After the euphoria of upfront presentations, where network executives touted their new shows with short trailers, those shows are getting their first real test at the L.A. Screenings, where international buyers watch the full pilots of all new shows. It has been a strong development season for drama, not so much for comedy, and that has made for solid screenings as high-end drama series is U.S. top TV export. That’s a wrap: We know what shows survived a round of cuts and what new shows will join the 2014-15 fall schedule. Now that the week of network sales presentations to advertisers are over, here are the best and worst moments of the last five days and what it means for this fall.

Jada Pinkett Smith is returning to TV to co-star in the Fox TV 1-hour drama series Gotham, which, after watching most of the trailers for new 2014/2015 series, is one of the few that I'm actually interested enough in to check out when it debuts. I'm digging the seemingly dark, gritty world that the show's creators have created, and, quite frankly, of the 4 major broadcast TV networks (ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox), Fox's primetime lineup in recent years (with series like Almost Human - which was sadly canceled - Sleepy Hollow and, one of my faves, The Following, as well as Cosmos) has had my attention above all the others. The network takes more chances with original...

(Cbr) Based upon characters published by DC Entertainment and produced by Warner Bros. Television, "Gotham" is an origin story of the great DC Comics Super-Villains and vigilantes, revealing an entirely new chapter that has never been told. Starring Ben McKenzie ("Southland," "The O.C."), Donal Logue ("Sons of Anarchy," "Terriers," "Vikings," "Copper") and Jada Pinkett Smith ("The Matrix" films, "HawthoRNe"), "Gotham" follows one cop’s rise through a dangerously corrupt city teetering on the edge of evil and chronicles the birth of one of the most popular super heroes of our time. Executive producer Bruno Heller ("The Mentalist") wrote the pilot, which was directed and executive-produced by Emmy Award nominee Danny Cannon (the “CSI” franchise, “Nikita”). John Stephens will serve as an executive producer on the series.

See fresh footage while Gotham's showrunners describe the world they've built for the show...
Trailer
"It is a good old-fashioned cop show in the most dangerous, vivid world imaginable."
There's plenty to like about the new footage glimpsed in this Gotham featurette, which has The Mentalist's Bruno Heller and director/producer Danny Cannon introducing the show to Fox's audience. We're given a closer look at Donal Logue as Det. Harvey Bullock, as well as more on non-dc character Fish Mooney, played by Jada Pinkett-Smith.
Somewhat confusing is showrunner Heller's claim that Gotham, "...is not a comic book world, this is a real world heightened. It's a mythic world, it's a dramatic world filled with adventure and colour and sex and violence and fun". We don't know what comics Heller's been reading, but that sounds a fair description of a comic book world to us...

Fox is working pretty hard to build anticipation for Gotham, a show that piqued our interest based on the premise alone. We’ve already seen a trailer and host of new images for the Batman prequel series (which just got picked up for a 16-episode season) and now, a new featurette has hit the web.
Featuring interviews with series creator Bruno Heller and pilot director Danny Cannon, as well as cast members Ben McKenzie (Jim Gordon), Donal Logue (Harvey Bullock) and Jada Pinkett Smith (Fish Mooney), we get to hear a bit more about everyone’s roles and their excitement for the series.
Along with the interviews and new plot details comes a ton of new footage, which shows off the dark nature of Gotham City and the evil and corruption that will someday reach its breaking point, giving way to costumed vigilantes and megalomaniacal super villains.

This past week has seen the release of a new trailer and over a dozen stills for Gotham, the upcoming TV series which will delve into the early years of Detective Jim Gordon and a young Bruce Wayne before he dons the cape and cowl to become Batman. It also features some very recognisable villains!
Of course, you may be wondering what exactly the point of checking out a Batman series without Batman is, but Gotham appears to be more than just the same old origin story, and the series will put the spotlight on a character who is more often than not relegated to a supporting role.
As we mentioned above, we’ll also get to see the beginnings of many of the Caped Crusader’s future rogues gallery; villains like The Penguin, The Riddler and even The Joker. Below, you’ll find ten reasons why you should be excited for Gotham.

It was only a week ago that Fox announced it had picked up Gotham to series, which means we’ll be getting 16 episodes that will air on Monday nights at 8pm staring in the fall. Since then, we’ve seen a few promo images, plot details, and a great trailer that give us a clear picture of what to expect from the Batman-less prequel.
Now, the marketing push continues, as over a dozen new images have been released. We’re treated to a shot of detective Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) talking to a young Bruce Wayne, presumably at his parents’ crime scene, and we also see a glimpse of what looks like an intense showdown between Gordon and the future Penguin, Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor). We also get a look at Penguin’s boss, Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith), and Gordon’s partner, Harvey Bullock, (Donal Logue) at a slaughterhouse.

The first trailer for The Flash will debut after this week’s season finale of Arrow on Wednesday, but a new promo for that episode has offered up a very brief look at the iconic DC superhero speeding into action.
For a TV budget, the effects appear to be very impressive, and should help put aside any doubts over whether or not The CW will be equipped to do the Scarlet Speedster justice on the small screen. Be sure to wait right until the end, especially as it appears as if Green Arrow will also be in The Flash pilot!
Of course, The Flash will be joined this Autumn not only by a third season of Arrow, but also Constantine and Gotham. The latter series has today released a lengthy new synopsis for the Batman prequel along with a great batch of character promo images and stills from the highly anticipated pilot episode.

Normally upfronts bring the first video and images from new shows. That's not exactly the case with Fox's DC Comics prequel "Gotham," which has been anticipated enough that Fox and Warner Brothers TV have been teasing pictures for several weeks and the first trailer for the drama aired last week with the premiere of "24: Live Another Day." We've already seen glimpses of Ben McKenzie, Donal Logue, David Mazouz, Jada Pinkett Smith and the rest of the stars of "Gotham," which will air on Mondays at 8 p.m. on Fox. Here, however, are the first official gallery shots and stills for "Gotham," which has been ordered for 16 episode, rather than the normal 13, up-front with the potential for more.

Gotham is the new television series from executive producer/writer Bruno Heller (Rome, The Mentalist) that goes deep into the corrupt world of DC Comics' Gotham City before the vigilante Batman wore the cowl. Before there was Batman, there was Gotham. Everyone knows the name Commissioner Gordon. He is one of the crime world’s greatest foes, a man whose reputation is synonymous with law and order. But what is known of Gordon’s story and his rise from rookie detective to Police Commissioner? What did it take to navigate the multiple layers of corruption that secretly ruled Gotham City, the spawning ground of the world’s most iconic villains? And what circumstances created them – the larger-than-life personas who would become Catwoman, The Penguin, The Riddler, Two-Face and The Joker?...

Coming off a bumpy season and facing its first fall without three hours of "X Factor" in several years, Fox announced its 2014-15 schedule on Monday (May 12) morning. Actually, Fox only announced its Fall 2014 schedule on Monday. For the first time in recent memory, Fox didn't even attempt to present a midseason slate to advertisers as part of its upfronts presentation. Certainly Fox has plenty on the bench for a busy midseason, but the network has held back on January plans, perhaps waiting on the fate of the ambitious reality series "Utopia." While "X Factor" and its three hours are now, thankfully, gone, Fox scheduled two fall episodes with "Utopia," airing new episodes on Tuesday and Friday nights. In success, Fox execs have indicated that "Utopia" could continue forever -- Just like "Forever Eden"! -- which would impact Fox's spring slate. Fox also may want to hold off on deciding...

As if there was any doubt, Fox has picked up its Gotham pilot as a full TV series, and in celebration here's the first trailer. Ben McKenzie stars as the early-career Jim Gordon in the Before-Batman crime drama, with support from Jada Pinkett Smith, Donal Logue, and David Mazouz as the young Bruce Wayne.Plenty to muse on there, with Gordon walking his mean streets for the first time and Bruce enduring a formative tragedy in Crime Alley (note the sneaky bat symbol...).As promised, there's plenty of attention for nascent versions of most of the famous villains too. Camren Bicondova is Selena "Catwoman" Kyle (perhaps more anti-heroine than villain); Clare Foley is "Poison" Ivy Pepper; Cory Michael Smyth is a certain Mr E. Nygma; and we get a good chunk of Penguin origin story, with Oswald Cobblepot here imagined as a clammy street thug played by Robin Taylor.There's...

In a surprise decision, CBS has decided to renew its long-running but on the bubble crime procedural "The Mentalist". Showrunner Bruno Heller will now serve double-duty on both it and Fox's "Gotham".
That's the good news out of the the way. The bad news? The network has also finalised its list of cancellations with many of last season's new shows getting the chop.
On the drama side "Intelligence" and "Hostages" have both been axed. On the comedy side, "The Crazy Ones" and mid-season comedies "Bad Teacher" and "Friends with Better Lives" are all gone.
The network has also ordered seven new shows to join its line-up, most notably the latest spin-off "NCIS: New Orleans" with Scott Bakula and Cch Pounder. There's also the remake of "The Odd Couple," the sports-themed family comedy "McCarthy's, the high-profile buddy detective drama "Battle Creek" starring Josh Duhamel and Dean Winters, the Tea Leoni-led "Madam Secretary,...

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been renewed for a second season, and joining it will be Agent Carter, a Captain America: The First Avenger spin-off starring Hayley Atwell as the character who also starred in her own Marvel One-Shot short movie featured on the Iron Man 3 Blu-ray.
The first promo poster for Agent Carter can be seen above, but things are even busier on the DC front with Gotham, iZombie and The Flash all getting their own promo posters as well (nothing for Constantine just yet).
Gotham focuses on a young Detective Jim Gordon (played by Ben McKenzie) and his quest to find the murderer of Bruce Wayne’s parents, all while dealing with the men who will one day become members of Batman’s rogues gallery; The Riddler and Penguin for example.

CBS made their toughest calls of the season Saturday, rendering pickup verdicts on six bubble shows.
The good news: Long-running crime procedural The Mentalist will continue to a seventh season. The drama has struggled on Sunday nights in the ratings, but this season the series had a creative reboot which moved the show’s setting from Sacramento to Austin, Texas, after killing off Patrick Jane’s (Simon Baker) longtime nemesis Red John. Showrunner Bruno Heller will now serve double-duty on Mentalist and his new Fox series, Gotham.

There will be a happy ending for The Mentalist. After sitting heavily on the bubble for the first time, in grave danger of cancellation, the veteran drama has gotten a reprieve with an eleventh-hour renewal. CBS does not specify the size of the order but I hear it is likely for a 13-episode seventh and final season. That also would make sense given the enormous (for CBS standards) volume of new dramas that the network is adding with the pickup of six new series: NCIS: New Orleans, CSI: Cyber (likely one for fall one for midseason), Stalker, Scorpion, Madam Secretary and the straight-to-series Battle Creek. Related: CBS Cancels ‘The Crazy Ones’, ‘Friends With Better Lives’, ‘Bad Teacher’, ‘Intelligence’ & ‘Hostages’ The Mentalist creator Bruno Heller is segueing to his new Fox series Gotham, but I hear he will see his baby off, sharing co-showrunner duties with one of his lieutenants, Tom Szentgyorgyi.

DC Comics
Debuting in 1938 and 1939 respectively, Superman and Batman have always had an implicit correlation. The only reason Batman was even conceived by Bill Finger and Bob Kane was due to DC Comics wanting to create a hero like Superman. Keep in mind this is before there was really a “superhero” genre to draw from, so they seemed similar enough.
Ironically, the characters have been re-envisioned over time as diametrically opposed. Superman – the “Blue Boy Scout” – surveys Metropolis, a city that is as much the pinnacle of civilization as he is the pinnacle of heroism. Batman – the “Dark Knight Detective” – prowls Gotham, a slum so corrupt that it warrants having a shadowy vigilante protecting it. They’re kinda different. As such, the notion of the two having a conflict with each other has come up several times in the history of the franchises.
