Sex & Nudity

  • A mother is seen putting batteries into a dildo while her son plays downstairs with his band. It is implied that she will be masturbating while her son's band is drown outs the sound.
  • An older brother asks his 15-year-old brother if he wants have "sexual intercourse" with a 16-year-old girl. He confirms that he does.
  • A piece of graffiti in the background reads "I rode your ma!" in one scene.
  • A teenage girl tells a teenage boy that her boyfriend just wanted to "ride" her.
  • A twenty-something man tells a teenage boy how he used to "ride" lots of girls.
  • A man tells his brother that their parents only got married so they could have sex.
  • A man mentions that the Christian Brothers school is full of "rapist bullies."
  • A teenage character says "Suck my balls" in one scene.

Violence & Gore

  • A school bully holds a slingshot up to another student's face and tells him to take off his trousers. The other student refuses, and the bully leaves.
  • A bully punches another student in the face and steals the his food. The boy who was punched is seen with two black eyes for the next ten minutes of the film.
  • A Christian Brother pulls a student by the head into the bathroom, where he proceed to stick the student's head under a sink, and wash his make-up off. Afterwards, he pushes the student onto the ground.
  • In a fantasy sequence, that is a homage to Rebel Without A Cause, a man takes out a pocket knife and circles around another man with it.
  • A potentially violent confrontation is resolved by words.
  • It is implied that a drunken father beats his wife and son.
  • A girl is seen with a bruise on her cheek. She says that it came from her boyfriend, and that she "deserved it."
  • A father smacks his son over the head.
  • Two schoolboys are scene fighting while a crowd watches. One boy headbutts the other.

Profanity

  • Two scenes of people giving middle fingers.
  • A teenage says "Suck my balls" at one point.
  • Some homophobic terms like "queer" and "faggot", mostly used within the context of bullying.
  • A use of incidental coarse language of "cunt" heard in the background.
  • There is a single utterance of the expletive 'fucking' by a man in a moment of frustration in the film.
  • There is also some mild language voiced in the film such as 'what the hell' and 'bullshit.'

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • It's mentioned that one teenager's parents are drug addicts.
  • It's said that one character's father is in a rehab facility for alcohol addiction.
  • A priest is seen taking a swig from a whiskey flask while teaching an unruly class.
  • The lead characters older brother is seen smoking and rolling joints frequently throughout the film. This is neither showed in a good or bad light and isn't shown in any graphic detail as the film is only PG-13.
  • Various teenage characters, ranging from fifteen to sixteen, smoke throughout the film.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • During the bullying montage, a character farts on another's face crudly.
  • This film is a musical drama set in 1980s Ireland, in which a teenager forms a band to court the girl he had fallen for.

  • The protagonist's mother is having an affair. There are lots of accusations of his mother having sex with the other person.
  • A teenage girl makes reference to being molested by her father. Very brief and vague.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • One character smokes cannabis throughout the film. He later tells his brother that he hasn't smoked "hash" in two days and is having withdrawals. He's later seen smoking it again.
