In 1938, David Kurtz traveled from his home in Flatbush, Brooklyn, for a vacation across Europe. He stopped in the small Polish village of Nasielsk, where he was born — a pinpoint on the map that would have been ignored by any tourist, and has been mostly overlooked by history.
But he happened to bring a 16mm camera, bought expressly for the trip. And in 2009, his grandson Glenn Kurtz found three minutes of footage, brittle with age, that pulls this tiny village back into our collective memory.
Kurtz wrote a beautiful book about his experience in 2014, called “Three Minutes in Poland: Discovering a Lost World in a 1938 Family Film.” Director Bianca Stigter found the book, and then the footage, which was added to the website of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. She was inspired by both to make a short film essay, “Three Minutes — Thirteen Minutes — Thirty Minutes,” which she has...

Two boys in early adolescence drive — in a car, no less! — through the wintry backwoods of the Czech Republic looking for some warmth in Winter Flies (Vsechno bude), from Slovenian-born director Olmo Omerzu (Family Film). Written by Petr Pycha, this road movie has many of the stock elements of the genre while simultaneously offering something akin to a fresh twist because the protagonists are 12 and “almost 15” instead of the usual adults. Though Omerzu cuts back and forth between a police interrogation and the boys’ adventures on the road, there’s no sense they are fleeing from ...

Most of the time the internet is at war, but on rare occasions everyone is able to agree on something: one of those things is the fact that Oscar Isaac would make a perfect Gomez Addams in a new adaptation of The Addams Family. Now, proving that if you wish hard enough dreams do come true, the latest word on the grapevine has it that this is really happening.
Tracking Board is reporting that the Star Wars actor is currently in talks to voice the Addams family patriarch in the upcoming animated movie, which was announced the other month. Production on the film is currently underway in Vancouver, with Sausage Party director Conrad Vernon helming the project for MGM. Corpse Bride‘s Pamela Pettler wrote the script, with revisions by Matt Lieberman.
There’s no word just yet on who could play the rest of the ooky, kooky family, but...

Quentin Tarantino is currently looking for a new home for his ninth movie. As you've probably heard, the director has removed himself from scandal-plagued patron Harvey Weinstein, who has backed his features since picking up 1992’s Reservoir Dogs.
According to Indiewire Tarantino has been making the rounds and just completed a series of pitch meetings last week with five studios (not including Disney) seeking to back his new project, which he finished writing about five months ago.
The story was initially rumored to be set in the late '60s-early 70s in Los Angeles and that it would follow the Manson family murders. The initial report described the film as centering "on Sharon Tate, the actress, and wife of director Roman Polanski who was murdered by Manson and his followers in 1969."
A more recent report goes on to say, "there has been a lot of press that the script focuses...

You can't keep a good family down, especially one as delightfully morbid as The Addams Family. Close to four years ago, MGM began moving ahead with an animated Addams Family film in the wake of the cancellation of Tim Burton's stop-motion Addams Family project, but, we've heard very little since then. So little that I'd actually forgotten it was even in the... Read More...

“Family film” isn’t the first genre that leaps to mind when talking about Todd Haynes. The director of Safe, Carol, and I’m Not There tends to specialize in specifically adult preoccupations, like forbidden romance, musical legacy, drugs, sex, repression, and the toxicity of modern living. He does not, as a rule, make movies for all ages. Of course, one could have once said the same about gangster-movie luminary Martin Scorsese before he delightfully adapted Brian Selznick’s illustrated historical fiction novel The Invention Of Hugo Cabret into a new classic of warm-hearted, whirligig family cinema. Maybe Selznick is the key to getting these grownups in touch with their inner children, because Haynes has now taken his own swing at the author’s work with an adaptation of Selznick’s juvenile-lit bestseller, Wonderstruck.

Kim Kardashian was still struggling with anxiety in public places following her traumatic robbery in Paris on Sunday's new Keeping Up With the Kardashians, while hints toward husband Kanye West's looming breakdown and hospitalization only added to her stress.
It's clear from the first moments of the episode that the 36-year-old reality star was still emotionally and psychologically healing weeks after she was held at gunpoint in her hotel room. Kim and her family turned out to Kanye's Saint Pablo concert at The Forum in Los Angeles, but it's clear that she wasn't exactly enjoying the atmosphere.
"I can feel the energy of people pulling out their camera phones and just a lot of people are so, like, curious to see, 'What is she doing? God forbid she's smiling.' Or, if I'm not smiling, it's like, 'Oh, she's so depressed,'" Kim explained. "I don't want that kind of pressure right now."

.Composer and lyricist of musicals Groundhog Day and Matilda, Tim is also a pianist, singer, comedian, actor, and — until 2 days ago — a director..
In a personal message, Minchin went on: .I.ve recently been working in three different continents, missing my kids a lot, sleeping too little and not playing piano enough. And then a couple of days ago, the animated film to which I.ve dedicated the last four years of my life was shut down by the new studio execs..
That film was Larrikins, the outback-set feature Minchin joined as composer and lyricist in 2013 after sparking to a script from Harry Cripps (Paws, The Magic Pudding)..
