Paramount+ has set the premiere date for the all-new documentary June, which will debut on the streaming platform on January 16th, 2024. Directed by Emmy Award-winner Kristen Vaurio, the film will shine a light on the life and work of the late June Carter Cash — five-time Grammy Award-winning singer, comedian, musician, actor, and author.
June will feature never-before-seen archival footage alongside interviews with Carter Cash, her loved ones, and names like Dolly Parton, Reese Witherspoon, and Willie Nelson. The unprecedented look into Carter Cash’s legacy aims to tell her story beyond her association with her husband, Johnny Cash.
On the significance of directing this story, Vaurio said, “She’s a woman whom many people are aware of, but few know much about her remarkable life and her deep contributions to country music.”
Carlene Carter, Carter Cash’s first daughter, added, “This film offers a great opportunity to realize that June...

What made the original "Frasier" series so good? It's a question we at /Film have been feverishly searching for answers to in light of Paramount+'s release of the "Frasier" revival, which is quite mixed, if it's the original series you're holding it to as a standard. There aren't as many jokes per minute, the understanding of its central character isn't always perfect, and they're only just figuring out which elements from the original series were okay to discard, and which needed to be in the mix for the cake to come out tasty.
One of the shakier aspects of this calculus has been the revival's handling of its character dynamics. This is a fully defensible area of weakness -- character dynamics are both the hardest aspect of sitcoms to iron out and the singular aspect that makes them soar or sink. Opinions vary, but if you ask for mine,...

“Missing,” the latest release from Sony Pictures Entertainment, is told entirely through computer screens and smartphones.
Storm Reid is June, a daughter using modern technology to track down her mom, played by Nia Long, who has gone missing thousands of miles away in Colombia.
Nicholas Johnson and Will Merrick’s follow-up to the 2018 thriller “Searching” posed a challenge for editors Austin Keeling and Arielle Zakowsk about how to tell the story and create tension as June races against the clock to find her mother.
Says Keeling, “Arielle and I took screenshots on our computers and put together the whole movie as a temp version. We were able to play around through the editing process and choose how to cover June’s laptop, how to tell it in the most effective way.”

Every so often, you’ll see a portrait-of-the-artist documentary that’s so beautifully made, about a figure of such unique fascination, whose art is so perfectly showcased by the documentary format, that when it’s over you can’t believe the film hadn’t existed until now. It feels, in its way, essential. “Nam June Paik: Moon Is the Oldest TV” is like that. Directed by Amanda Kim, it’s a tantalizing portrait of Nam June Paik, the revolutionary Korean-born video artist who, in the late ’60s and ’70s, did nothing less than invent an art form.
When he was first becoming famous, about 50 years ago, you’d go to see a Nam June Paik installation at someplace like the Museum of Modern Art, and it would seem quirky and exotic — a tower of stacked TV screens, all flashing what looked like the squiggly visual equivalent of feedback. It was weird and kind of gripping,...

June 2 marks 20 years since HBO’s legendary crime drama The Wire first aired. And while it’s now thought of as an all-time classic, that wasn’t always evident to audiences early on. To honor its 20 years as a TV staple, let’s talk about how the program evolved and why it remains such an influential work today.
These are the 20 reasons the show is relevant in 2022.
1. Policing As a Broken Institution
The show was one of the first post-9/11 properties to depict police as imperfect individuals rather than flawless heroes, and law enforcement as a thoroughly flawed institution. The motivations of the police officers in The Wire are often immoral and the discussion of how to fix policing in America is one that we are still having two decades later.

January is usually referred to as the theatrical industry’s dumping ground, where projects destined to fail are shoved out into the world to die a slow and painful death at the box office. Obviously, next month could see almost every new release face a similar fate as business is still showing no signs of recovery, but Netflix are looking to buck the trend and rehabilitate January’s reputation as a safe haven for fresh content, and the streaming service have some major original movies and TV shows on the horizon.
The most exciting without a doubt is History of Swear Words, which sees Nicolas Cage hosting a six-episode series that delves into the origins and multiple uses of profanity. Anyone who doesn’t have their curiosity immediately piqued by the idea of Hollywood’s most manic and memeable actor fronting a show where the episodes are titled “F*ck...

Things have been pretty quiet on the movie front for a while, given the pandemic, but this weekend marks a major upswing in content for cinema lovers, with multiple brand new releases available. Judd Apatow’s The King of Staten Island is unfortunately not up for streaming at present, but Netflix Original Da 5 Bloods, the latest effort from the Oscar-winning Spike Lee, is. For family audiences, there’s also Artemis Fowl over on Disney Plus, which was originally set for a theatrical release back in May.
Even outside of these new films though, there’s plenty of fresh titles coming to the various streaming services this weekend, from classic movies, recent hits, new TV series, old TV series, etc. Whatever combination of services you’re subscribed to, you can fill your whole weekend watching what’s coming to Netflix, Disney Plus, Amazon, HBO Max and the rest over the next few days.

For Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale,” series creator Bruce Miller has collected three consecutive Best Drama Writing Emmy nominations: two individual ones for the pilot “Offred” in 2017 — for which he won — and the Season 2 opener “June” in 2018, and one shared with co-writer Kira Snyder for Season 2’s 11th hour “Holly” in 2019, when the show competed for the final three orphaned episodes of that season. He can extend his streak with the show’s third installment, but will the Emmys embrace him a fourth time?
Miller launched and concluded the season with “Night” and “Mayday” respectively, which are the only two episodes he penned this time around. We won’t know which one he will enter until the nominating ballots are released in a few months, but for now let’s break down his two options:

With the Emmys telecast around the corner on Monday night, September 17, “The Americans” has moved into the lead in our predictions for Best Drama Writing for its series finale episode, “Start,” penned by showrunners Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg. But don’t be so sure. Our top users are still predicting a repeat win for “The Handmaid’s Tale.”
As of this writing “The Americans” has a narrow advantage with odds of 13/10. That’s thanks in large part to the Expert journalists we’ve polled, who have really rallied around the FX spy drama. Currently 13 of our 24 Experts think it will win: Jen Chaney (Vulture), Eric Deggans (NPR), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Chris Harnick (E!), Kelly Lawler (USA Today), Kerr Lordygan (Rotten Tomatoes), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby), Lynette Rice (Entertainment Weekly), Matt Roush (TV Guide Magazine), Kaitlin Thomas (TVGuide.com), Ben Travers (IndieWire), Matt Webb Mitovich (TVLine) and Susan Wloszczyna...

“By default, since I am predicting ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ to win Best Drama Series, I should be predicting it to win Best Drama Writing,” Zach Laws explains to me and fellow Gold Derby contributors Tom O’Brien, Tony Ruiz and Amanda Spears in our Emmy predictions slugfest (watch above). This Best Drama Writing race pits “The Handmaid’s Tale,” which won both Drama Series and Drama Writing last year, against “Game of Thrones,” which won Drama Series and Drama Writing in 2015 and 2016 before the show’s lengthy hiatus kept it out of competition in 2017.
Laws thinks “the smart bet is whatever you’re picking to win Best Drama Series, pick that to win Best Drama Writing because that’s probably what’s going to happen.” Ruiz adds that “the pilot of ‘Killing Eve’ is such a beautiful piece of writing, but I’m somewhat hesitant to put it higher...

The investigation into the unsolved double slayings of an American man and his Canadian girlfriend in Belize earlier this year now includes a person of interest somewhere in the United States, as the FBI continues to probe the mysterious killings, the slain man’s mother tells People.
Char DeVoursney, whose son Drew DeVoursney was found strangled in early May in northern Belize, says a federal agent continues to investigate what happened, traveling regularly between America and the Central American country.
“A lot of them were over there in the very beginning and then the one FBI agent we heard got assigned to the case.

But one person was notably missing: Moore’s father, Ronald Grant.
At the time, the 46-year-old reality star told People that Grant was celebrating his birthday in Jamaica during their nuptials.

Twenty years after the director Paul Verhoeven's original Starship Troopers film was released, fans will be getting an animated sequel! It's called Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars and it will even feature actors from the cast of the original film.
Casper Van Dien will reprise his role as Johnny Rico and Dina Meyer will be back as Dizzy Flores in the CG animated film. They will be joined by stand-up comedian and actor DeRay Davis. Those are the only cast members we've learned about so far.
One of the cooler things about this project is that the script was written by Ed Neumeier, who wrote the original Starship Troopers film as well as Verhoeven's Robocop. According to THR:
The movie sees Rico demoted and relocated to a satellite station on Mars, while the Federation moves to attack the home planet of the bugs — but Mars just so happens...
