Although the title suggests vampires or cannibals or something like this, this short film doesn't really go anywhere quite as obvious – which is a good thing, but not to say that what it does is something brilliant. The plot sees a young tourist coming back with a girl to find that she not only has a boyfriend, but that he is sitting at his desk in their room while she continues to seduce the tourist. Unsure how to feel about any of this, the tourist watches on.
There is a lot of build up, and in particular I guess the underwear clad Piasko will be more than enough to hold the attention, along with the hints that there is a bigger picture that we do not understand. This kept me interested, although at the same time it did seem to be heading to an obvious space, so I wasn't gripped by it. In the end the film twists to be that the boyfriend kisses the tourist, which took me by surprise but then left me wondering "why". As an ending it was only effective because it was unexpected and sudden, but for no other reason. Was the film suggesting that the homosexual encounter would be forced, or punishment, or some sort of vendetta against tourists (all suggested by the language and place), if so then why? Or was it just a game played by the couple on tourists for their own amusement?
Answers are not really forthcoming and as a result what we get are a tease of build-up, but a conclusion that only leaves the question "why?" – and as this applies to the ending, it also started to apply to the whole film as I wondered what the point of it was. It is reasonably well made, albeit without the sharpest lighting, cinematography or acting, but without anywhere to go the slightly exploitative build- up just seems a bit hollow. I guess very few short film are looking for an audience reaction of "what was the point of that", but it is likely that this will be the majority reaction here.
