Andrey Zvyagintsev, the two-time Oscar-nominated Russian filmmaker of “Loveless” and “Leviathan,” will next direct “Jupiter,” a politically-minded movie set to shoot in Spain and France next spring.
The movie will tell the story of a Russian oligarch’s reckoning with the harsh reality of his family’s future.
Anonymous Content and Lorem Ipsum Entertainment (“War on Everyone”) are producing “Jupiter” alongside Les Films du Losange (“A Silence”) in France and Elastica Films (“Anatomy of a Fall”) in Spain. Zvyagintsev will reteam with his regular crew, including cinemtographer Mikhail Krichman and production designer Andrey Ponkratov, who worked “Loveless” and “Leviathan.”
“Jupiter” is set in the seemingly impenetrable world of the ultra-wealthy and is being described by the producers as an “unrelenting exploration of power and corruption.”
Zvyagintsev said “Jupiter” will be a “very modern story” which “goes beyond today’s political context.” “The nature of absolute power is a universal theme,...

Ralph Fiennes and Jessica Chastain play a couple en route to a weekend of debauchery in the desert in this morality tale from John Michael McDonagh
Beneath the garishly brittle portrait of ghastly westerners lording it up in Morocco, there’s a low-key, brooding quality to this accomplished if somewhat inert screen adaptation of Lawrence Osborne’s 2012 bestseller. Written and directed by John Michael McDonagh, whose screen CV includes The Guard (2011), Calvary (2014) and War on Everyone (2016), it’s an anxiously moralist tale of crime and punishment, revenge and resolution, played out against a broad-strokes, culture-clash backdrop that brings a tang of spiteful satire to the deeper discussions of good and evil.
“It’s a long way to go for a party, but then they’re more your friends than mine.” So says David (Ralph Fiennes), a British doctor with a blemished record whom we first meet aboard a boat to “l’Afrique” with his wife,...

Fans of John Michael McDonagh should find much to love in the writer/director’s fourth feature, The Forgiven, but it lacks the refined structure, likeable characters and charred heart of his earlier work.
Based on a novel by Lawrence Osborne, The Forgiven tells the tale of stuck-up, married couple, David (Ralph Fiennes) and Jo (Jessica Chastain), who travel to Morocco to attend a lavish party thrown by wealthy friends, Richard (Matt Smith) and Dally (Caleb Landry Jones). En route, David accidentally runs over a teenage boy, Driss (Omar Ghazaoui), and is forced to face repercussions of the event while partying with pals. The police are convinced it was an accident but when the late boy’s father, Abdellah (Ismael Kanetar) arrives, David is forced to accompany him to help bury his son and face further consequences.

Director John Michael McDonagh, author Lawrence Osborne and the stars of the film discuss personal salvation, simplistic critics and why ‘you can’t build a culture out of non-stop moral hysteria’
Everyone loved John Michael McDonagh’s first film, The Guard, with Brendan Gleeson as a sloshed cop. They admired his second, Calvary, in which Gleeson played a priest reconciled to his own murder. His third, a black comedy with Alexander Skarsgård and Michael Peña, was mostly loathed. McDonagh anticipated these reactions, he says in a pub in south London. He had assumed people would like his first two, “and War on Everyone was meant to be divisive”.
So he would be forgiven for having felt perky before the premiere last year of his fourth film. “I love watching the film!” he says. It’s an old-fashioned noir: tense, starry, good-looking. “So I was like: Everyone’s going to love it.

At what point does art’s stubborn (though not invalid) fascination with the inner mechanics of terrible people cross a line, and begin demanding we show mercy towards the truly irredeemable among us? It’s the problem that lies at the heart of The Forgiven, a somewhat on-the-nose title for a film that lines up for us a miniature troupe of the wealthy and perversely bigoted at leisure in Morocco, who feel free to say horrific things about the local population because they’re shielded behind the walls of a literal castle. The only Moroccans they speak to on a daily basis are the ones whose wages they pay. We watch these one-percenters scurry about like termites, spewing their awfulness, before one of their number undergoes a moral awakening and we...

"There's nowhere to run, nowhere to hide." Roadside Attractions + Vertical Ent. have revealed the official trailer for an indie film titled The Forgiven, the latest from filmmaker John Michael McDonagh. This premiered at last year's Toronto Film Festival to some mixed reviews, but I'm still curious to give it a look when it opens this summer. The Forgiven takes place over a weekend in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco, and explores the reverberations of a random accident on the lives of both the local Muslims, and Western visitors to a house party in a grand villa. Ralph Fiennes & Jessica Chastain star as wealthy Londoners on a trip to a party at a lavish villa, who end up in trouble after a tragic accident with a local teenage boy. The full cast also includes Matt Smith, Ismael Kanater, Caleb Landry Jones, Abbey Lee, with Saïd Taghmaoui and Christopher Abbott. This...

Movies about corrupt cops are usually highly dramatic and action-packed affairs. But one thing they usually depict is a cop, or cops, seeking to clear their name from the corruption that appears to stain it, or leaning into it as they’re either the villain or the antihero that is the main point of the movie. The dark humor that’s present in War on Everyone kind of highlights how hard the movie is leaning into the idea that Terry and Bob are corrupt cops and aren’t trying to hide it. What’s funny is that they’re trying to manage their own lives

Have you ever noticed how, in Western culture, when referring to someone’s death, writers feel obliged to insert the word “tragic” somewhere in the sentence? Is there any other kind, a reader might rightly ask. Sometimes they mean “unexpected,” a kind of shorthand intended to show that the life in question was cut short before its time. But just as often, the phrase “tragic death” is simply redundant, a trite cliché intended to signify that the speaker isn’t some callous bastard.
Writer-director John Michael McDonagh recognizes that not all deaths are tragic. Some are merciful, others accidental; while many are unfortunate, on some occasions, people meet an end that could be described as “poetic” — or at the least, deserved. McDonagh (like younger brother Martin) is a brute-force moralist. Both siblings write scripts in which the term “reckoning” often applies, which is to say, movies and plays where atonement...

While still in the “early stages” of development, Deadline states that Ascendant is set to find a new home with Starz and that the conclusion is being written and executive produced by Adam Cozad (Tarzan) and directed by Age of Adaline helmer Lee Toland Krieger, both of whom were attached the film version was planned.
The series began life on the big screen in 2014 with Divergent, based on the hit novels by Veronica Roth, which wowed audiences as part of the young-adult explosion at the time and grossed almost $290million at the worldwide box office. Then in 2015 the sequel,...

Welcome to Career Watch, a vocational checkup of top actors and directors. In this edition we tackle Alexander Skarsgård, who’s advancing his career with a canny combo of studio movies, indie films, and premium television.
Bottom Line: You never know where you stand with Skarsgård, who has the complexity of a character actor beneath the leading-man looks that launched a thousand memes. (Reads one: “Research shows that if you’re afraid of spiders, you are more likely to find one in your bedroom… I’m really afraid of Alexander Skarsgård.”)
His muscular swagger and danger is on display in “The Legend of Tarzan,” but his tender attentions to wife Jane (Margot Robbie) were that film’s throbbing heart. And in the hugely popular and topical HBO drama series “Big Little Lies,” he holds his own with an ensemble of powerful women including executive producer Nicole Kidman, who performs an...

Beauty and the Beast (Bill Condon)
The near-ubiquitous familiarity with the majority of Disney animations make the financial proposition of a live-action remake a no-brainer greenlight. In aiming to appeal to those experiencing these stories for the first time, the generation prior, and the generation that brought that generation to the theater, it can also be as creatively risk-averse as one might imagine. When Stranger Things landed on Netflix on July 15th, 2016, it took viewers by surprise. Arriving with very little fanfare, its odd combination of pop culture homage, retro aesthetic, and era-specific detail quickly captivated fans, and delivered an extraordinary experience in fantasy-horror storytelling. With just eight episodes, series creators Matt and Ross Duffer built a community within the town of Hawkins, Indiana, and layered it with terrifying darkness. This is the situation that will meet actor Will Chase (Nashville), who has now joined the cast for the second season.
Chase will play new Hawkins resident Neil Mayfield, who has moved to the stricken town with his two children, played by Sadie Sink (American Odyssey) and Dacre Montgomery (Power Rangers). Little is known of their story, beyond the fact that the younger Mayfields will be students at the local school, alongside the children from the first season – played by Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown,...

While the movie Iron Man was the true catalyst to the invasion of the amount of comic book movies you see on the big screen today, The Avengers could be considered equally responsible for the multi-billion dollar comic book franchise cinematic success. By the way I certainly haven’t forgotten about X-Men but X-Men didn’t create nearly as much spinoff box office success as The Avengers has. Think about Thor and the Captain America movies which on their own have grossed billions of dollars. But let’s take a step back to The Avengers for a moment. With Infinity War on everyone’s

What is it? A professional woman and her oddball father dance around their complicated relationship, both in and out of costumes.
Why buy it? Family dysfunction is a longtime staple in cinema, but no film this year captured it with such humor, warmth, and wisdom as Maren Ade’s third feature. Even at 162 minutes our time with Ines and her oddball father feels far too short as their journey of discovery becomes one we don’t want to see end. There’s an honesty here — yes, even with subtitles — about the way we see ourselves through our loved ones...

Daughters of the Dust (Julie Dash)
At the dawn of the 20th century, a multi-generational family in the Gullah community on the Sea Islands off of South Carolina – former West African slaves who adopted many of their ancestors’ Yoruba traditions – struggle to maintain their cultural heritage and folklore while contemplating a migration to the mainland, even further from their roots. Cohen Media Group is proud to present the 25th anniversary restoration of director Julie Dash’s landmark film Daughters of the Dust.

Even some of the more engaging action comedy capers have to make a compromise, as the success rate in establishing a strong narrative while remaining consistently funny is a a hurdle many a filmmaker has stumbled on. Some thrive in their farcicality and the story becomes something of a side-note, while in others, it’s the comedy that takes precedence, with the narrative working as a mere vehicle for the humour. Dax Shepard’s CHiPS is a rare case, though – for it succeeds in neither.
Shepard plays Jon Baker, a newly enforced member of the Chp (California Highway Patrol) wanting to make his mark, and impress his wife (Kristen Bell) in a bid to save their dying marriage. Lesbians. The Burmese. Maybe farmers. With all the minorities, interest groups, nationalities sexualities, and ethnicities that John Michael McDonagh finds time to craft a specially designed slur for, or chuck a throwaway insult at, in his shambolic, shaggy, occasionally very funny “War on Everyone,” it becomes a fun game to work out if there’s anyone who definitely will not be offended. I don’t think Tibetans get a mention, and I’m pretty sure meteorologists and albinos emerge unscathed.

In the action-comedy War on Everyone, two corrupt cops (Alexander Skarsgard and Michael Pena) are literally waging war on every criminal they run across in Albuquerque. These two are a menace themselves: Terry (Skarsgard) is a heavy drinker who likes the ladies, while family man Bobby (Pena) is is a fast-talking wise-cracker. A Bigger Splash (Luca Guadagnino)
Despite a loose script that justifies little, Italian director Luca Guadagnino’s follow-up feature to his glorious melodrama I Am Love is a sweaty, kinetic, dangerously unpredictable ride of a film. One is frustrated by the final stroke of genius that never came, but boy was it fun to spend two hours inside such a whirlwind of desires, mind games, delirious sights and sounds.

Remember the Nineties? Specifically, that decade's subgenre of films that proliferated during the A.T. (After Tarantino) era, the ones featuring retro-hip musical deep cuts and gallows-humor dialogue dotting horrific gunfights? Usually the antiheroes were criminals; in the case of writer-director John Michael McDonagh's tart-tongued throwback, they're police officers. And from the moment that Terry (Alexander Skarsgård) and Bob (Michael Peña) show up, chasing down a street performer – "Always wondered if you hit a mime, does he make a sound?" – you realize you've entered some sort of Lethal Weapon through the looking glass.

Desperately in need of money to care for a sick parent, Jenny (Morris) takes a job supervising children at a learning centre for gifted students. But when she and two other new employees are ushered into a maximum-security underground bunker where eerily robotic children are outfitted with augmented reality glasses, Jenny finds herself thrust into a disturbing technological experiment in which she is an unwitting player in a terrifying virtual game.
Techno-horror is a genre that, given my previous experiences with films of this nature, is really hard to get right. The reliance on the technology within, techno-babble et al. can, and often does, overwhelm the story the filmmakers are trying to tell.

Within its first 10 minutes, War on Everyone smashes at least two dozen stereotypes familiar to anyone who has ever watched a cop movie made by a Hollywood studio, doing so in a rollicking and hilarious fashion. It's a barrage of silly sight gags and punchy one-liners that is simultaneously silly and smart, a series of over the top explosions that blow up, one after the other, to ever greater effect. When things finally slow down, it's only for a moment to allow the audience to catch its collective breath and ask, perhaps, where can this crazy thing possibly go from here? Writer and director John Michael McDonagh, who previously made the tight, intense drama Calvary, here returns to the rough, black comic territory of...

One day, perhaps, murderously corrupt police officers will once again be a viable source of comedy. At this particular historical moment, however, a movie like War On Everyone has its work cut out for it. The very first scene attempts to get laughs from cops who deliberately run over a fleeing suspect, after he’s stopped running and clearly decided to surrender; it’s supposed to be funny simply because the suspect is a mime. (“I always wondered: If you hit a mime, does he make a sound?” “Well, now you know.”) Later, one of the cops, asked why he joined the police force, answers “I guess I always wanted to pervert the course of justice. Plus you get to shoot people for no reason. Nobody can do a goddamn thing about it.” Pitch-black comedy along these lines worked as recently as Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans, right...

Plot: Two misanthropic New Mexico cops (Michael Pena & Alexander Skarsgård) on the verge of being fired for their corrupt ways, go on the trail of a missing million dollar score, winding up face-to-face with an English mobster (Theo James) who’s even worse than they are. Review: War On Everyone truly feels like a movie only a guy like John Michael McDonagh would have had the stones to make.... Read More...

Hindsight and Head Gear are teaming on mezzannine fund.
UK financiers Hindsight and Head Gear are launching a mezzanine fund for film and TV projects in the UK and Us markets.
The two parties expect to conclude first financing deals for the fund – branded H2 – after Berlin.
H2 will offer producers tactical short terms loans and permanent mezzanine finance. Agreement to launch it follows discussions over recent months.
The first £5m for H2 is committed from existing Hindsight - formerly Prescience - and Head Gear funds and investors. The duo’s expectation is that this will increase to a £25m-30m level by the end of the first year’s trading.
The financiers are working with a third party fund raiser in a bid to bring in new sources of investment for H2.
Phil Hunt, Head Gear, CEO, commented: “Head Gear’s aim has always been to provide efficient, speedy and straightforward investment to producers. I’m really...
