‘Ladies in Black.’
The Australian titles released in cinemas this year including holdovers will overtake the calendar 2017 total in the next week or so, boosted by Bruce Beresford’s Ladies in Black.
Through the end of September the Oz films and feature docs had grossed $47.8 million, according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia (Mpdaa), within spitting distance of last year’s $49.4 million.
After a second weekend drop of just 10 per cent Ladies in Black’s takings have increased by nearly $800,000 to $5.97 million, including $361,000 on Tuesday, so the 1950s-set comedy-drama distributed by Sony is on course to surpass $12 million.
Distributed by Universal Pictures as an alternate content release, Mark Joffe’s biopic Jimmy Barnes: Working Class Boy rang up $823,000, ranking as the year’s second biggest feature doc behind Paul Damian Williams’ Gurrumul, which made $984,000.

Phil Matarese and Mike Luciano are not only the creators of HBO’s adult cartoon series “Animals”; they’re also the show’s animators, directors, writers and bringers of coffee.
Are they control freaks? “We have production coordinators and all that,” says Matarese, “but when it comes to the nitty-gritty of quality control, I oversee every single step of it, and we’re very much ingrained in every aspect of the show.”
One of the draws for fans is the show’s star talent, who, along with Matarese and Luciano, provide the voices for the various animals. Names include Aziz Ansari, Molly Shannon, Mindy Kaling, RuPaul, Jonah Hill, Usher, Demi Moore, Lucy Liu and Michael Sheen. Humans also populate this anthropomorphic world.
“Animals” started as a YouTube short inspired by the pigeons cavorting outside the office windows of Matarese and Luciano, who worked at a New York ad agency at the time.

“Random Acts of Flyness” may play like one grand television experiment — its sketch-like segments hinge on a whimsical but distinctly dark sense of humor when tackling topics such as patriarchy, white supremacy, and black sensuality — but don’t call it “experimental.”
“I don’t see the show as experimental,” said director, writer, and creator Terence Nance in a recent phone interview with IndieWire. “Definitely avant-garde, but I think the people in the writer’s room are all very skilled at engaging audiences very viscerally in terms of like — ‘Are we going to be able to get people to engage with this consistently, in the way they would sit down and watch ‘Seinfeld’?”
Nance had been kicking around the idea for a television show since 2006, six years before his debut feature-length film, “An Oversimplification of Her Beauty,” put him on the map with a well-reviewed premiere at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival.

Poor Demi Moore! The A-list actress' American Express credit card was allegedly stolen recently, Entertainment Tonight revealed. The news outlet has reported that in mid-March, a man named David Matthew Read stole the card and allegedly spent a whopping $169,000 on it at stores like Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Avenue in La (there is reportedly video surveillance to prove it). (Photo Credit: Getty Images) But Demi wasn't the one to notice the unusual statement. Apparently, her assistant reached out to the credit card company to report the fraudulent acts but soon learned someone had already reported the card stolen and requested a replacement — but it wasn't her. "D.M.'s personal assistant stated that neither she nor D.M. made this report or request," said the document obtained by Et. Read allegedly requested a new card via FedEx and he was somehow able to pick it up... In early April, Read was...

HBO has just released the trailer for the third season of their underrated animated comedy “Animals.” and it looks, well, insane. The Duplass Brothers produced show has built a small, but loyal, following since it’s premiere in 2016 and despite being only produced by the brothers, it follows their improvisational films and TV shows. As with the first two seasons, writers Phil Matarese and Mike Luciano wrote plot outlines for the voice actors and animated over their improvisation.

When music supervisor Maggie Phillips joined the creative team on Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” in season two she wanted to “feature more female artists” on the soundtrack because “it’s such a female-driven show.” The Emmy Award-winning series imagines a future in which women are forced to become concubines in a theocratic society, and it centers on one woman, June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss), who fights against that system. Phillips chose songs to reflect June’s music taste, asking herself, “What would she have played in her head?” June “seems like the kind of lady that would want a lady representing her,” so Phillips sought out female vocalists and musicians to underscore various scenes. Though Jeremiah Zagar has been directing shorts and documentaries since 2004, We The Animals marks his first feature narrative film. Adapted from Justin Torres’s novel, Animals gives a name to the source text’s unnamed narrator: Jonah (Evan Rosado), a young boy growing up in ’80s upstate NYC against the background of his parents’ unstable marriage and growing awareness of his own queerness. Editor Keiko Deguchi spoke to Filmmaker about her work on the film, which split the Next Innovator Award (chosen by a single juror, RuPaul) with Jordana Spiro’s Night Comes On. Before Sundance fully embraced television, it was already making small screen dreams come true.
“Last year, our wildest dream coming into the Episodic Short Form program was to sell our web series to television, and that’s exactly what happened,” Josh Feldman and Shoshannah Stern said to IndieWire.
Feldman and Stern created a series called “The Chances” that premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. It’s returning to Sundance in 2018, but this time as a fully-fledged TV show with distribution, a full first season in the can, and an official release date — February 14, 2018.
“That web series was picked up from Sundance last year by Sundance Now, developed out from its short-form to a long-form of 22-minute episodes […] and they’ve already shot the first season,” Sundance programmer Charlie Sextro said in an interview with IndieWire. “So we’re showing that in our independent series, because it’s Sundance Now, but...

Don’t let the title fool you: The Sundance Film Festival has been featuring television programs for years, be it the slew of documentaries that end up on HBO, Showtime, and Netflix or pilots that earn a special showcase like “Animals.” did in 2015.
But 2018 is special. This year, Sundance is dedicating an entire section to episodic programming, including short-form series, docu-series, traditional pilots, and more experimental premieres. It’s all coming together under the Indie Episodic banner, and it’s all designed with one clear mission:
“There is no clear path to series if you’re trying to do it independently — if you’re going to try and shoot your own pilot, and then try and get picked up,” Sundance programmer Charlie Sextro told IndieWire. “There’s a clear way [in] making an independent film: It gets picked up at Sundance, and then it gets out to the world. It’s...

The following article contains minor spoilers for “Blade Runner 2049.”
In addition to a pair of memorable performances from Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford, cinematographer Roger Deakins’ stunning visual work, and director Denis Villeneuve’s dystopian vision, “Blade Runner 2049” has one more element worthy of excitement: a supporting cast of new and rising stars. Many of them have already made their mark on indie cinema, like the perpetually working David Dastmalchian or the irreverent Carla Juri, while others will likely use Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic as a springboard for even bigger careers (like Ana de Armas, the film’s biggest find).

Hmm, so the Ghost Riders travel by lightning, you say? It's a shame we don't know a kitsune...
On Teen Wolf Season 6 Episode 4, Mason uncovered some decent intel on the Ghost Riders, but, of course, there are still a gazillion and one questions.
For instance, why are there all of a sudden like 20 Ghost Riders, and why can everyone see them now?
Seriously, by the end of the hour, Scott, Malia, and Chris can see the Ghost Riders. The newbies all saw them at the party, so the only "safe" people are Melissa, Lydia, Natalie, and Finstock. It is a little strange that a good bit of our main characters can see them now because this means that they all have a countdown clock to erasure.
It's a little hard to believe that everyone who has seen the Ghost Riders (aka the majority of the cast) will be taken, but if they aren't,...

With the commencement of Amsterdam Dance Event, Martin Garrix has been busy unleashing a steady stream of new releases. The producer promised to drop seven new tracks over seven days, and so far we’ve been treated to “Hold On And Believe,” “Spotless” with Jay Hardway, as well as “Wiee” and “Sun Is Never Going Down.” As if that weren’t enough to prove that the Dutch DJ loves his fans, Garrix just stepped up to the plate with another major giveaway.
A fan by the name of Chris McPhadden had purchased tickets to see Garrix perform during Ade, only to later realize he didn’t have the funds to purchase air fare to the major festival. He initially decided to give the tickets away for free, but ultimately opted to reach out on Twitter for help.

Chris here. We're pretty jazzed about Tom Ford's meta-noir Nocturnal Animals in these parts, even with (or because of) festival reactions are all over the map from negative to positive. Whether or not the film is a potential awards player, it did pick up the Grand Jury Prize in Venice and even the poor reviews call out Michael Shannon as a highlight. However, the buried lede in all of the conversation (and the just-launched trailer) is the buzzed about cameo by The Lovely Laura Linney, whose character shows up like this:
Praise the heavens, she's no longer a supportive wife trapped on a phone! And now she's letting her hair down up. Some takeaways:
Category is: Oliver Stone First Lady Before She Betrays Him And Country Realness She's drowning in hair, pearls, and stiff fabric, yet her face is still luminous. The role may be small, but when has she...

Don’t expect to see any more “Star Wars” parodies from Fox’s animated hit “Family Guy.”
The show produced three “Star Wars” homages (2007’s “Blue Harvest,” 2009’s “Something, Something, Something Dark Side” and 2010’s “It’s a Trap!”) several years ago. But that was back before Disney acquired Lucasfilm and jumpstarted the franchise.
“The new regime is a little more difficult to deal with,” executive producer Alec Sulkin said. “Before we were just dealing with Lucasfilm. Seth [MacFarlane] had a good relationship with them. It’s not that Seth has a bad relationship with Disney, but they’re a bit more rigid.”
Executive producer Rich Appel said it was understandable, as “they’re a little more careful now that they’re rolling out new movies.”

Chicago – Sometimes you just need a break, that small window of opportunity to burst through and make the mark. Actor David Dastmalchian knows all about that phenomenon, as he produced and starred in his semi-autobiographical film “Animals,” and got the break of a lifetime landing a role in the film, “The Dark Knight.”
Dastmalchian is a consummate and enthusiastic gentleman, a performer who works hard, but has a humble and appealing attitude of gratitude. His star is ascending further this summer as he scored another role in a superhero epic, this time for Marvel Films, alongside Paul Rudd in “Ant-Man.” David Dastmalchian and director Collin Schiffli will also make a Chicago appearance this week (Friday, May 22nd, 2015) for the Chicago Opening Night screening of “Animals,” part of a limited nationwide release. Click here for details and ticket purchasing information for the Chicago screening.

[Editor's Note: This post is presented in partnership with Time Warner Cable Movies On Demand in support of Indie Film Month. Today's pick, "Animals," is available now On Demand. Need help finding a movie to watch? Let TWC find the best fit for your mood here.] The initial scenes featuring young couple Bobbie (Kim Shaw) and Jude (David Dastmalchian) in director Colin Schiffli's "Animals" are so precious that it comes as a shock to discover that they're both heroin addicts. Living out of a decrepit car parked near the Chicago Zoo, Bobbie and Jude team up to keep their habit alive, which at first provides them with enough confidence to ignore the downward spiral they're trapped within. By letting the troubles creep in, Schiffli's accomplished first feature — scripted by Dastmalchian — makes their conundrum both accessible and intimately unsettling at once. At first, however, their routine flows along as if they've mastered the con artistry keeping...

David Dastmalchian will appear in this summer's new Marvel franchise Ant-Man, but Animals is probably way more important to him, considering he wrote it. The premise — homeless drug addicts in love — is depressing, but as directed by Collin Schiffli, the film has warmth and humor, ultimately conveying a sense of redemptive hope that Dastmalchian likely brings to the table. He plays Jude, a junkie who lives in a car with the love of his life, Bobbie (Kim Shaw, who's great). At the film's outset, the pair are in relatively good shape, affectionate and playful despite homelessness, but living close to the edge of their resources and the bottom of their stash. Their marginal life is financed with petty theft and clever cons — they're both educ...

Even if you don't know the name, you'd likely recognize David Dastmalchian. He's bagged roles in movies like Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" and Denis Villeneuve's "Prisoners," and later this summer you'll see him in "Ant-Man." He's also a budding screenwriter, and his latest film "Animals" made its debut last spring at SXSW where he received a Special Jury Award for Courage In Storytelling. This weekend, you can see what impressed the jury in Austin. Starring Dastmalchian alongside Kim Shaw with Collin Schiffli directing, the film tracks a Chicago couple weighted down by addiction and a life-altering setback. And as you'll see in this clip, it's a highly visual effort that gets up close with the characters, from swooning highs to bottomless lows. "Animals" opens in limited release on May 15th. Watch below.
