On the occasion of his latest film “Limbo” screening at Berlinale, we speak to the director about genre filmmaking, the film’s visual style, Hong Kong slums, the #MeToo movement, the state of Hong Kong cinema and more.
The film seems to recreate the impressive atmosphere of Johnnie To’s crime movies. Was that one of your purposes, particularly in the action aspect?

Solidly-established Hong Kong film director Soi Cheang returns to action with the new crime thriller “Limbo.” He says his ambition is to revive the former glory of the city’s action cinema by targeting international audiences outside China.
Announced just ahead of the opening of Wednesday’s FilMart, which has been postponed from its usual March slot and changed to an online format due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, “Limbo” is financed and distributed Sun Entertainment Culture, Erdong Pictures Group and Bona Film Group. It is aiming for a theatrical release in Hong Kong, Europe and the U.S. in 2021. Shan Ding is consulting on the film’s international sales.
It is unclear whether a mainland China release is either possible, or envisaged. “Regardless of the progress and situation in Mainland China, our release plan remains unchanged and Limbo is slated for a 2021 worldwide release. Our international sales and release plan won’t be affected,...

The O.G. of TV true crime has returned. Before there was Making a Murderer, Tiger King, The Jinx, and Serial, the nation’s fix for real-life murder tales came in weekly doses courtesy of Unsolved Mysteries, which ran interrupted from 1987 to 2002. Since the series left airwaves, the genre has grown into a powerhouse: Some networks dedicate their entire programming slate to it (hi, Oxygen), and streaming services rely on true-crime for viral hits.
Yet, 33 years after its debut, old episodes of Unsolved Mysteries remain a profoundly bingeable experience, thanks...

Besides bringing a great selection of films to Afm including Supremacy, The Last 5 Years, Rob the Mob, Ron Howard's Made in America, and Swelter, The Exchange will also debut sales for their film Accident, an interesting 3D film and Midnight Rider: The Gregg Allman Story.
Accident
Directed by Dan Tondowski, Accident is a 3D thrill ride based on a true story and it includes incredible new SFX effects by Simon Hansen who previously worked on Chronicle, and will be produced by Ryan Haidarian (Vehicle 19) and Guillaume Benski (2009 Cannes Director's Fortnight's Navidad). Thomas Mann (Project X) and Ashley Hinshaw (Chronicle) will star in Accident. The other leads of the film will be announced shortly
The film follows four teenagers who "borrow" a car for one night of fun and thrills. But what starts as a wild joy ride turns into a nightmare. After a violent crash, they discover that being stuck at the bottom of a ravine in an overturned car is the least of their problems. The psychotic owner of the car that they stole has them in his cross-hairs and he will stop at nothing to get back the car and its valuable contents.
"We are extremely excited to be involved with Accident and this very talented team. The demand for high concept, 3D action thrillers that are unique and marketable is very high. We feel that this film could be a real breakout success for our buyers and we are excited to bring it to market," said O'Shea.
Midnight Rider: The Gregg Allman Story
Based on the New York Times bestselling autobiography of the iconic blues singer, the screenplay was written by Unclaimed Freight Production's Randall Miller and Jody Savin, and will be directed by Miller himself.
The film focuses on Allman's early struggles through the formation of The Allman Brothers Band and the group's ultimate explosion on the music scene. On the heels of successful music biopics such as Ray and Walk the Line comes Gregg Allman's Midnight Rider, a searing and revealing look inside the man who was at the forefront of Rock 'n' Roll and the lead singer of one of the biggest American bands of all time. The film captures two of the most defining chapters of Gregg's life, when The Allman Brothers Band was just getting under way and the earlier years when Gregg, after years of drugs and alcohol abuse, cleans himself up. Chronicling his life on the road and the pitfalls of super stardom, Midnight Rider ultimately creates an uplifting tale of a rock icon as he finds his way through the darkness into the light .
In order to infuse the film with authenticity, both Savin and Miller are working closely with Allman and his manager, Michael Lehman, both of whom will serve as executive producers. The film will include original Allman Brothers tracks as well as performances by the actor/musicians. Open Road will theatrically release the film in the Us.
"This powerful story of one man's journey through his brilliant and tumultuous rock 'n' roll career is extremely compelling and will be of keen interest to our international buyers," said O'Shea
