Not so lucky in love
TheLittleSongbird3 October 2023
The previous 2014 Hallmark films varied in quality. While 'A Ring in Spring' was a real winner, there was also the disaster that was 'My Gal Sunday'. Was not sure how 'Lucky in Love' was going to turn out, despite the title sounding very charming the premise was less so and was one that could go either way. There were elements that had potential to be charming, but others that could be potentially cruel. Was certainly not expecting it to be original, Hallmark did similar stories since (films though seen prior to this) with variable success.

'Lucky in Love' left me mixed. There are good things about it that does make it watchable that makes it one of the middling 2014 Hallmark films, namely the two leads. It also however falls significantly short in too many major areas for me to recommend, such as the story execution, the music, the ending and how difficult it was for me to connect with the female lead character. It is far from being a terrible film, have already said that it is watchable, but it really isn't particularly good. Can totally see why reviews for 'Lucky in Love' here have been divided.

Starting with the good things, Jessica Szohr gives her all and does have heartfelt moments. Benjamin Hollingsworth is a charming male lead. The supporting cast are more than acceptable, even though the characters are very cliched and recycled ones at that. The film did have some charming and light hearted moments.

It also looks nice, particularly the scenery which is complemented well by the slick photography.

However, the story is very formulaic with no surprises, there is so much over familiarity to every typical Hallmark trope thrown in with not an awful lot done with them. Making the film feel very predictable and mundane, and the film tends to drag, especially when the story got thinner. Absolutely agree about the ending being the kind that can be seen from a long way off and it is executed in a far too pat and unrealistically rushed way that jars with what was seen before.

Also agree about the constant, incredibly repetitive and twee music, that was often inappropriately placed, being really distracting. It does drown out some of the dialogue, which was very stilted and corn and cheese filled anyway. While Szohr does well in her role, her character was not easy to root for. She sounded very relatable on paper, but she came over in the film as too self-absorbed and snobbish and excessively so (really did feel sorry for her friends). Really did not buy how long it took so long for her to find out the truth about a certain character when it was not that subtle to the viewer. While she and Hollingsworth are good individually, they mostly lack spark and are too low key together.

Overall, mixed feelings here. 5/10.

Pleasant and predictable
phd_travel1 November 2017
Jessica Szhor of Gossip Girl plays an executive who gets a promotion upwards and meets her prince charming. However when she gets her promotion she struggles with being the boss instead of the underling and also has no place in her life for her new guy.

There is a fairly predictable story about how she can't have it all - the career and the guy. It is so impossible? What's the message anyway - you can't have both? Jessica looks prettier than in GG. Wouldn't have pegged her look for the romantic lead always though she is more the supporting best friend. But she cleans up nicely. Benjamin Hollingsworth is her good friend who is secretly in love with her. The ending is predicable.

Supercute and fun Hallmark movie!

I really enjoyed this one. Who doesn't dream of a perfect career, great apartment, and the perfect best friend? The ending was even better than I expected.

Standard Hallmark schlock
caseybones12 April 2014
Warning: Spoilers
CONTAINS SPOILERS

Typical formulaic schlock. If you couldn't foresee the ending in the first 10 minutes then you've never watched a Hallmark movie. And the intrusive bland tuneless piano music is relentless – I don't think there were more than 10 minutes in the whole movie where there was enough silence to hear the dialog.

Girl is secretly loved by nerdy co-worker. Girl makes wishes (big promotion, handsome boyfriend, big house). Girl miraculously gets what she wished for (big promotion, handsome boyfriend, big house). Everything fine for 10 minutes and then everything starts to unravel (blows off friends who won't come to see her because her house is too far away, nerd leaves and takes another job, alienates team with her snotty attitude, allows handsome boyfriend to call the shots). Girl miraculously sees the light (inspires previous superior at work to become a better man, whips her team into shape and saves the day, sees new boyfriend as the shallow cad that he is, and realizes that she and the nerd were meant to be). Requisite "running through the streets because can't get a cab and arriving too late" scene followed by meeting the nerd just by chance and seeing the light.

That's two hours of my life I'll never get back.

Her Lucky Day-Lucky in Love ***
edwagreen6 April 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Perhaps, if they played You'd Be So Easy to Love as the title theme song as the credits came out, this would have enhanced this film.

Mira is played by someone who resembles Anne Bancroft in her early years. She strives for perfection and seems to hit the jackpot in one day, when she gets stuck in the elevator with her top executive and shows her an idea she has for their computer social network business. Her immediate boss had really ignored her and was up for a top promotion. She gets the top position instead and meets the guy of her dreams in a chance meeting all in one day.

The film tries to bring out that getting your wish isn't everything, especially the financial angle as well.

The film reinforces the idea that the best management allows for collective collaboration and interaction among its employees to attain their ideas.

bland Hallmark movie
SnoopyStyle18 September 2017
Mira Simon (Jessica Szohr) dreams of the perfect life. Her co-worker friend Jonah has a crush on her. It's April Fool's Day. Sophie tries to set her up but Mira pretends Liam as her new boyfriend. She delivers papers to a nice apartment and pranks her roommates that it's her new place. She pranks Jonah that she got a big promotion from CEO Erin Billings (Deidre Hall) and then she gets stuck in the elevator with her. Suddenly, all of her pranks come true but her new perfect life isn't quite as good as expected.

This is a Hallmark movie. It's not a sin but this is so bland. It is lifeless. Jessica Szohr is a perfectly engaging lead. Jonah has the potential for a nice rom-com but he is no more than a side character. This simply lacks substance.

Unlucky in love concert
bookandcandle31 May 2014
After one hour of watching Lucky in Love, I turned it off. This Hallmark movie had a cute story with personable actors, but there was continual repetitive "bing-bong" music in the background playing that was louder than the speaking. Instead of this being a movie, it became a concert.

Years ago the Classic Movies only had music playing when there was a climatic or action scene, but not while people were speaking. You could hear every word clearly then. Now you have to try and listen to both the speaking and a concert at the same time. My family and I have excellent hearing, but the music is just too loud and too annoying to keep the movie on. Why does Hallmark insist on ruining all their delightful movies? Their movies were not like this years ago.

I love Hallmark's predictable, happy endings. Please keep making them without the music while the actors are speaking. Thank you.

2 Thumbs Up!!
barbelyett30 April 2018
Lucky in Love touches on a theme that is true for many of us - that the perfect life we've dreamed of may not be as perfect as we think. Mira Simon (Jessica Szohr) literally has her dream life dropped in her lap - dream career, dream apartment, dream guy. At first it's exciting but the more she lives her perfect life the less perfect it becomes for her. The experience of having it all enables her to understand that her real "perfect" life may be something other than what she envisioned, yet more perfect than what she could have ever imagined.

I change my vote!

Warning: Spoilers
When I first saw this movie 4 or 5 years ago, I gave it a 5. I just rewatched it and I am bumping my grade up to an 8. Unfortunately, this is a sad commentary on how mediocre the current crop of Hallmark-type movies are. They now churn them out so frequently, that the quality of the acting, plot, chemistry between the leads, directing and writing has inevitably suffered. Consequently, when I see one that is half-way decent or has one great thing going for it, it earns a 7,8, or 9 from me. This one features some actors who have since made it pretty big in Hallmark-Land. namely Benjamin Hollingsworth, Ryan Kennedy, and Peter Benson. And low and behold Cindy Busby in a bit part as a friend of our heroine and barely recognizable with brown hair. I loved Jessica Szohr in the lead role. She was very exotic looking and a far cry from the pageant ready looks favored by most hallmark heroines. Her acting was top notch as well, and I loved the ups and downs she goes through to achieve her happy ending and the right man for her. All in all, it was very entertaining, especially they didn't cling to stereo type black or white characterizations. The guy who was the initial "villain" turns out to be a great guy, and our good girl heroine turns into a bit of a bItch before she sees the error of her ways. It looks like Jessica has gone on to other projects besides Hallmark. Hallmark would do well to groom more female leads with her range and interesting looks.
