Claws-out high school drama has inspired some pretty memorable movies. Youthful touchstones like Heathers, Cruel Intentions, and Mean Girls take the intensity of hormones and the cruelty of high school students, and mix them with snappy, era-appropriate dialogue and up-and-coming stars. It’s a potent cocktail that when mixed just right yields delicious results. Netflix is looking to follow that template with their new high school revenge comedy Do Revenge, directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, the co-writer of Thor: Love and Thunder who previously helmed Netflix’s Someone Great and created MTV’s Sweet/Vicious.
Will Do Revenge become the 2020s defacto teens-behaving-badly comedy? Only time will tell, but Do Revenge’s cast is enticing enough to suggest that the alchemy may be right for another mean girl magnum opus. Not sure where you’ve seen some of these fresh-faced stars before? Read below to find out.

‘Please Baby Please’ Trailer: Karl Glusman and Andrea Riseborough Turn Heads in Gay Musical Fantasia
One of the wildest, campiest, least apologetic films of the 2022 festival season is “Please Baby Please.” Amanda Kramer’s 1950s-set LGBT musical thriller tells the story of a straight-passing married couple who begin questioning their conceptions of gender, sexuality, and monogamy after witnessing a murder and becoming involved with a greaser gang known as the Young Gents. The movie premiered at the Rotterdam Film Festival and was soon acquired by Music Box Films, who is giving it a theatrical release later this year.
“There are many things we love about this film, including Andrea Riseborough’s fierce and fearless performance,” said Music Box Films’ Brian Andreotti. “Director Amanda Kramer’s bold mise en scene and stylized 1950s iconography combine to give adventurous audiences a highly entertaining musing on gender roles and desire that is both timely and timeless,”

A first-look image has debuted of Andrea Riseborough, whose credits include “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance),” and Karl Glusman, who starred in Gaspar Noé’s Cannes entry “Love,” in Amanda Kramer’s “Please Baby Please.” In the challenging image, Glusman is seen branding Riseborough with an iron.
The film also stars Harry Melling, who appeared as Dudley Dursley in the Harry Potter franchise and in “The Queen’s Gambit,” and Demi Moore. It has its world premiere at next month’s Rotterdam Film Festival. CAA Media Finance is handling sales.
The movie follows bohemian couple Suze and Arthur who, after witnessing a murder in the gritty streets of a surreal 1950s Manhattan, become the dangerous obsession of a greaser gang that “awakens a sleeping quandary about the couple’s sexual identity,” according to press notes. Moore plays Suze’s glamorous upstairs neighbour, who has lovers and – even more impressively – a dishwasher.

Currently on an amazing almost film per year streak, Amanda Kramer first landed onto the film festival scene with 2018’s Ladyworld (TIFF selection) and currently has a pair of features items in post – the one we’re focused on is the shot in October and in Montana project that netted Andrea Riseborough, Harry Melling, Demi Moore, Karl Glusman and Ryan Simpkins. Please Baby Please is about a couple’s honeymoon period that goes off the rails — a project set in the 50’s and Kramer reteams with scribe Noel David Taylor.

Things kick off on the 2nd with the latest installment of Blumhouse’s Into the Dark series, School Spirit, and the directorial debut of Jason Mewes, Method in the Madness, also hits various platforms the same day.
August 6th is a very busy day for digital releases, as we have 10 different films coming out that day, including Brightburn, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, The Night Sitter, and Perception. Nekrotronic, featuring Monica Bellucci, arrives on the 9th, and just a few days later, The Banana Splits Movie hits digital on the 13th, and I’m still not sure what to make of it, but I will definitely be watching that night to see just what on earth they’ve done with these classic TV characters.

The third season of Stranger Things is here, folks! Netflix's sci-fi hit premieres on July 4, and it introduces a slew of new characters.
Our favorite, by far, is Robin, who's played by Maya Hawke. The 20-year-old actress' character was initially described by Netflix as an "'alternative girl' bored with her mundane day job. She seeks excitement in her life and gets more than she bargained for when she uncovers a dark secret in Hawkins, In." Now that we (and hopefully you) have seen the season, it's clear they weren't kidding - Robin plays a major role in one of the most exciting storylines in the third season as she teams up with Dustin, Steve, and Erica. Well, in between slinging ice cream with Steve at Scoops Ahoy, that is.
If you're wondering where you've seen Hawke before, there are a few things that she's become well-known for since beginning...

In the opening credits of Amanda Kramer's Ladyworld, we hear what we'll eventually confirm as an earthquake that has left eight young girls trapped in the house where they were supposed to celebrate the birthday of one of them. With the house buried in the rubble, soon this group of girls -- who don't really know each other -- realize that it'll be impossible for them to leave and that it's likely that no one from the outside will come to rescue them because they could be in a similar situation of isolation. Ladyworld suggests a complicated scenario immediately, given that the extreme situation will be assimilated in different ways by each of the characters. At the center of the ensemble we have Olivia (Ariela...

Austin-based genre festival Fantastic Fest is accustomed to the big guns of genre cinema — both M. Night Shyamalan and Guillermo del Toro have made appearances — and this year, two iconic women of horror showed up to promote their new films (and old ones). Jamie Lee Curtis flipped off the audience and yucked it up for the Texas premiere of “Halloween,” while Jessica Harper surprised a stunned theater of Dario Argento superfans who anticipated the event’s secret screening would be Luca Guadagnino’s reimagining of “Suspiria.” It was, and god, was it dazzling. While these big-ticket guests and films are always a draw, the best of the fest lay in the scrappy, bizarre pics fighting tooth and nail to find their audiences.

This Saturday, co-writer/director Amanda Kramer’s daring and unforgettable feature film debut, Ladyworld, is set to enjoy its world premiere at Fantastic Fest 2018. Starring Ariela Barer, Annalise Basso, Ryan Simpkins, Maya Hawke, Odessa Adlon, Tatsumi Romano, Zora Casebere, and Atheena Frizzell, Ladyworld follows a group of teenagers who get trapped inside a house after a catastrophic earthquake, unable to escape or reach the outside world, and we watch as their relationships and power hierarchies dissolve the longer they’re isolated together.
Ahead of its Fantastic Fest bow this weekend, Daily Dead caught up with Kramer to talk about her unconventional exploration of the dynamics between young women in Ladyworld, and she also chatted about putting together her brilliant ensemble of up-and-coming talent, the challenges of shooting this film in just 12 days, and how her prior experiences working in both the literary and theater worlds helped prepare her to make her first feature film.

Exclusive: In Amanda Kramer’s Ladyworld, a group of girls celebrate a birthday, but when an earthquake hits, things start to take spiral out of control as they become trapped. Thus begins a surreal Lord of the Flies-esque study as their friendships, identities and their view on reality are challenged.
In the exclusive clip above, Maya Hawke (who can be seen in the upcoming third season of Stranger Things) and Ariela Barer (Marvel’s Runaways), donning eccentric hair and makeup choices, talk about what makes a good leader — all of which do not apply to Barer’s character, apparently.
Surreal, bizarre and kind of haunting, Ladyworld marks Kramer’s feature directorial debut. The film will make its World Premiere at Fantastic Fest in Austin on Sept. 22. Kramer will be in attendance at the fest along with producers Thomas R. Burke and Leal Naim, Editor/Co-Writer Benjamin Shearn, and Actor...

Netflix has dropped a first-look image of Maya Hawke as Robin and promo for the upcoming third season of Stranger Things, which includes at the very end, a hint of a later than hoped-for summer 2019 premiere date with the words, “Coming next summer”. Previous seasons premiered in July 2016 and October 2017.
Hawke’s character is described as an alternative girl who is equal parts sharp and playful. Bored with her mundane day job, she just wants a little excitement in her life… and gets more than she bargained for when she uncovers a dark secret in Hawkins. In the pic she’s featured with Steve (Joe Keery) behind the cash register at ice cream shop Scoops Ahoy. The commercial-like promo takes us on a tour of Starcourt Mall where the shop is located.
