Strong episode with interesting subject matter and character twists

Phillip has to retrieve data from ARPANET whilst Nina faces the Polygraph test.

I enjoyed this episode for the interesting details about the ARPANET, the character twists and how it creates intrigue for what is sure to be explosive events to come.

The story was quite plot driven and tech-heavy with it's glimpse into a future that (as I type an online review) we all know will evolve into the the Information Age we live in today. Mixed in with this was Nina and her date with the lie-detector, which also has a strong build up and very interesting aftermath.

All of this leaves many characters in an intriguing place, particularly Nina who is fast becoming one of the most compelling characters on the show. Is she for one side or the other, or is she merely a very efficient survivor who will play both sides to her advantage when necessary? For now I'm going for the latter, but I'll probably be proven wrong!

Many potentially dramatic situations are set up with characters like Lucia, Larrick, Kate, Duluth and even Henry seemingly on dodgy ground given some of the behaviour they are displaying.

All performances are excellent as ever with Annet Mahendru for me being the most memorable, whilst the cinematography and editing are also strong, conveying the story in a visual way.

Warning: Spoilers
Spy stuff aside, what a geeky flashback episode this was! PDP-10, TOPS-20, IBM 3270 block transfer terminals. And RS-232-C, the port Phillip plugged into. Let's see, at that time the max RS-232 speed was about 2 KBps, so in thirty seconds Phillip would have swept up... about sixty kilobytes, probably a small fraction of the size of the web page you're reading this review on. Ah, but which 60KB, which is about thirty typed pages? Maybe some MILNET encryption data? Early DES keys were only seven bytes long, and the DES S-Box substitution lists were only 32 bytes. Like they said in the episode, this was before the split between military MILNET and scientific ARPANET in 1983, so maybe Phillip got some very valuable kilobytes.

So Stan knows that Nina knows that Stan killed Vlad. Interesting that the question came up in the lie detector interview. But was Nina lying and... clenching? Quite the game the characters (and writers) are playing. Good stuff, as always.

Spy games

Warning: Spoilers
More spy games. The pawns and movements are aligned. The trap, or honey pot, is set for Stan. Nina learns how to beat a polygraph test. Which side is Nina really on? Does she want to defect or is she doing all this for the cause? The Jennings have a tough mission to accomplish, and are dealing with a unbalanced associate. The acting, casting, directing, and several layers of sub-stories make Arpanet an interesting episode to watch. A must watch episode. Somewhere, somehow, something will give with the high level games played. Whatever goes off will be ugly and or violent! Stan is a ticking time bomb, and the Navy Seal is a wild card. I give Arpanet a six out of ten. There is quite the plot twist at the end.
