"Vom Fischer und seiner Frau" is a new version of the famous Brothers Grimm fairytale directed by Christian Theede and written by Dieter and Leonie Bongartz (father-daughter pairing I believe). Theede has worked on several of the new fairytale movie shown on ARD and ZDF these days. And the cast is not too bad either. Fabian Busch (not too familiar with him) plays the male lead character and has been in "Downfall" and "The Reader" for example. Katarina Schüttler plays his wife and she is one of Germany's most famous younger actresses right now. The fish is voiced by famous TV detective Jan Fedder. His Northern Germany origins fit the filmy nicely.

It's a tale of greed. The fisherman saves the fish's life and the fish grants him many wishes therefore. The man's woman wants more and more, her own house, become a nobleman, become king, become emperor, become Pope (the first female by the way) and finally become God. The final twist was kind of unclear to me in this movie. Living like God means having nothing I guess? Anyway, in the end they are back to where they started, but happy together again and with a child coming soon.

Schüttler's character was maybe the most fascinating thing about this movie. Her good looks probably helped in making her the main antagonist, but you still don't hate her as in the end she is on the good side again. Also the use of "I" and "we" was pretty interesting. All in all, if you like fairy tales, this is worth a watch. Most of these new German versions are pretty decent and that includes this one.
