Clever idea played straight with good pacing, animation and delivery
I am always impressed by the high quality of animation that is now possible from student projects. Okay of course the jumps in technology greatly help, but you could give me the most powerful and user-friendly software in the world and I still would produce a film that looks like a dog trekked mud across a rug – and probably give you a plot with less creativity than said dog's creation. So, although it is easy to dismiss this as being all the work of computers, it is not the case – you still need to know what you're doing and you still need to have a good idea and delivery; shorts are not immune from the accusation levelled at many blockbusters of being all effects but nothing else.
With Maximall the makers have gone for a fast-moving thriller, which is not uncommon in the world of animated projects, since it really shows off the power of the animation. Here though we have creativity with it since the plot sees a worker in a large mall hunted down by all the trolleys in the place. It is an amusing idea but it is played pretty straight by the film and it builds well from one or two creepy movements, to create a much larger beast of a presence. It has great pace and energy, knowing when to pause to allow the pressure to be built again before releasing it. It is a good delivery and although there is a clear commentary in there if you want it, it is never forced down your throat or allowed to be detrimental to the film.
The animation is impressive but it is the delivery that makes it work – the pacing, the music, the creativity with the trolleys. A very slick and enjoyable short film that is more than just fast-moving animation.
