License to laugh

Warning: Spoilers
Plot; Barry finally gets his driver's License only to have Bev watch him that much more closely.

It's become pretty clear that Barry is the breakout star. The show tries to spread the spotlight evenly, but nary and episode goes by that doesn't have Barry front and center. Which is okay, as he's the best character.

More timelines that don't match

Warning: Spoilers
It's established that this episode is set in 1986, however, when we see Barry at the theater after he gets his license, the movie they are playing is Short Circuit 2 which premiered in theaters July 1988. Many mistake it for part one, but the scene includes Michael McKean who was only in the sequel. The scene itself is when Johnny 5 invades a bookstore.

A good episode for the younger Goldbergs

Barry's just gotten his license, and you can pretty much see where this is going. But it's still fun to see him blow it. There are actually a couple of nice dynamics here. Erica and Barry, for instance, (thus far unexplored). And Adam's the one who gets Pops to realize that he has family that worries about his safety.

Ultimately, it's really about telling Mom what she wants to hear, and making life easier for everyone. Murray has some great one-liners here.

Timelines do not match Actual Events

Murray is excited to watch the Phillies in the World Series, but keeps getting interrupted while watching a recording of the game, and has people spoil the results. This episode is supposedly set in 1986, as seen on the drivers license and also the fact Short Circuit is in the theatre. The Phillies did not play in the World Series in 1986, (the Mets did, the infamous Bill Buckner game). The Phillies won the 1980 World Series, and lost to the Orioles I'm 1983 (the I-95 Series). Apparently Murray was watching a 3 year old recording.

Call Me When You Get There

Warning: Spoilers
I said that 'The Goldbergs' was shooting itself in the creative foot by not planting itself into one specific 80's year, and the fact that the timelines here don't match is the proof.

This aside though this is another stellar episode, and one that thankfully gives Barry/Erica a bit more to do. If anything Adam is the straight man of the show, as Malcolm and Kevin were in their shows that 'The Goldbergs' seems determined to mimic.

With some nice points made about accepting getting older, this was a lot of fun.
