael Langdon’s (Cody Fern) past. The episode unveils a horrifying truth about the future Supreme, features Michael transforming into the Antichrist, and gives some “Murder House” characters ultimate closure.

“American Horror Story” will be competing as a drama series at this year’s Emmys, the Television Academy announced on Tuesday.
Along with USA’s “The Sinner” and Netflix’s “American Vandal,” both of which had also previously competed as limited series, the most recent season of “Horror Story” will be categorized as an ongoing series “due to continuing story threads, characters and actors reprising those same character roles from previous seasons.”
The move comes after last year’s “American Horror Story: Apocalypse” united past seasons under one shared universe, with a number of actors reprising their characters from previous installments, including both Season 1 stars, Connie Britton and Dylan McDermott. Series regular Sarah Paulson also reprised two of her characters from other seasons.

Uber-producer Ryan Murphy has made small screen stars out of A-listers and fresh faces alike.
Angela Bassett (pictured above)
Bassett starred in four seasons of “American Horror Story”, earning two Emmy nominations. She helmed two episodes as a director, the first during her final season as an actor, on “Roanoke,” before Murphy invited her back behind-the-scenes for a pivotal episode in the seventh season, “Cult.” She also signed on to star in and serve as executive producer on Murphy’s first-responder drama “9-1-1” for Fox, which is now in its second season.
Kathy Bates
Bates joined the Ryan Murphy family in 2013, with the third season of “American Horror Story,” subtitled “Coven,” and continued on through the sixth season, “Roanoke.” The Oscar winner scored three nominations and one win to date with her work on Murphy’s anthology before moving over to “Feud,” in which she played actress Joan Blondell.

This season has been a snappy, sharp return to form for FX’s “American Horror Story.” Which is exactly why the show should end.
It’s nice to go out on a high — and “Apocalypse,” the eighth installment and an imaginative comeback after the shoddily made “Cult” season, is certainly that. But at a moment at which “Horror Story” maestro Ryan Murphy has stepped away from FX, the show seems coincidentally enough to have reached a completion of its vision. “Apocalypse” doesn’t just bring together disparate beloved corners of the show’s mythology, from its first-season “Murder House” to the witches of fan favorite season “Coven”; it depicts the literal end of the world. Where can a story go from there?

“Dinah is a chameleon and she becomes whoever she needs to become for whoever her employer happens to be, whether it’s a rich Beverly Hills socialite or Papa Legba,” Porter tells Variety.
