Almost as good as Vacancy!
Patient44410 January 2016
To me, it was refreshing seeing a horror with a small budget acting far better than the latest productions. I got more intrigued with every minute so all in all, it was quite a pleasant surprise.

The story is typical, the execution is good, acting OK, and most of the time the decisions taken by the characters are natural, they don't seem to be written by someone. The bad guys did their job, our heroes the same and at the end of it you get your closure. For that I am thankful to Sweet Home.

If you give it a try and lower your expectations just a little, I'm sure most of you will appreciate this little movie cause it has quite a baggage to offer. I recommend it!

Cheers!

"All the windows are bricked up"
contessagunter28 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
All tension was lost after Ali told Simon all the windows were bricked up and they couldn't escape. None of the windows are bricked up. Not even the ground floor. There aren't even bars on the windows. Escape would have been very easy. I couldn't ignore that.

Could have been named Trapped
dopenamehere10 August 2016
I'm always on the look-out for a good horror flick and Sweet Home was a delightful treat.

I admit, at the scene in the beginning of the movie where the girl was speaking Spanish with the older gentleman,I stopped watching. I understand Spanish a little, but it seemed like the movie flipped to a foreign language altogether. At that point, I gave up. The next day I decided to continue the movie, simply because the movie is short in length(only 80 minutes). To my surprise, the Spanish dialogue was only a few minutes long and really didn't affect my viewing pleasure nor hinder my ability to follow the story.

I'm glad I decided to give it another try because it was honestly a pretty decent movie. Of course a few cliché moments in the film, but I've certainly seen worse. This film had me on the edge of my seat waiting to see what was going to happen next.

The movie moves along pretty quickly and has action throughout. I found myself thinking what would I do in this situation?

Although a fair amount of the reviews are negative, In my opinion, if you like horror/slasher films, check this one out! Honest rating 7/10.

"Sweet Home": Honey of a Thriller Soured by a Bland Ending
jtncsmistad2 January 2018
Sexy star Ingrid García Jonsson is that authentically rare Swedish/Spanish badass. Hell, let's be real. She's probably the ONLY one. Director/Co-Writer Rafa Martinez succeeds in slathering on the suspense.

These takeaways notwithstanding, where was the grand dénouement? Rarely has there been a more roundly disappointing conclusion to an otherwise mostly competent horror/thriller than we witness at the back end of "Sweet Home".

And adding to the disappointment, the 1970s pop radio hit "Eres Tu" is introduced at precisely the right moment during a critical climactic scene. But almost as soon as it starts the schmaltzy cum sincere song suddenly vanishes. We DEMAND more MOCEDADES!

With this in mind, I offer a respectfully resolute, and most appropriate, message to the well meaning but ultimately off the mark filmmakers behind "Sweet Home". It's not us.

"It is You".

Not the greatest, not the worst
deloudelouvain26 September 2016
To me Sweet Home deserves a bit more then it's actual ratings. Okay it's not the greatest movie ever but it's worth watching once. There are a couple good horror parts, the filming and sound also contributes to make it an okay horror movie. Maybe the story might not be the most original and sometimes you wonder why they don't make other more logic decisions to get out of the building they're trapped in but with most cat and mouse horror movies you rarely have any logic. The mixture of Spanish and English was fine for me. I don't mind reading subtitles so it wasn't an issue for me. Ingrid García Jonsson and Bruno Sevilla are the two major actors in Sweet Home and they did a good job. Are there better movies in this genre? For sure, but it was still worth a watch.

Horrible Movie
torunoden6 August 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Such a disastrous waste of time you will be so regretful to have even started watching this movie. So many cringe worthy moments with the actors decision making as well as their acting itself. The director made horrible choices that could have been noticed even by a five year old. By the end of the movie you will feel disappointed and worst of all terrible as a person because you will undoubtedly be secretly hoping the main character dies one because she deserves it and two so the it will just be over already. Also did anyone notice the guy dies on his birthday worst girlfriend ever... By far worst movie I have ever watched. Don't waste your time watching this awful movie.

made with love to the genre
trashgang23 January 2017
After seen Don't Breathe (2016) my best friend told me to pick up this flick. So I did and I'm happy I did because it's a hell of a ride. It's not all that good, it's not that you think, aaa it's all over now and things start over again.

Here you could see it coming so no suspense on that part but it's the effects used and the brutality that makes it worth watching. It do involves a bit of romance and in some parts the romance takes over but there's a thing, just before you think, omg, not the romance again you're in for a smasher.

For a first attempt as a full feature Rafa Martinez did well. The story itself is a bit over the top. Nothing is explained and so this can go from a romance into a home invasion towards a slasher. For me all things were done with a wink towards black comedy. Just see the beginning, the old lady going to the shower, guess everybody said, noooooo nudity here please. Well done. But what it adds toward the story I don't know and as mentioned before the romance and the head (you will see) is black comedy too.

Don't get me wrong, no humor at all, pure horror.

What a waste of time. The main characters make one moronic decision after the next. Whoever gave this movie anything above 5 stars must have worked on the movie. Please don't waste your time with this garbage.

Watch it for Violence and Scare
dashingmusic6 September 2015
Actually the only problem i had with this movie was the different language that is used. The production used Spanish and English. I'd rather its in Spanish and i read off the subtitles. Casting of the actress was not the best of choice as her accent was too thick when she speaks English . Other than screaming, which she is best, her acting for other scenes did not have the depth nor expressed too well. Violence and all .. is worth a watch though. Plenty of scary moments. It really did remind me of REC, where everything happens in a building. Quite a good choice if you are picking a movie for your halloween get together with friends. Lastly, the ratings could've scored better(current 4.7)

Cheap and unwise
kosmasp25 October 2015
That's regarding a character decision very early on in the movie, which is actually one thing that you will immediately pick up when the movie starts. You could say it lays out the work of what is going to happen later on. And while that is not really in favor of the movie and the movie itself takes awhile to actually jump-start, when it does (late), it actually is more than decent.

Let's say the bad guy in this, really deserves that tag. And you could do more with this idea/character. The ending is pretty strong, though whatever direction they'd go, someone would be annoyed by it either way. I thought it was the right way to go ... no pun intended

A Spanish horror as bland as a paella without any spices.
peterp-450-29871626 April 2016
A Spanish horror / slasher / thriller about the phenomenon of forcibly removing elderly people out of their homes by criminal real estate agents, who'll use that space to build luxurious apartments. That's what you'll read at the beginning of the film. Strange but true, the used language during the entire film is English (apart from a few harsh Spanish swear words). For once, I wished it was Spanish. Not only because I find Spanish a delicious sounding language but also because it would benefit the authenticity of this film. What really terrifies me is the fact that these evictions really happen there. Apparently there were more than 46,000 evictions in 2012. That's more than 500 a day. Terrible! I don't know if they use the same technique as in "Sweet Home". I hope not, of course.

Ultimately it's just a stupid movie. Full of stupid decisions, stupid coincidences and probably the dumbest Spanish girl you can find in that sunny country. She's one of those girls who drops her cell phone or flashlight at the most crucial moments of course (I'm forcing myself not to start about her being blond). I'm aware that these kind of incidents always occur in this type of movie. But every time I'm annoyed by it and I start to say things like "Oh come on" and "Not again, stupid cow". And also, this is the strangest building ever. It fitted the mood and was ideal as a background and setting for this movie. But still I thought there was something weird about it. It's an old, dilapidated building and most residents already left (voluntarily or horizontally with their feet first). But those rotten doors seem to be soundproof. Apparently no one on the first floor could hear the rattling with the front door and the loud shouting through the mailbox. And when help arrived (in the form of El Liquidador. Nice chilling name) who took care of the victims by using some kind of chemical substance in order to reduce them to dust material and vacuum it away, they were having a friendly conversation on the other side of the hall door. Strange architecture over there in Spain.

The most annoying thing in this film, is the story on its own. I expected more. I was just looking at the screen sheepishly and patiently I waited to see how it would end. That's it. It's far from being exciting. Besides two bloody scenes, there's not much blood to see on the screen. Only when El Liquidado arrives, it gets a bit more exciting. For a short while that is. He's some kind of ultimate solution to straighten out a situation that got out of hand. But haven't we seen this before? Such a rugged, muscular guy who routinely does the dirty work. Usually such a person is moving forward in such a nerve-racking slow pace, while dragging along a huge ax. That's nothing new under the sun. Before you know it, you get a cat and mouse game. And most of the time you can easily guess the outcome. Except in this film. But what was this "Saw" -like end? It was as if I suddenly watched a complete different movie.

Isn't there anything positive to report? Yes of course there is. The location where the whole story takes place looks absolutely stunning (as said before). A gorgeous old building ideal to play hide and seek. A unique and scary place perfect to film a struggle to the death. The camera angles used by the director were sometimes impressive. For instance the excerpts while the rain is pouring down. Or those images of the staircase. Simply gorgeous. But otherwise it was just as bland as a paella without any spices. Everyone dreams of buying a Spanish hacienda at an older age and enjoy the Spanish sun. After seeing this film, I wisely decided to accept the bad, cold weather of Belgium.

This Spanish Paella needs some chorizo!
omendata16 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I have recently been watching a lot of Spanish series and movies and they never disappoint "30 Monedas" to name but one but sadly this effort is just a bit mediocre and nothing new to add to the genre and reminds me of the excellent Rec but without the effectiveness and bite that it had.

A nice bit of gore or two but as another reviewer has already said, a bit like Paella without any spice! The boyfriend was equally tame and annoying so you were glad to see him squashed like a bug when you should be rooting for the survivors!

The ending was also a bit of a let down; I was expecting her to throw the liquid nitrogen over his head, then give him a "Ronaldo Roundhouse" and kick his head off - Now that is what I would have called a goal and a half ending but no we got your basic axe in the head - Lame and tame like a lot of movies these days - just no imagination!

4 Hatchets to the head on this one!

Violent crime tale in which a couple becomes involved in a battle against nasty murderers
ma-cortes7 April 2021
Thrilling movie with sudden bursts of violence , set in Madrid where a young real state broker : Ingrid Garcia Jonsson plans a secret meeting with her boyfriend : Bruno Sevilla, and both of whom are about to face the worst night of their lives when some burglars trespass into the home . But things don't go as they planned . As things go awry when the group of violent killers appearing at the building are surprised by the distressed couple , and they then are attempting to murder them. Tension and fear take over them all , while the pursuers go after the deranged pursued couple in a relentless chase . Later on, there shows up a liquidator causing wreak havoc and destruction.

Thrilling and scary film about an extremely violent invasion home, what follows is a merciless deadly game of a cat-and-mouse resulting in unexpected consequences. Lots of action, violence, blood and gory scenes , but it's all fairly routine , though being well made . The movie packs a claustrophobic atmosphere , hair-rising frames and surprising scenes . The violent story belongs to " Home Invasion" sub-genre , being shot in the wake of "Michael Hanake's Funny Games" , "Miguel Angel Vivas' Secuestrados" , "Walter Hill's Trespass" , "Joel Schumacher's Trespass" , and "Enric Alberich's Transgression" , in all of them some nasty invaders enter violently at a house causing mayhem and chaos against unfortunate victims . This Sweet Homme 2015 is mostly played by two main stars : Ingrid Garcia Jonsson and Bruno Sevilla giving decent interpretations. Accompanied by an unknown support cast playing the sadistic invaders.

The motion picture was professionally made by Rafa Martinez, though with no much originality, displaying the usual issue about the Axe Killer carrying out a criminal spree. Being this one his first movie, though previously directed Shorts as "Halloween Before Christmas" and "Zombies and cicarettes". Rating : 6.5/10. The film will appeal to thriller/terror enthusiasts. Well worth watching .

Most pathetic man you've ever seen
Der_Schnibbler21 October 2017
Completely unrealistic reactions from the pathetic imbecile that plays the male lead. Bad acting all around. It could have been a good story, even with a low budget, but they absolutely ruined it. The violence and suspense does not make up for it when you have to roll your eyes repeatedly as you ask for a break from the stupidity.

Also, someone should have told the composer to chill out. The score is over-excited and intrusive. Too bad they couldn't have put half his effort into the script.

Worth a watch
ant36au21 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is definitely more of a thriller than a horror, but what a thrill it was to watch. The story was tight, for the most part, and the acting from the Swedish female lead,Ingrid García Jonsson,is more than respectable, unfortunately I can't say the same for Bruno Sevilla, who plays her boyfriend Simon,I just felt that he was simply walking through the part and his heart wasn't in it.The main bad guy, Oriol Tarrida Homedes, never said a word which made his character all the more sinister. There were a couple of cliché moments, but not many and if you let those get to you,you lead a pretty sad life.Cinematography was brilliant, dark and very clever. All in all this is a movie I will be more than happy to give a second watch, just so I can catch any moments I may have missed on the first.

Worth watching. Taut, entertaining thriller with some good scares.
Entertainment-Buff3 September 2017
Not the greatest thriller I have ever watched, but neither is it the worst. It held my attention throughout.

Strong, athletic female lead. Nice to see that instead of a woman depicted as a meek, trembling weakling, completely dependent upon a man for protection.

The viewer may have to look away during some gruesome, violent scenes. Well made film, worth a look.

Poor man's Panic Room
searchanddestroy-116 November 2021
That's the first thing that I thought about after thirty minutes of this domestic chiller, not so much in the Spnish style, but very fashion in today standards, if yu compare with the other features made since two decades now. New couple arriving in a new apartment, you could open a DVD library only with this topic. This is not a bad home invasion movie though, not at all, but don't expect forgetting PANIC ROOM after watching this one.

A real gem.
simone_haritos21 August 2016
I've been using IMDb to choose what movies I watch for a few years by now. I've seen my share of horror films but not once have I ever felt compelled to write a review. Awesome movie! Decent acting with a great plot that's packed full of suspense. I gave it a 10 because in my opinion that's the rating this movie truly deserves. It has been a very long while since I've had an opportunity to watch a really good thriller/scary/horror movie and this one didn't disappoint. Don't allow the little bit of Spanish spoken in the film turn you off because there isn't very much. I loved it. If you're into horror, don't hesitate. This is definitely a must see!

WHAT'S YOUR LOCATION?
nogodnomasters1 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The film opens with a killer on Christmas Eve of an elderly woman in an old apartment building in Barcelona. Months later Alicia (Ingrid García Jonsson) inspects the nearly abandoned building for a real estate company. She uses the building as a secret rendezvous for her boyfriend Simon's (Bruno Sevilla) birthday. He is English and is in the medical profession, needing to go back to school. While they are there...not to give too much away, but there is another break-in like the first and Alicia and Simon star in a "home" break-in film of hide and seek. Oriol Tarrida Homedes plays the bad guy who wears all black, has oversize ominous boots, wears a respirator (I don't know why) and drags the large cliche axe. There is apparently some confusion in Spain about which slasher characters belong where. Nothing new to see here.

Guide F-bomb. No sex. Ingrid García Jonsson in black bra and panties.

Meh....
Foutainoflife15 November 2018
This was just ok for me. It's been done before with only the characters and the locations being changed. It was filmed pretty good and there was a real attempt to keep suspense consistent. The actors were decent and while the storyline could have used a little work, it wasn't off putting. All in all it was a decent watch.

Better than expected, (PLUS Star Wars references?)
brendandelaney14 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
First off, this is an entertaining film to watch if you like a good suspenseful/violence laden tale that moves along at a swift enough pace to actually keep you interested! Only an hour and 20 minutes long but it seemed even shorter by the way that it never bored you and kept the action going up until the very end.... Also, I CAN'T be the only one who saw multiple Star Wars like "coincidences" if not actual references, that once noticed seemed to pile up one after another, until "Princess Leia kills Jabba the Hutt" by choking him with a chain! Starting with the Darth Vader like presence's entrance, I noticed a scene reminiscent of the "trash compactor" scene, followed by amongst others, the presence of 2 different colored light sabers! I am anxiously waiting comments that either agree or say that I'm reaching which I may have ended up doing but it was alltogether unplanned and just something that I happened to notice!

Dark
baunacholi-8615919 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Sweet home manages quite well to build up tension - and keeps it pretty much throughout the whole running time. Right from the get go it's clear what to expect. The shower scene for example, is effective, simple and even though u might a anticipate what's next - it grips u. A moody, bleak and suspenseful version of the home invasion genre. Even the decisions taken by the couple are reasonable and more realistic then in similar flicks. Only the very last chapter felt a bit misplaced - not bad and ultimately an appropriate closure - but it had a different vibe in my pov. All in all, an above average thriller with some nasty scenes and a dark and uneasy atmosphere.

Excellent, Suspenseful Thriller!
The plot was surprisingly imaginative with a nice helping of gore. The acting was above average, and the protagonist was very talented. The cinematography was excellent! This film was taut, and the end was satisfying! Give it a look. You won't be disapointed!
