If You Can't Hire A Star, Hire An Impersonator
boblipton2 March 2019
Zelda Santley comes onstage and does impersonations of Ted Lewis, Fanny Brice, Mae West and Maurice Chevalier. If you know who these performers are, you'll enjoy this short. If the names mean nothing to you, you will react with as much confusion as if she was an Elvis Impersonator in 1952.

She's accompanied on the piano by Victor Pelle, who does a good job. Of most interest is that while she is changing her outfit a bit for each bit, there's an overhead shot of Mr. Pelle's hands on the keyboard. It brackets the bits very nicely.

Impersonators' acts serve two purposes: first, one can enjoy their sheer ability to imitate other performers. Miss Santley is decent at this part of the job. The other purpose is to give you the performance by the star at a moderate cost. Vitaphone could hardly have afforded to hire these stars for a 7-minute short.

Enjoyable Short

Little Miss Everybody (1929)

** 1/2 (out of 4)

Zelda Santley is the title character in this early Vitaphone short that has her singing and doing impressions. If you're looking for anything great then you're not going to find it here but everything I love about these old shorts can be found right here. Santley is backed by Victor Pelle and the two of them would never appear in another film. I'm going to guess that they were a touring act on the vaudeville circuit and they got the opportunity to appear in this film and do their act. Who knows whatever happened to them or where their careers took them but we do know that this was their only appearance on film and that reason alone makes this rather interesting to watch because this type of thing will never happen again. These Vitaphone shorts can contain a lot of nice entertainment for film buffs.
