Vengeance of nightmares
TheLittleSongbird11 August 2018
The cover/poster was very unnerving and the advertising likewise. Really liked the concept too, not an original one perhaps but it sounded really intriguing and was already admiring it tackling a heavy and daring theme that resonated with me, having been badly bullied myself. All those things were enough to make want to see it.

'Some Kind of Hate' turned out not to be a great film, there are issues here. But for a low-budget horror recent viewing as part of one of my many quests recently, 'Some Kind of Hate' is easily up there with the few ones that was actually decent. When it comes to the reviews, can see both sides, found it to be a film with obvious strengths but also one that is easy to find fault with. Am one of those whose feelings are mutual, but admired what it set out to do, it doesn't waste its idea and its tackling of the theme was brave.

Lets start with the good things. 'Some Kind of Hate' looks good, there is a sense of dark unsettlement, some very creepy gore and make-up, the editing was at least cohesive and the photography not trying to do too much but having enough to stop it being static. The music is suitably ominous and there is tension, creepiness and suspense when the film gets going. The second half is very unnerving and boasts some well-timed and inventive kills.

The acting is much better than average, with the standout performances coming from Grace Phipps and especially Sierra McCormick, the latter being both frightening and poignant. Did find myself identifying with Lincoln, having been a bully victim and being introverted, though Moira is more interesting and should have had the bigger focus. Was at least engaged for much of the duration, had no trouble understanding what was going on, was emotionally invested and at no point was my intelligence insulted.

As aforementioned, there are drawbacks too. The first third is a bit slow and ordinary, it could have gotten to the point quicker and had less of the slightly dull setting up. The script is quite a big weakness, it is not always easy to take it seriously, there is some awkwardness and cheese and it could have been tighter.

It is agreed that some of the film does get silly, didn't buy some of the victims/bullies' reactions before their fates, no sense of genuine fright and with a too "trying to make conversation at a reunion" chemistry, that does undermine the build up somewhat. The sound quality is not always well balanced with it tending to favour the music. Would have liked more development to the characters, only Lincoln and Moira are developed quite well while the others are fairly sketchy despite the film doing a good job making one hate them.

All in all, better than expected though not without things to criticise. 6/10 Bethany Cox

A bloody tale of bullying & revenge
Stevieboy66611 December 2017
Lincoln, a bullied rock kid, is sent out to a reform school out in the desert after sticking a fork in the face of one of his tormentors. Unfortunately the bullying starts all over again, however the spirit of a bullied dead girl called Moira just happens to be on hand to carry out bloody revenge on his new tormentors, often by razor blade. Quite an interesting idea. Can't help but feel sorry for this guy, though he does find comfort in the arms of a beautiful girl. Some fairly good gore to be seen, acting and production values both reasonable. Look out for a short mid-credits scene. Pretty average overall.

Not perfect by a long-shot but I've seen a lot worse horrors
Seth_Rogue_One20 January 2016
The first 30 minutes are really solid, which is more like a psychological drama-thriller than anything else.

But on the 30 minute mark that changes and it throws a supernatural twist on you which feels really random and took me out of the movie for a bit, but once I accepted that this is what the movie is like now I slowly but safely started getting into it again.

And even though the movie most certainly is not without it's flaws I must say that this wasn't too bad of a watch, even though it's nothing spectacular but yeah I've seen hundreds of horrors that are a lot worse than this for sure... Seen hundreds that are better as well but that's beyond the point lol.

And the acting is pretty good, and the gore is excellent, one complaint would be that occasionally the cast speak really low and it's hard to hear over the dark melodies being played in the background but overall not too shabby, better than I expected considering the rating of (currently) 4.6/10 for sure.

5.5/10 from me, or rounded up to a 6.

Revengeful Spirit
claudio_carvalho3 September 2016
Warning: Spoilers
The teenager Lincoln Taggert (Ronen Rubinstein) is frequently bullied at school by a mate. One day, Lincoln reacts and sticks a fork into the face of the bully. Lincoln is sent to a reform school and the intern Willie (Maestro Harrell) bullies him with his gang. One day, Lincoln accidentally summons the spirit of Moira (Sierra McCormick), a bullied teenage girl that died a couple of years ago. Now she takes vengeance initially on the bullies and then she kills everyone that crosses her path.

"Some Kind of Hate" is a slasher with a promising beginning with a good story of bullying. The viewer feels sorrow for the teenager Lincoln, under stress at home, at school and at the reform school. Then Moira destroys his enemy at the reform school. However, in a certain moment on, the story turns in a brutal and quite senseless slasher. My vote is five.

Bullies I hate you!
niunoniotro23 March 2024
Some Kind os Hate is a clear example of I want to and I can't. An example of I have the idea but either I lack the resources and/or talent to carry it out in a worthy way. It is an example of good script, weak casting (although it doesn't help that I have seen it in such a poor Spanish dubbed version) and a direction that stays between two waters, those of the mystery and those of the slasher without getting clear at any time, making the plot insipid and drowning in that sea of doubts.

The bullying theme is not taken too seriously when it should be its main weapon.

The good: The short length and some bloody scenes.

The bad: It's forgotten as soon as it's over.

Quite an apt title...
wrightiswright30 September 2015
30th September 2015.

Mark this date in your calendar fans... For it's a historic occasion indeed.

For this is the day... I officially stop wasting my life taking chances on movies that may or may not be buckets of s***e...

And, stick to the classics.

(Okay, I'll be able to watch the odd dire obscurity... I do SO enjoy mocking them, you know. But really, life is too short to do that a lot...)

And, what of the flick that provoked this sudden change in policy?

Well I liked precisely three things in it: 1. The girl ghostie's razor blade necklace. 2. A cool throat slashing murder scene. 3. A lady getting her brains blown out.

That's it, folks. The rest is just tiresome nonsense about the most lax 'reform' wilderness school in the world, where apparently the criminals are free to have sex all day, smoke and beat each other up. Not surprising... Considering there's only three staff for an entire squadron of ruffians.

Oh, I forgot... They have their phones taken away...

...Which are easily retrieved later by our goth hero by simply going into an office and rummaging around in a cardboard box.

Not exactly boot camp, then...

Is it really worth me bemoaning the non-dimensional characters, the inexplicable behaviour they display throughout and the total absence of anything approaching enjoyment here?

No, it isn't.

I'll simply label it as 'GARBAGE' and move on with my life.

Simple, really.

Ciao. 2/10

Some Kind of Silly, really
Robosharp22 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I kinda just had to write a review on this film after viewing it, mainly because I found certain elements to it, to be some what ridiculous.

The story begins with Lincoln, a teenager/young man who is subjected to what can only be described as physical assault type bulling by a bully whilst at high school. During the assault, Lincoln fights back by stabbing the bully in the cheek with a blade. This is the only occurrence we see of his high school bulling, so we don't get a feel of anything leading up to this event. I would also like to point out that Lincoln is a very tall and handsome guy, not somebody you would expect to be a victim of bulling.

Anyway due to the injury Lincoln caused to the bully he is sent to this holiday camp\reform school where apparently the hottest chicks on the planet reside. I mean if this is where you get sent when involved in a violent assault, no wonder America has such high crime rates! The bad part to the camp for Lincoln is that it also hosts some guys, some of whom take an instant unjustified disliking to him, and immediately unleash some more physical bulling on him. Again this bulling does not make sense, there is no build up to it, no period of feuding or resentment - just hello, we don't like you, Bang! Smack! Wallop!

Lincoln has a few encounters with these bullies, but I never really feel sorry for him. Mainly because he is handsome, has a fairly bad attitude and very quickly obtains the hottest of the hot chicks as his girlfriend - trust me you would take a few blows to be with her. Again this is not the typical exploits of a victim of bulling.

After his most violent encounter with the bullies, Lincoln finds a quiet spot to himself in a shed where he voices his anger towards the bullies and what he would like to do to them. This accidentally summons the spirit of a girl called Moira, who was bullied to death by some of the occupants of the camp a couple of years back. Moira tells Lincoln that she will rid of his tormentors to gain some vengeance for her own demise. Against Lincoln's wishes, that is exactly what she does. Oh yeah and guess what, Moira is also a hot chick (though admittedly still bears her death injuries whilst in spirit form).

So that basically some's up the rest of the plot to the film, however once Moira kills Lincoln's bullies (Moira kills by inflicting injuries on herself which subsequently inflicts them on her victims), she then just goes on a rampage and kills anybody she encounters - Which also feels a bit silly as her original 'back from the dead' cause was all about avenging bullies but quickly descends into psychopathic-spree-killer-spirit.

In the mean time Lincoln and his hot girlfriend Kaitlin of course try to stop Moira, though Kaitlin does at one point form a bizarre alliance with Moira where she voluntarily gets the malevolent spirit to injure her??

Speaking of Kaitlin, a pretty girl, with a seemingly nice nature - Reveals to Lincoln that she had previously bullied an x friend to the point of suicide, which is why she ended up in reform. Erm, she really does't come across as somebody that would do that. -silly-

Another gripe of mine is how everybody reacts when approached by the ghost of Moira. These people knew her and know she is dead, and don't appear to be at all shocked when the blood drenched murderous entity walks up to them. Rather than fainting or running for the hills they just engage in conversation with her - SILLY!-

Moira by the way is not particularly scary, she is more just an adolescent vengeful brat.

The ending to the film could disappoint, but may also satisfy as is fairly unexpected.

This it is not a terrible film - it has positives, there is some slick direction at times, good lighting and camera work, great effects for the gore, mostly decent performances. Sadly this is over ruled by the silliness and at times laughable script. The fact that many of the reviews on this site have not also commented on the silly aspects to the film, well that gives me...hmmmm, well, well some kind of hate!

Some Kind of Hate..For Other Reviewers
roguecritic4211 January 2016
It sickens me to see how poorly people rate horror movies these days. I once belonged to a group of horror movie fans, but now I am alone.

Don't get me wrong. I hate B-movies. I hate the majority of Redbox horror movies that most people have not heard of. But this movie is truly something good and special, and to see it thrown in the gutter by people who I would have trusted as my horror loving peers, has disappointed me.

I remember seeing "It follows" a couple years back and I thought it rocked. It was a throw back to 80s horror that I really appreciated it. So I did some google searches looking for the next "It Follows". That is when I came across my first internet review of Some Kind of Hate.

When I watched it, I was not disappointed. I guess you could call this film a cult horror classic, since it is apparent from other reviews, that a very unique clique of people will appreciate this film for what it offers.

From storyline, to acting, to environment, to just the feel and soundtrack and nature of the film, I really enjoyed it. If I was looking at these IMDb reviews, I would never have given it a chance.

The plot and dialogue is simple, but interesting. One of the main characters is victim is extreme bullying. Karma takes spiritual form and comes back with a vengeance. It's not filled with the gore and special effects throughout the movie you might see in most horror movies that make it to the big screen, but its got story and heart. For the record, I would give it 1 star less than It Follows. But this still is a good movie, worthy of re-watching over the years.

Kind of felt like a Disney Star reunion
Edhager7712 December 2015
I didn't think this was a horrible movie, but I could feel that this was an attempt for some of the Disney stars try to break away from their previous "goody goody" roles that they are well known for. I can say that at least the acting was much better here than it was there. It is interesting to me to see what direction these guys go in order to escape from the company. I'm interested in seeing what the future holds for them. I just hope they do not go crazy as we have seen in the past. Otherwise, the movie to me seemed alright, albeit a little slow paced. There could have been more character development in the protagonist. I also felt the "cheerleader" wasn't really believable. I don't see a person like that trying to see what it is like to be the victim. When we first meet her, she is hugging up to a bully, yet she says she hates them. Does anyone else see a problem with this?

Nifty indie horror outing
Woodyanders16 December 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Maladjusted adolescent misfit Lincoln Taggert (a solid and sympathetic performance by Ronen Rubinstein) gets sent to a remote school for troubled kids. After Lincoln finds himself being mercilessly tormented by a group of mean bullies, he inadvertently conjures up the lethal spirit of fellow deceased bully victim Moira (well played with frightening intensity by Sierra McCormick), who embarks on a ferocious vengeful spree.

Director Adam Egypt Mortimer, who also co-wrote the dark script with Brian DeLeeuw, presents an interesting array of credibly messed-up teen characters, makes nice use of the desolate desert locations, generates a good deal of tension, maintains an appropriately bleak'n'brooding atmosphere throughout, astutely nails a strong sense of adolescent angst and anger, and delivers a generous amount of nasty gore. The sound acting by the capable cast keeps this movie humming, with especially stand-out work from Grace Phipps as the sultry and spunky, yet spiteful Kaitlin, Spencer Breslin as loyal friend Derek, Maestro Harrell as the antagonistic Willie, and Michael Polish as ineffectual camp supervisor Jack Iverson. The uncompromisingly grim ending packs a devastating punch. The filmmakers warrant extra praise for depicting the severe emotional and psychological damage wrought by bullying in an unflinchingly stark and brutal manner. Kudos are also in order for Robert Allare's moody score and Benji Bakshi's crisp widescreen cinematography. A worthy scarefest.

A not half bad B horror
s327616928 September 2015
Some Kind of Hate is a not half bad B horror.

The premise is not that novel but different enough to be interesting. I suspect this titles primary audience is late teens and twenty somethings. Those who are fresh enough from school to still remember how horrible and cruel other teens can be.

The main character is a supernatural entity who is summoned by the pain of bullied, victimized teens. The storyline is pretty basic but it builds quite well. That said, the violence and self abuse scenes can be a bit on the harsh side at times.

For a B title the acting is quite good too. The whole cast but, in particular, the male and female lead and the girl who plays the vengeful spirit, really offer up decent performances.

Combine all these elements and you have a reasonable horror flick on your hands. Six out of ten from me.

This counts as B horror????
rbeckring3 October 2015
Not the worst waste of time I've ever sat through. Cinematography was alright, gore was good, but that's about the nicest thing I can come up with. The protagonist, Lincoln, doesn't get a name until 40 minutes into this dog. We learn his girlfriend's name about 30 minutes in. Nothing really builds in all that time. Obviously, we're not intended to see the "good" kid as a totally sympathetic character, but his motivations are always pretty much a mystery. The "bad" kids, they get about 5 minutes of being mean and the rest of the film tries to be totally overwrought, but really just meanders. And nevermind that not a single one of the kids in this film looks younger than 28 (excepting Grace Phipps). The teachers looked younger than all the kids, but that's no big deal for a lot of high school slasher flicks that at least TRY to convince us that their goings-on are worth caring about. This was a boring one- gimmick piece of trash that should have just been deleted from the directors hard drive to free up space. I'd hoped to hear the Misfits tune that is this film's namesake, but licensing rights cost money. Too bad, just this once, that titles can't be licensed.

"Cut Once For No, Twice For Yes"
Kamurai259 December 2020
Decent watch, might watch again, but can't honestly recommend.

This is not a great movie, and it is impressive breaking in the sense that it takes real problems and an example of awful real places, so it's hard to get on board right away.

Once the setting is established, the majority of what's good about the movie is the ridiculously gratuitous gore and violence being exacted on the horrible characters.

By far, Sierra McCormick is the best actor in this movie. She does such a good job exemplifying a tragic ghost, but since all the adults are just awful, and there are only 2 decent actors out of the rest of the teens, it is a little hard to tell how good she is.

Again, this is more of an elaborate survival situation, which is more of an excuse show teens getting slashed.

So if that doesn't work for you, don't watch this.

Some kind of hate (for this movie)......
FlashCallahan15 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Bullying has turned Lincoln's life into a nightmare. But he learns the true meaning of terror when he is sent to a remote school for troubled teens and the harassments start all over again.

Only this time, someone is watching. A teenage girl named Moira who was driven to suicide by vicious bullying years ago.

When Lincoln accidentally summons Moira from the grave, he unleashes a vengeful force on a mission of revenge.........

It's a sound idea, having a spirit, who went through great pain in life, coming back as a kind of unwanted guardian angel, killing people who may or may not do you harm, but then for only you to get the blame for the killing, and having you end up paying the ultimate sacrifice?

Yes, I thought Candyman was a good film too, but this movie rips it off within an inch of its life, and whilst the spirit self harming herself to inflict injury on others is a pretty sound concept, the film itself doesn't offer anything new to the horror genre.

We all know that Lincoln is a troubled teen, his dad played Leather-face in the remake of Texas Chainsaw, and he was Butterfinger in Hudson Hawk, so that's not a good staple for a role model for anyone.

He also dyes his hair and stays away from everyone, so he's obviously a target for the dastardly bullies.

It's been done a thousand times before, the revenge because of bullying film, and this is pretty much an ordeal to get through, despite the ridiculously short running time.

Do yourself a favour, leave this one alone.

Emo Porn!
scythertitus28 January 2016
The lack of self-reflection on the part of the makers of this film scares me. Every line delivered might as well be the cliché of "Life is pain!" All the bullies are shallow douche bags that are too easy to hate and the protagonist is so drab and 'poor me' that you just want him to top himself inside of five minutes of watching him on screen.

The acting and effects are what you would expect but don't drag the film down anywhere near as much as the poor writing, which really does seem like it came from an angst-ridden teenager. In some ways you could say that this makes the film an accurate portrayal of the characters involved, but all it serves to do is make everyone unlikeable and each scene cringe-inducing in its transparency.

Overall this film will only really please those who identify with this kind of mindset, at one point the 'hero' talks about how he'd love to get a tank and crush all the people that he hates, and we are supposed to sympathise with this! Otherwise this movie is a pain to watch, recommended only for joke viewings with friends, just so long as they aren't in their own angsty teenage phase.

Greyed-out mumblegore
Leofwine_draca10 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
SOME KIND OF HATE is another grim and grimy B-movie horror flick with a generic feel. I do get tired of these greyed-out lifeless productions with underachieving actors who barely do any kind of acting at all. This one tells an age-old story of classroom bullying, which leads the oppressed victim to summon up the long-dead spirit of a girl who proceeds to wreak gory mayhem on the bullies responsible. The tale is heavy on the gore and light on everything else; singularly unsatisfying, with the only feeling evoked depression.

Disappointing, not scary enough and too many plot-holes.
johannes2000-126 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
A young victim of bullying is getting "help" from a ghost-girl who once was a bully-victim herself, but he soon finds out that this "help" consists of relentlessly killing all the bullies. This premise was promising enough, but the movie still failed, lacking a coherent story. It was as if whole segments of the story were left on the cutting-table, making the left-over movie turn into a Swiss cheese.

At the start of the movie we see Lincoln being bullied at home by some big guy. Who is that, his father, stepfather, big brother? Next scene we see Lincoln attack some bully at school, supposedly after a long history of being bullied, but we never see or hear anything about that history. Next scene: Lincoln has joined some sort of boarding school for juvenile delinquents. Why, what happened, was he convicted, and if so, for what? Again no explanation. Out of the blue the ghost of some girl Moira starts a supernatural killing-spree, apparently (at least at the start) on behalf of Lincoln. But who this Moira is or was is only disclosed almost an hour later, with the tiniest of information. And what on earth are all these dark secrets that the board of this institution harbours? Here again only vague hints, no clear explanation.

It goes on and on like this and that's pretty frustrating if you are trying to involve yourself in the story. It doesn't help that the acting is at best mediocre, and that there are many illogical things, like the Moira-character not only killing the bullies and the school's directors but also nice and innocent persons like Lincolns friend. Why would she do that?!

What's left is an incoherent story with many plot-holes and too little scares. Sure, with blood flowing abundantly, but that alone doesn't make for a decent horror movie.

Bullies beware (and everyone else)
dreltart8 December 2015
My very first review on here.

The movie was definitely decently gory. It comes into problems because there are too many characters, but it brings something a bit different than the average horror movie.

Be ready for a low budget, and a lot of teen angst, as well as a somewhat slow start. But if you know what it was like to be bullied, this film can hit some cores in your memory.

No nudity, which is a bit sad, especially with the obvious sexual undertones in the film, but what can you say

It's independent and it shows. But it's good for a rent or a Netflix when you have nothing better to do. Just be ready for the angst.

Some Kind of Unbelievable
bemyfriend-4018430 April 2021
I lasted until halfway through this film. The whole thing was just so unlikely. Well, obviously; a vengeful spirit and all is not generally accepted as being real. But the coed jail camp, where the kids easily meet for casual sex? You'd need to do some kind of world-building for that one.

It's in the title
kosmasp6 March 2016
I had issues with this movie too. With its handling of the characters, with some clichés (or a lot) thrown into the mix and how it seems to evolve too. But it's in the title and it's not about how much you'd like to like the main character. I guess if you had to endure and live through certain circumstances, you might not be right in the head either. But it's about more than that.

It's about making things right, it's about not being understood and it's about bottled up anger, that once finally released ... well it'll be difficult to bottle up again. Or get it under any kind of containment. One thing is for sure: this isn't for everybody. If you can oversee the flaws or rather live with them, you might be able to discover a very raw diamond in the making

Ok, But Could've Been Better
gwnightscream9 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This 2015 horror film tells of a bullied teen who is sent to a reform academy after standing up for himself. He soon becomes bullied by some of the kids there and wants deadly revenge. He gets his wish when a deceased girl's spirit does the gruesome favor since she was recently bullied herself. This starts off ok, but kind of goes downhill and I didn't like the ending. The film sort of follows the revenge formula of "Evilspeak" and "Carrie." If you're a fan of supernatural horror or slashers, give it a try.

Gory B-grade horror without any scares or twists
david_royz25 April 2021
The first half drags with not a lot of action as we're introduced to a bunch of adult-looking kids that we don't really care for.

The second half is an illogical story with plenty of plot holes, but lots of blood and gore done very well. Unfortunately there are no jump-scares, no twists and some questionable acting.

You've probably seen worse films but you'll be wishing it was much better.

When they were writing the story: "So this is about a ghost and bullying, a boy is bullied in school" "Let's make him suffer by adding an alcoholic father" "Send him away for standing up for himself and add some more bullies in the new school" "Give him a girl. She's a bully too that will experiment on him" "You know what? -1 Star For the 2nd Bully being unbelievable. Bad Writing

-1 Star For the Annoying Unbeatable All Knowing Spirit Antagonist

This movie takes two current subjects of popular angst, bullying and cutting , and ties them to a supernatural rage / revenge movie. A Ghost comes back from the dead and starts killing everyone. It starts out alright but probably before halfway through you really don't care about anyone at all and you just hope everyone will get killed by the Antagonist mentioned above.
