"Hüter meines Bruders" tells the story of a young man whose brother goes missing from one moment to another. Searching for hints to find him and solve the mystery, the brother's life begins to get more and more appealing to him and soon he finds himself adapting to the new found life.
In a skilfull way, the movie touches questions of identity and the question who we want to be and who we are instead. It shows how appealing it can be to break out of responsibilities and what dangers a loss of identity can have. In weaker moments, the film uses too many typical style and plot elements of your typical above-than-average German smaller production and thus becomes a bit random but in its strong moments, it can be deeply touching and draws you into its dark and twisted world.
All in all I find this to be a great approach to a few very important questions. Rather a small and silent addition than a scandalous outcry but not less worthy.
