Something is missing
mjsreg11 July 2016
I have mixed feelings about this film.

The acting is good and the basis of the story is good. But the execution of bringing them together with technical aspects of film making lets it down and they just don't work together nicely in a smoothly coherent way.

There are lingering scenes which linger for no reason. They go on too long after the point has been made and don't really flow into the next scene too well.

I found at times there were some scene cuts that could have done with a little more visual explanation to flow - rather than abruptly jump from one concept to another.

This could have been a very good film if a bit more care had been taken in telling the story. I am sure it made sense in the crew's mind but they didn't relay it to the audience.

The acting was good - especially the two lead females.

Such a shame.

Chewing The Fat
shawnblackman30 September 2016
A horror film dealing with eating disorders and mental illness. This one has a young lady named Jill who has given up on life and has let herself go in every aspect. Never bothering to work or even wash she just hangs around the house cooking or eating. She gets the odd Skype call from her alcoholic mother who doesn't appear to have all her buttons. Jill stays with a roommate who is her exact opposite and works as a model. Jill hits her breaking point after a fight and chains up her roommate in the bathroom kicking the film into gear.

This film is like a food porn. Its repulsive for sure when you get the close ups of chewed food in someone's mouth or food all over there face and all over there clothes but that is what you get here. The director liked doing trippy sequences in vivid colour of Gummy Worms, cakes and Pop Tarts being chewed, smashed and spit out. The place where they lived has never been cleaned and you can just imagine the vileness. It was just a disgusting film and I liked it.

The music in this one is superb. The same dude that did Starry Eyes music did this one. The dream sequences were well shot as well. You might get perturbed with the ending but not too bad overall. If you don't get grossed out watching people eat with there mouths open all the time you'll be able to watch this one.

Reminded me of the novels of Michel Houellebecq
PimpinAinttEasy21 July 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Excess Flesh is about two roommates - one a mildly overweight woman with no self confidence and the other a beautiful and promiscuous woman, who feed off each other. The emptiness and cruelty of modern life underscored by an excessive concern about the way one looks and what one eats is one of the major themes of this film. I was reminded of this quote by Michel Housellebecq - "Sexuality is a system of social hierarchy" while watching Excess Flesh. Fans of Houellebecq's work and the Irvine Welsh novel Sex Lives of Siamese Twins might enjoy Excess Flesh, which is not really a horror film.

The director's style - lots of close ups to underscore the grotesque culture of gluttony grated on my nerves after a while. Most of the action takes place indoors because the overweight girl rarely leaves her apartment and the film is told from her point of view. The dramatic indoor scenes are interspersed with visuals of large city buildings and streets - I'm not sure what they were supposed to indicate. The performances were decent I guess. But frankly, I wouldn't recognize any of the actors if they turned up in another film.

Waste of Time
skylightdawn13 March 2016
It's too bad because from watching the preview it looked good. It's very misleading. Seems like they tried too hard to make an "artsy" movie (lots of unnecessary slow motion, close ups and over exaggerated noises). It's a shame because it could've been a really good psychological thriller. I can say that the actresses were somewhat good. Both were annoying and I believe that was their goal in this movie. The downside was, I didn't care about what happened to either of them. They never pulled me in enough to root for one or the other. If you are into slow burning thrillers that have a big time indie feel to them and fall short at the end, you may like this. To me it was a complete waste of time.

So miserable, gross and very boring
paul-ayres-6078412 September 2018
This has to rank as one of the worst movies I have ever seen. All of the characters are totally charmless and 30% of the movie revolves around people stuffing their faces with food.If you can sit through this until the end you have more stamina than me.

Shocking
kosmasp8 January 2021
For not the right reasons I might add. And I'm not talking about this being one of the few reviews of mine that have been deleted. As you can see though I'm not entire alone with my opinion on the movie. Still from the top I do think this has a more than fine idea and storyline. Apart from those who may not like movies "sprinkled" or filled entirely with social critisicm, they may have issues already with the movie. But everyone else may not just be intrigued by this.

And that is where I have to say that the movie fails. And it is not so much the grotesque and quite visceral/graphic nature of it all (though you should not be too squeamish about these things either). It is about how the story evolves and how it is edited together. Stretching the viewer patience to the point it'll break for most. Not to mention the incredible straining characters (actor choices/dialog) that you'll either endure to get to the "good parts" or just plain will be annoyed by it ... So well intended but very flawed to say the least

Could have been cool. Had many ways to go instead it just wanders into a wasteland of nothingness. Happens. The 2 lead actresses were good. Most everything else sucked.

Very weak
grantss25 March 2021
While clearly meant to be a horror-thriller this film had the potential to make profound statements about fame, jealousy, mental illness and eating disorders but instead just using them as props. It IS just a horror movie in the end, and even worse than most, which says a lot.

Pretty gross, but mostly entertaining.
PatrickPlantana6 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Few things gross me out to the point where I'm compelled to turn away from the screen, "Excess Flesh" thrived on this aspect of filmmaking. I can barely eat food in public, nonetheless watch emotionally disturbed women munch on my favorite late snacks zoomed in and shot in slow motion. The imagery and visuals can get a bit annoying and overdone, but maybe that is the director's aim in placing a psychological effect on the viewer. I feel like there is an overall point to this movie, but the dramatic scenes and chaotic ultra abuse kind of distort which direction I feel the movie is going in. It has a rather predictable twist and hits the emotions oddly with various traumas explored through extremes. Plenty of gross out sound effects and disturbing music scores only amplify the dysfunction of these wilder moments.

My main take on the movie as a whole is the exploration of eating disorders, low self esteem, narcissism, and the vicious cycle in general that physical and emotional abuse perpetuate from victim to victim. I enjoyed the performance of the main character, her level of crazy was pretty entertaining and I found her kind of hot at certain points in the film (but that's a conversation reserved for my therapist). I kept picturing her snappy emotions and aggressive/eratic behavior being played well as the portrayal of "Baby" in "The Devil's Rejects", not to take anything away from my future wife Sherri Moon... The roommate was a very easy to hate character and we can all relate to knowing a woman or two like her. Even when you feel like you should empathize with her, you really struggle to, or at least I did.

A decent film at best, due to the confusing scenes, over the top disgusting visuals, and an unoriginal twist. For something a little bit different, a lot a bit gross, and completely weird, it hits the spot, but don't think about the movie too hard or you'll probably be disappointed. Also, probably not the best choice for date night/movie night. Unless, you both met on the Dark Web.

Accurate but awkward
meghancmacivor7 October 2022
I think I'm other writers' hands this could be really good. The story is there and the metaphor is strong, but the script is garbage and awkward.

The filming style, while visceral and gross, is perfectly suited to the subject matter. Maybe having this be a horror movie pushed it too far out of the mainstream.

I can tell you from experience that this is an insanely accurate portrait of the realities of an eating disorder. I've seen just about every movie out there that deals with EDs and NONE have ever come as close as this to showing what it's really like. It very much is like having a second person inside you that you despise and that despises you right back. It's not glamorous, it's gross and sad and a hell of your own making.

I wish this was made by a more mainstream director etc because the message is important.

Looks like 90% of people missed the point of this one. (Spoiler Alert)
redmondson-812693 June 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Most reviewers have gotten it right as far as the acting and style on this movie, so I won't add much as far as that goes.

If you watch this one more than once, it should be obvious that the story is not about two roommates, but one woman struggling with body dysmorphia.

The character's name is Jill, but she looks like Jennifer. The Jennifer personality may have been her original personality, or it may have been created as a defense mechanism to hide all the feelings of confidence and self worth, while loading up the other personality with guilt, regret, and self loathing. This was created during or after her marriage to an emotionally abusive partner who, as it is depicted in the extremely twisted and weird reality sex show sequence, would constantly tell her how disgusting and unattractive she was. This created Jill. The personality that binge eats.

This is made clear through several key scenes. The two scenes where Jill and Jennifer are both in the presence of someone else (waking up with Rob, and on the curb with the police), Jennifer goes unnoticed and does not speak or even move. She is not acknowledged by anyone but Jill.

Then, in the scene where Jill opens her front door and the woman snaps cell phone photos of her, the photos are shown later to actually be photos of Jennifer. Despite that the woman's name is actually Jill, Jill is the one who does not exist in physical form. The appearance of Jill is a mental manifestation of her body dysmorphia.

Then finally in the last scene, when Jill injects the talent agent with that nasty Draino stuff she concocted, she leans over, and once again, you can see in the reflection that it's Jennifer.

Psycho-Eating Disorder Horror
in198422 March 2016
6.25 of 10. Are they roommates or just 2 versions of the same person happening within a psychotic aspiring model with a tendency to binge on eating, sex, and self abuse? Either way, you get 2 similar looking actresses, a slender model and a plump mess, playing the lead rolls.

As simply horror and gore, it doesn't pick up until the latter part of the film. The first half is essentially dedicated to setting up the characters and their/her various disorders/psychoses. That does set up a mystery angle to it and make the film more enjoyable and less predictable as to where it's going.

It's rare to get so much character depth, plot, gross-out scenes, horror, and hot ass shots in the same film. Worth a watch even though it makes a mistake at the end with not really completing the story and going with more of a setup for a sequel.

Excess Flesh: This is a cunning and complex film.
heartpurple5 April 2016
At first viewing, Excess Flesh is a story about an obsessed woman who imprisons her sexy roommate in a twisted attempt to bring them together -- a story of self-loathing, jealousy, love-hate, rage and, finally, about revenge and making right all things evil.

Ultimately, it's a scathing commentary on hyper-consumerism, where more is more and never enough. Excess Flesh is the state of the world through the lens of its empathic, embittered interpreter, Director, Patrick Kennelly. This is a world of consumerism, a world where one's identity is determined by what they wear, how they look, who they know and how they measure up to the cruel and impossible standards or abandon all hope. This work is both a seminal work and a masterwork – a view of a dysmorphic world through the piercing mind's eye of the film's creator.

This is not torture horror. This is a cunning complex film and the film reveals more and more the more you watch it. More is more. Consume. More.

The acting in this film is cult status. Bethany Orr's performance places her firmly in the ranks of Isabelle Adjani in Zulawski's classic "Possession." Orr's performance is not to be missed … nor is it to be misunderstood. Take time to indulge in this actor's revelations of character, nuance and the human condition. It is a visceral, infinite, and a deeply instinctive interpretation of one's loss of one's soul to the societal mediation of one's self.

Excess Flesh was a risk to make. Films like Excess Flesh are a risk for investors. Excess Flesh is a smartly produced hybrid genre film and the filmmakers deserve praise. Congrats to Exec Producer Dennis Garcia and Walking to the Moon Productions, for taking a chance on a film that needed to be made and for recognizing the talents of the filmmakers. You're a hero to indie filmmakers everywhere … Make more, please.

Excess Flesh is not for the weak of mind, heart, or soul. Take a look. Take your time and let happen. I recommend that you watch it more than once. Do it in excess.

WE NEED TO TALK
nogodnomasters26 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Jennifer (Mary Loveless) and Jill (Bethany Orr) are the odd couple. Jennifer is a model and Jill is 130 pound bulimic. Jill's mother suffers from substance abuse and Jill is clearly not wrapped too tight. Jennifer has gotten out of an abusive relationship and mistreats Jill. Jennifer pushes Jill until we reach the picture on the DVD cover.

We get a lot of close ups of the girls eating and smacking their lips, talking while eating, and spitting out their food. They rented the apartment with the chains in the wall, something that must be an option in LA.

I imagine this is supposed to me a story of two abused people who come to live together and make matters worse. I got bored watching them eat scene after scene after scene. More drama than thriller. It was like watching "Knock Knock" without the guy plus food.

Guide: F-word, sex, nudity (Bethany Orr, Mary Loveless)

A love letter to Los Angeles
Hal_Opinot-Pepper7 August 2016
This intimate look at the burgeoning relationship between two formerly platonic female friends is as much a warm love letter to the city of Los Angeles, seen through the lens of its delightful culinary traditions, as it is a tale is of finding love right where you least expect it — at home, in the kitchen... and the bedroom. From the opening, where roommate Jennifer awkwardly tries to compliment friend and roommate Jill ("You're not fat"), to the soulful kiss they openly share at the end, the evolution of these two reluctant partners' relationship as they fall inexorably into each others' arms is a heartwarming tale you'll remember at least though dinner.

Director Patrick Kineally, who has at least seen a music video, prods the story along like a pirate with a cutlass prodding you off the plank with amusing cut scenes featuring off-the- wall tertiary characters, like the nosy across-the-hall neighbor with her nonstop cavalcade of charmingly inappropriate, overdone gifts, or the handsome boyfriend with an apparent heart of gold who lives only to spread love as far and wide as he can.

The ultimate affect is a dizzying series of vignettes showcasing the growing connection of these two women, a tour-de-farce grounded in the the ingenious device of one's love of cooking without eating and the other's of eating without cooking, as it spins towards a glorious, triumphal act of love and conciliation as warm, beautiful, and crazy as the City of Angels itself.

Tear open a bag of Doritos and watch it with someone you love.

Well acted and unique story
thacker2729 October 2018
Good psychological and body horror with a slow build. The acting was great and the scenes were visually captivating. This movie isn't just psychological. With some of the scenes I felt like I could smell from the filth. Overall, good solid horror film.

Excellent original semi meta storyline. Great acting. Definitely terrifying and a "world" I don't ever wanna go back to. Highly impactful and interesting, but also horrifying.

love or hate
trashgang14 April 2016
I can immediately tell that this flick isn't for everybody because there's a bit of vomiting here and there and it moves slowly from a normal flick into a psychological flick towards a bit of horror towards the end.

It's all about being fat or being skinny. The fat one not being popular and is always eating things, fast food and unhealthy food. The skinny one is popular and can eat what she wants and is having sex all the time. Living together of course the fat one can't take it anymore and wants to become the skinny popular girl. Or is there more to watch. I can understand that it's all the same girl having problems with eating. Which one you are watching is up to you and will be revealed towards the end.

What some will have problems with is the use of a lot of slo-mo shots. And they always include eating going into the mouth or being spit out or vomiting. The horror towards the end does deliver here and there but for many I can tell it will all be too late because the first half of this flick it's about the characterisation. Not for everybody or every body...

Tough to watch, but worth it.
okpilak18 August 2023
Two roommates, Jill, who has a serious eating disorder and Jennifer, who may be a model, but whatever, she can eat anything and stay slim. Jill, on the other hand is a great cook, but seems to get little pleasure out of eating, and eats copious amounts of junk food, and shows bulimic behavior, and as a result their apartment is a pig sty. And Jill has an alcoholic mother, so no support system. One is watching people talk with their mouths open while eating, which really reinforces the impact of the eating disorder. This can be both disgusting and gross to many viewers. Jill doesn't go out much nor does she show any motivation to get a job. Jennifer picks up the tab. There was a man who showed interest in her, Rob, and she actually prepared a fantastic meal for him, but he didn't show. Reaching the halfway point of the movie, things take a turn to horror. Apparently LA apartments come with all the fittings necessary to chain a person to a wall, and Jill does that to Jennifer. But it is also worth pondering if Jennifer really exists, or is she Jill's alter ego? It is a powerful movie and disturbing on many levels. Jill sees herself as very obese, but that is not really the case. But slimness is the ideal advertisers have drilled into young women.
