Emily Blunt frantically hustles for a better life, only to fall deeper into a dangerous racketeering scheme, in the official trailer for David Yates’ Pain Hustlers, which Netflix released on Tuesday.
Dreaming of riches for herself and her young daughter, Liza Drake, played by Blunt, lands a job from Pete Brenner (Chris Evans) at a failing pharma startup in a Florida strip mall.
“There’s nothing so inspiring as sheer desperation,” Drake says at one point in the trailer as her charm, drive and guts catapult her into the high life as a sales executive at a company marketing a new kind of opioid drug offering pain relief to cancer patients.
The problem is that drug unwittingly is helping spark the U.S. opioid epidemic and Drake’s unceasing hustle can’t keep the company and her position safe at the center of a criminal enterprise. And to complicate their success,...

Emily Blunt pursues a better life for herself and her young daughter only to fall with dire consequences amid a criminal conspiracy in the teaser trailer for David Yates’ Pain Hustlers, which Netflix dropped on Wednesday.
“Is that even legal?” Liza Drake (Blunt) asks Pete Brenner, played by Chris Evans, at one point in the trailer after landing a job at a failing pharma startup in a Florida strip mall. Liza’s charm, drive and guts send her into the high life, but it’s not enough to keep the company and her position safe at the center of a criminal enterprise, according to a synopsis of the film from Netflix.

...remember when Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker) lost the Globe to her ex husband James Cameron (Avatar) at the Golden Globes. Before he even began thanking his team, he name-checked her to her apparent delight in the crowd as the camera held on her.
I'm actually not well prepared because frankly I thought Kathryn was going to win this -- I'm kind of winging it here. She richly deserves it...
Of course by the time the Oscars rolled around the situation reversed and The Hurt Locker was the favourite film and Bigelow became the first female director ever to win the Oscar. The Globes gave a Best Director trophy to Barbra Streisand for Yentl (1983) two decades earlier so perhaps they didn't feel any need to make history since they already had? Anyway we figured this anniversary was worth noting because the awards trouble for female directors has also haunted this Oscar season.

Chilean director Pablo Larraín had a major 2016, releasing three films in the United States with The Club, Neruda, and his English-language debut Jackie. With his post-9/11 drama The True American delayed, he embarked on a smaller feature in his native country. Ema is a dance-focused drama starring frequent collaborator Gael García Bernal and newcomer Mariana Di Girolamo. The script written by Guillermo Calderon (Neruda) and Alejandro Moreno follows Bernal as a dance choreographer and Di Girolamo as his schoolteacher wife. As they face the hardships of a failed adoption, they will express themselves through dance.

Filmmaker Pablo Larraín was a busy man in 2016, with the release of two separate critically-acclaimed, awards season contenders “Jackie” and “Neruda.” Now, it appears he’ll be performing double-duty in 2019, as well, as he pushes one production back and fills in the gap with a new, exciting, last-minute film, according to IndieWire.
Since it was announced back in 2017, “The True American” is the film that many believed would be Larraín’s next feature.

Chilean director Pablo Larraín had a major 2016, releasing three films in the United States with The Club, Neruda, and his English-language debut Jackie. It was thought he would continue working in Hollywood with his next project, the post-9/11 drama The True American starring Kumail Nanjiani, Mark Ruffalo, and Amy Adams. However, it seems like the production is being delayed to 2019 (and a new cast may become attached), so in the meantime, he’s embarked on a smaller feature in his native country.
Starting today, he’s beginning the shoot for Ema, a dance-focused drama starring frequent collaborator Gael García Bernal and newcomer Mariana Di Girolamo, Indiewire reports. Pablo Larraín is back. Two years after his Jacqueline Kennedy biopic “Jackie” scored an Oscar nomination for Natalie Portman while his “Neruda” was the Chilean submission for best foreign language film, Larraín is getting behind the camera again for a secret project that came together just a few weeks ago.
With his next American project, “The True American,” pushed into 2019, Larraín has begun production on “Ema,” an original story co-written by “Neruda” screenwriter Guillermo Calderon and New York-based playwright Alejandro Moreno. The movie stars Gael García Bernal, who previously worked with Larraín on “No” and “Neruda,” opposite newcomer Mariana Di Girolamo. Seeing an opening in his schedule, Larraín and his co-writers conceived of the project earlier this summer and plan to continue writing it throughout the six-week shoot, which commences Monday at the Chilean seaport of Valparaíso.

The last time we saw Amy Adams on the big screen was in last year’s “Justice League” film. Even though we’re only two years removed from her roles in “Arrival” and “Nocturnal Animals,” it’s time for Amy Adams to get that “Justice League” stink off her. And it looks like she’s ready to do that with the upcoming film, “The True American.”
According to Variety, Amy Adams is in negotiations to make “The True American” her next project.

After holding a story about the construction of a package for Pablo Larrain’s The True American, I am dubious about a story I just read that Annapurna is making this film, which does have Amy Adams and Mark Ruffalo poised to star. After leading last year’s The Big Sick, which had a hefty dose of drama to go with its comedy, Kumail Nanjiani is going deeper into the former genre with a new project. He’s in talks to lead the post-9/11 drama The True American alongside Mark Ruffalo, according to The Tracking Board.
Update: Amy Adams is also in talks to join the project, according to Variety.
Coming from Chilean director Pablo Larraín (Jackie, Neruda), it’s an adaptation of the Anand Giridharadas‘ novel The True American: Murder and Mercy in Texas, telling the true story of a Bangladeshi immigrant who was attacked after a Texas man went on a murder spree following the September 11th terrorist attacks. Previously set to be directed by Kathryn Bigelow and starring Tom Hardy, if talks go through, Ruffalo will now take his role in the Annapurna Pictures production, and Bigelow will stay on to produce.

The Coen Brothers are planning something quite ambitious for their next project. News broke at the beginning of the year that the filmmaking duo was set to direct a Western anthology series under Annapurna’s new television division, but the Albuquerque Journal now reports the project is a “feature-length omnibus consisting of six different stories.”
Whether these different stories will be released in pieces or as a whole film remains to be seen, but Annapurna did say it was mulling “an innovative television and theatrical integrated approach” for the distribution. Perhaps the feature version will be released in theaters, while a television distributor will air or stream the series in six parts. There has been no confirmation on the distribution strategy yet.

In the battle for what will be the premier streaming home for current independent film, Amazon Prime is showing signs that it could top Netflix, FilmStruck, and Mubi. Between funding auteur-driven Amazon originals like Jim Jarmusch’s “Paterson,” Park Chan-wook’s “The Handmaiden,” Kenneth Lonergan’s “Manchester By the Sea,” and their exclusive deal with A24 (“American Honey,” “Lobster,” “Swiss Army Man,” and “Moonlight” which arrives 5/21), Prime has a good percentage of the best titles.
What often gets lost in Amazon’s suboptimal browsing interface is the number of recent lower-profile indies on the service that feature some of the most exciting filmmaking of the last year. Here are seven recent gems you shouldn’t miss.

You have never seen anything like this film. Sure, it looks like a late-era technicolor film — shot on 35mm, with deliciously saturated production and costume design — but this isn’t nostalgic kitsch.

Just one month before J.C. Chandor’s “Triple Frontier” was set to start filming, Paramount has dropped out of the project, and so have the two biggest stars attached to the action thriller, Channing Tatum and Tom Hardy, as reported by Deadline. According to the publication, sources said that the actors were not too happy about a new version of the script that Chandor had turned in. And, apparently, according to some Deadline sources, the studio decided to drop out when those “creative differences” threatened to affect the progress of the project, which was supposed to be finished in a tight schedule and for a price.
Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali and Adria Arjona were recently cast in the film, which Chandor is set to direct from a screenplay he co-wrote with Mark Boal.

In 2014, it looked like Kathryn Bigelow was going to tackle an adaptation of The True American. The nonfiction work follows Raisuddin Bhuiyan, who was injured in a hate crime shortly after 9/11, and later sought to get perpetrator Mark Stroman, a man who called himself “Arab Slayer,” off death row. It’s a story that appeared to deal in subject matter with which Bigelow had been working, with Tom Hardy attached to star. Bigelow, however, has since moved on to other pursuits, and now Deadline reports that Pablo Larraín will direct the movie. Larraín won acclaim last year for his unsettling take on a Jackie Kennedy biopic, Jackie. Per Deadline, Hardy is still set to appear in The True American. Curiously enough, the actor is also working on another project that was once connected to Bigelow, Triple Frontier.

Tom Hardy and director Pablo Larraín – both of whom are on hot streaks right now – will be teaming up to bring us an adaptation of The True American, based on Anand Giridharadas’ non-fiction novel of the same name.
The story is set in Texas just days after 9/11 and follows a Muslim man named Rais Bhuiyan, “who narrowly survived a killing spree that took the lives of two other immigrants. Employed at a Dallas-area convenience store as he established himself in America, Bhuiyan worked to have his attacker, self-styled “Arab-slayer” Mark Stroman, spared from execution.” On board to produce are Kathryn Bigelow and Megan Ellison, alongside Matthew Budman and Juan de Dios Larraín, with Annapurna Pictures set to distribute.

Nearly three years ago, we got very excited when it was announced that “The Hurt Locker” and “Zero Dark Thirty” director Kathryn Bigelow was going to helm “The True American” starring Tom Hardy. However, the project didn’t get in front of cameras, and honestly, we kind of forgot about it. But it’s kicking back to life, with an exciting new name in the director’s seat.

“Jackie” director Pablo Larraín is attached to helm Annapurna’s “The True American,” the fact-based story of an immigrant from Bangladesh who fought to have the man who attempted to gun him down spared from execution, TheWrap has learned. The film is based on a book by Anand Giridharadas, “The True American: Murder and Mercy in Texas,” which was published in 2014 by W.W. Norton & Company. It tells the true story of Rais Bhuiyan, a Bangladeshi American who was shot in the face while working at a convenience store in Dallas by a self-styled “Arab Slayer,” then worked to spare his attacker.

When Pablo Larraín made his English-language debut with last year’s Jackie, many wondered what a Chilean director could bring to such a story embedded in American politics and history. Of course, he proved himself by making a historical drama better than what most American directors have done when it comes to biopics of similarly iconic figures. With a new film, he’s looking to test expectations again, and that’s just judging by the title.
The Neruda director is attached to helm The True American, which Kathryn Bigelow was planning to direct a few years back. Starring Tom Hardy, it’s an adaptation of the Anand Giridharadas‘ novel The True American: Murder and Mercy in Texas, telling the true story of a Bangladeshi immigrant who was attacked after a Texas man went on a murder spree following the September 11th terrorist attacks.

I'm not sure Tom Hardy will ever become a household name. If he were already I don't think I'd be as nervous for the box office prospects as I am for Mad Max: Fury Road, which looks balls-to-the-wall insane and a movie I'm counting the minutes until my press screening next week, though at the same time nervous general audiences won't rush to support. That said, what it would take for Hardy to become a household name is probably a career path that would result in Tom Hardy no longer being the Tom Hardy we all know and love. While Hardy may have played a major role in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises, I would wager the majority of people unfamiliar with his face don't even realize he's the same actor starring in the new Mad Max film or even the actor that played Eames in Nolan's Inception,...

Zero Dark Thirty helmer Kathryn Bigelow is preparing to move ahead on her next film, a prisoner of war drama revolving around the true-life story of Bowe Bergdahl.
News comes via Deadline, who reports that the project has taken top priority on the director’s busy schedule, unofficially pushing her work on The True American and South American drug film, Triple Frontier. Producer Megan Ellison stated that studios are already circling the as-yet-untitled Bergdahl drama, which will act as the third collaboration between Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal.
Still in its embryonic state, it’s expected that the picture will center on the Bergdahl’s gruelling story as an American soldier captured by the Taliban and held hostage for a full five years. During this excruciating period, the prisoner of war was subjected to torture and upon his release as part of a high-profile and indeed controversial exchange, Bergdahl began...

"Hey! If we're going to have a female superhero movie it should be directed by a female!" Hilarious. And I'm not saying that because I don't think a female should be hired to direct Warner Bros. and DC Comics' planned Wonder Woman movie, but because it's not as if they are breaking any gender lines in doing so. Why isn't a female director also being sought to direct The Flash, Aquaman or Shazamc Oh... I see... Either way, it is what it is and I guess women will just have to be satisfied for the bone they're thrown for the time being as The Hollywood Reporter brings word WB is searching for a female director to direct the Gal Gadot-led Wonder Woman feature targeting a June 23, 2017 release following Gadot's appearance in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016. While sites have already started putting together their wishlists, Forbes...
