The Wake is a beautiful love story, with a twist.
- 1970's Ireland, a quiet working class suburb of Dublin where very little happens, that is until Danny, devoted husband of Phyllis, barricades their apartment and refuses anyone entry. His wife is dead, and despite being a devout Catholic, he will not allow local Priest, the outspoken Father Willy to bless the body, nor permit anyone at all to enter the apartment. Tensions escalate as the entire town gathers outside the building, and after insulting them and revealing secrets that small town folk would prefer to take to the grave, Danny fires a round of shot above their heads, giving his arch nemesis the debonair chief Inspector all the grounds he needs to force entry and arrest Danny. But Danny's friend the soon to retire Sgt. O'Reilly is having none of that. So together with the beautiful Anne, the negotiator from Dublin, they try to talk sense into the stubborn Danny before all is lost. Some resentment ignites among the locals as Anne is of mixed race. Tensions and tempers rise when Danny threatens to burn the entire building down with him and Phyllis's remains unless the Inspector gives into his demands. The Wake is a gripping edge of your seat drama, a story that lays bare humanities deepest fears in a way that does not lead to melodrama, but illustrates nobility amongst ordinary people, struggling to cope under adverse circumstances, with the cards stacked against them.—Brett Halliday
