Powerful messages, stunning cinematography and authentic performances – 2014 was a good year for independent (indie) cinema. Here is a list of some of our favourites which are worth catching if you missed them.
Ilai (Leaf)
Director Rajiv Reddy’s film traced the journey of a young homeless girl in India, Chennai. Ilai was a good exploration of human emotion, survival and regeneration. The performances were outstanding and natural. Profoundly, the protagonist returns to the same place that she had started off at at the beginning of the film; however, this time she sees the world with different eyes. The film highlights how experiences impact the human soul. We saw this at the London Indian Film Festival and our reviewer wrote, “At times, the cinematography will have you spell bound. Artistic shots of the sun and the streets make this film a visual treat: for instance, a particular shot of the heat...

Imagine a man with a bandaged face walking the streets of Pakistan.
He has a gun.
He isn’t shy to kill.
He kills – Cold murder in broad daylight.
He hands himself into the police – only to not be taken seriously and told to take a hike.
Is this the state of the world we live in? Where people are getting away with murder in different shapes and forms, and where the truth has little value? Why is he bandaged when he admits his crime? Is he an everyman figure?
This is our introduction to Anima State. Directed by independent film maker Hammad Khan, Anima State will make you shift in your seat – not necessarily uncomfortably, but confusingly. Hammad Khan is bold to make a film stepping away from the conventional mark and to dives deeply into the bizarreness of the human (sub) conscious. Questions provoked: how do we tackle...

Every country, every civilization, and every culture deals with its own set of crises of faith, crises of identity, and the clash between reactionaries and radicals. Pakistan's struggles are no different, although what exactly those struggles are will change depending upon who you ask. The establishment seeks to concentrate power among its elites and to solidify the nation's religious Muslim identity. The younger generation, the Slackistanis, are trying to use their new tools to connect to the rest of the world in a secular way. Both sets of Pakistanis are having their own pains, largely to do with one another. Hammad Khan's Anima State takes this cognitive dissonance and turns it into a guided visual essay through Pakistan's past, present, and future, and the end...

One of my favorite film festivals has unveiled their 2014 lineup and it looks like a good one. We've been covering Liff for the last couple of years and every year they come up with some great features, and this year there are a couple of films that I've had the chance to see already and a few that I'm very eager to check out. Standouts in the list are Sulemani Keeda (Writers), which is a comedy about a pair of screenwriters trying to break into the big time, and Pakistani entry, Anima State by Hammad Khan, an avant garde look at the current state of his country of origin. Those are far from the only interesting titles, though. Also worth noting is the UK Premiere of...
