Clever Short Cartoon
boblipton1 February 2015
A young woman finds a record and plays it on her phonograph. It skips -- and her life skips to that point in time.

There's little to this Oscar-nominated short but those details -- other than a "Back to the Future" reference if you look very closely. Nonetheless and because of its short length -- it's three minutes if you include the credits -- its subtext warning the audience not to be too impatient, to be willing to enjoy the moment rather than skipping to the next, stands out. As does its wry humor.

I doubt this will win the best animated short Oscar -- those usually go to something a bit more pompous. However, if you haven't seen this already, it's worth your time to look at.

Really good but a 2 minute film getting an Oscar nomination?
planktonrules8 February 2015
"A Single Life" is the most enjoyable of the shorts by far. It's a weird story about a cutely animated girl whose record player acts much like a time machine--and she finds that she can travel back and forth in time with this machine. You'll really have to see this one for yourself to understand what I mean. However, at only 2 minutes in length, it's hard to imagine it taking the Oscar. Fortunately, the ending is quite dark and quite funny and I heard many in the audience laugh during this film. I think this Dutch film by Marieke Blaauw, Joris Oprins, Job Roggeveen has little chance to win, but it did make me laugh as well. I certainly would love to see more from these folks, as they have a real knack for CGI and humor.

The title is a play on words, a pun, which has more than one meaning

Warning: Spoilers
This film was nominated for the Academy Award for Animated Short. There will be mild spoilers here:

It will take me longer to write this review than it took me to watch this short, which is roughly three minutes long. It's a cute, funny, clever and wicked short. It's like whipped cream on a dessert-tasty and light.

The plot is that a young woman gets a 45 with a song on it. She puts it on her record player and accidentally discovers that the grooves on the record correspond to points on her lifeline.

Unaware or unmindful of the admonition that it may be well for you to leave well enough alone when you know not the consequences of your actions (if you don't know what it does, don't mess with it) she starts playing with this, moving the needle around on the grooves and moves all up and down on the time-line of her life.

It's done very cleverly and the ending is rather apt, I suppose. I'm not surprised by the nomination and I don't really have a problem with it in general, except that it was a very strong year for short animation, with a couple of shorts I feel are stronger than this and another of the nominees. Still, I'm glad they got recognition and I wish them luck.

This short is available for download online and is well worth watching. Recommended.

A short that unfortunately ends just as it gets going
StevePulaski25 February 2015
A Single Live, the Netherlands' contribution to the Oscars this year, is the shortest Oscar nominated short film, clocking in at two minutes and length, and unfortunately, that's just a little bit too small to get this short film off the ground. Animated with a pleasant mix of what looks to be stop motion animation and computer animation, the short concerns a woman who finds her record player has the ability to transport her to different moments in her life, all the way from her infancy to her older years. By the time one figures out how this mystery works, the short is already over, and while it features a unique premise, its concision makes for an experience that's slightly forgettable.

Directed by: Joris Oprins.

A lovely idea. And its brilliant use. A woman, a gift, a pizza, a phonograph and a travel unique in all senses. The source of seduction of this short animation - the delicate feeling to be about yourself.

Life as a Phonograph Record
Hitchcoc29 October 2021
The title of the song is the title of this little film. A girl, possibly a teenager, gets a package containing a phonograph record. Depending where the tone arm is placed, it becomes a part of her life. She goes from herself, to her older self, to being a little girl. The idea is quite clever and works very well.

Clever and somewhat amusing (in a weird way).

'A SINGLE LIFE': Three Stars (Out of Five)

A 3 minute Dutch animated short; which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film (at the upcoming 87th Academy Awards). It was directed by Marieke Blaauw (who also wrote the film), Joris Oprins and Job Roggeveen and features Pien Feith as a voice actor. The short tells the story of a girl, named Pia, who travels back and forth through her life, by listening to a vinyl record. It's odd and funny but there's not a lot to it. It's probably not worthy of an Oscar nomination, but it is clever and somewhat amusing (in a weird way).

It was okay Warning: Spoilers
One does have to wonder what kind of criteria the Academy follows at the moment of choosing the nominees for the category of Best Animated Short Film.

More often than not, the choices feel absolutely random, sometimes picking rather forgetable titles while much more impressive, daring works tend to be completely snubbed.

I simply can't tell why this short was even nominated. I won't say it's bad (It isn't), but neither the plot and visuals are particularly remarkable in any way or another.

The premise had a lot of potential, but not much is done with it.

At least it goes directly to the point, without any unnecessary buildup.

It was okay, but could have been more.

The song was nice.

Bad design
injury-6544723 May 2020
Why did they make the character look like a mutated thumb? It's very unpleasant to look at and clashes with the cutesy happy vibe of the film.

It might be ridiculous but I found her little jigglies to be very unsightly and distracting. This really takes away from being able to enjoy the short, because the story isn't a bad one.

I guess I can see why she's single because wow - really a yucky little creature!Off-putting Character Design

not impressed

I don't know why some people are impressed with this short movie, it's not something that you would say " Hey , I didn't know that" or " Oh this may happen for real with me too" something that you didn't expect when you are single, and + some people may live full life. So I will give it 4 starts

Repetitive and uninspired, even for such a runtime

Warning: Spoilers
"A Single Life" is a 2.5-minute animated short film from 2 years ago that managed an Academy Award nomination. It was co-written and directed by Joris Oprins and it is a Dutch production. However, you don't have to worry about not understanding the dialog in this very short film as there isn't any. The only words are English and come from a record that the main and only character keeps playing. This record is some sort of a time machine for her. Unfortunately I must say that I was neither impressed by the animation nor by the contents of this little movie. The story is very repetitive and the new shades added throughout the film hardly offer anything new in terms of drama or comedy. Baffled to see this one really receive an Academy Award nomination. Not worth the watch. Thumbs down and I cannot say that it got me curious about Oprins' other works. i hope he can step things up in the next years and this film was not already his biggest achievement.
