Warning: Spoilers
Brilliantly written and directed by Carlo Carlei (FLIGHT OF THE INNOCENT, FLUKE, ROMEO & JULIET), this suspenseful and highly emotional miniseries is crafted with a visual quality that doesn't pale in comparison with the most successful U.S. cable series praised today by audiences all over the world. Italian superstar Luca Zingaretti (of MONTALBANO's fame) shines as a washed out judge from Calabria who finds the courage to fight back the Mafia's Young Turks after they murder his best friend. Benefitting from the unexpected advice of Don Mico Rota (a great Maurizio Marchetti), an old godfather who's been rotting in jail for years, the prosecutor puts together all the pieces of a puzzle that leads him to discover one surprising truth after another. In the heart of Mafialand you can trust no one and even your closest friends can become your worst enemies. Beautifully shot on location in Reggio Calabria and Messina, THE INDOLENT JUDGE is by large the best Italian miniseries since Carlei's own PADRE PIO: MIRACLE MAN (2000). Hail to public broadcaster RAI's courage to produce such bold and brave material and to all the people involved, especially newcomer Giovanni Rotondo, who crafted a score really worth to be remembered.
