No, it’s not Taylor Swift. Instead, the authors of Penguin’s Argylle novel are revealed to be Terry Hayes and Tammy Cohen.
Forming part of a surprisingly elaborate marketing campaign, early January 2024 saw the release of a novel called Argylle, billed as an “explosive spy thriller that inspired the new Matthew Vaughn film”.
Rather than a traditional tie-in – one of those books that essentially takes a screenplay and turns it into page-turning prose – the book was instead a standalone thriller based on the antics of the spy played by Henry Cavill in the film. In a further post-modern twist, the Argylle novel is credited to Elly Conway, the character played in the movie by Bryce Dallas Howard.
This begged the question: if Conway’s a fictional character, who really wrote the novel? Much speculation ensued, including the quite batty theory that Argylle had been written by Taylor Swift – a...

James Gray is going back to school for his next feature.
“The Lost City of Z” filmmaker will write and direct “Armageddon Time,” a memoir about growing up in Queens, New York, in the mid-1980s. In a twist, Fred Trump, the Queens-based real estate developer who sired Donald Trump, and the current president will appear as characters, although the events will unfold long before there was ever a Trump in the White House.
The movie reunites Gray with Rt Features, the producer of his upcoming sci-fi epic “Ad Astra.” Rt Features’ Rodrigo Teixeira will produce “Armageddon Time.” Gray pitched Teixeira on the idea while they were shooting “Ad Astra.” It draws on his experiences as a student at the Kew-Forest School in Queens. Fred Trump served on the board of the private school and Donald Trump was an alumnus. The school’s principal will be a central character.

One of the greatest American directors working today, James Gray’s classical style is a welcome reprieve in a Hollywood that’s increasingly less interested in mid-budget adult dramas. Following The Lost City of Z, he’s currently in post-production on his Brad Pitt-led sci-fi film Ad Astra, due for a qualifying run later this year and January release, and now a new project has been announced.
In a directorial upgrade for the ages, THR reports that Gray is set to replace Matthew Vaughn on the spy thriller I Am Pilgrim. Based on the Terry Hayes novel, the MGM project follows a former head of an espionage unit in the U.S., who now lives an anonymous life under the radar, and is pulled back into a mission that finds him facing a terrorist.
A first for Gray, the studio hopes this first film will kick off a franchise.

For a second there, it actually looked like the sequel to this year's Kingsman: The Secret Service may not happen. Director Matthew Vaughn has been busy working on the script with Jane Goldman, but has since been linked to helm a number of different projects (including spy thriller I Am Pilgrim), while there were reports about a scuffle between Fox & Lionsgate over the services of star Taron Egerton - who is also set to shoot Robin Hood: Origins next year. Thankfully, the latter situation was resolved last week (per The Hollywood Reporter). Principal photography on Kingsman 2 willl begin in April 2016 (with Egerton, and hopefully Vaughn), while filming on Origins was pushed back to the end of next summer. According to BoxOffice.com Fox have now scheduled the sequel to arrive in theatres on June 16th, 2017. The Secret Service surprised most people by racking up over $400 million at the global...

It's Monday, which means Hollywood is back at work, and a trio of new projects have come onto the table with some solid names attached, so let's take a look. Over at Fox, the studio has snapped up the spec script "Ascension" as a project for Matthew Vaughn to produce and direct. Penned by Shannon Triplett, a visual effects coordinator who also nabbed a producer credit on "Godzilla," this is a sci-fi tentpole about a scientist who goes into hero mode when Earth loses gravity. An interesting concept but one that will sit on the shelf for the moment as Vaughn is making the spy thriller "I Am Pilgrim" next. A project that has been kicking around for years, "L.A. Riots" now has John Ridley (writer behind "12 Years A Slave" and "American Crime," director of "All Is By My Side") attached to helm the movie. Previously attached to Spike Lee and Justin Lin,...

Though his plate would seem to be full at the moment, what with plans for the Kingsman sequel moving forward and his recent attachment to espionage novel adaptation I Am Pilgrim, 20th Century Fox has picked up spec script Ascension for Matthew Vaughn to consider producing, developing and even directing.According to Deadline, no deal has been hatched yet, but the director certainly seems interested. Ascension, a spec script written by Shannon Triplett is being pitched as a large-scale sci-fi disaster movie in which a scientist must save the world when gravity is somehow removed from Earth. Which rather makes us think that the film would be over quickly given how much we rely on gravity to stop us all floating into space and dying. Perhaps they'll shave down the budget by making it that all copies of Gravity are removed from Earth and Sandra Bullock must team up with...

One of the surprise hits of the year has been director Matthew Vaughn’s big screen comic book movie, Kingsman: The Secret Service. The fact that it was a strong film wasn’t a surprise, rather that it took over $410m at the global box office. Very few saw that coming.
Unsurprisingly, 20th Century Fox soon after began to press for a sequel. Furthermore, Vaughn himself confirmed that he was going to make one. He’s thus been working on the screenplay for the next film with Jane Goldman.
Vaughn had said that Kingsman 2 wouldn’t be his next movie, and that he was likely to schedule another project in-between. However, the crammed schedule of Kingsman star Taron Egerton may be leading to a change of plan.

Fresh off Kingsman: The Secret Service, it seems Matthew Vaughn will be staying in the spy genre for a bit longer with his next film. No, not Kingsman: The Secret Service 2 (that’s still coming, don’t worry), but I Am Pilgrim, an adaption of the 2014 best selling debut novel from The Road Warrior, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, Dead Calm, and Payback screenwriter Terry Hayes (you can listen to our interview with Hayes about the book here). Following a veteran spy, codenamed Pilgrim, called out of retirement to tackle a cunning terrorist, production is slated to begin next year. I Am Pilgrim will see Hayes on screen writing duties, and with him currently working on a follow-up novel, we could see be seeing the beginnings of a new franchise. And there’s no better person than Vaughn to potentially kick it off. Of the five movies he has directed, three...

Matthew Vaughn is making another spy movie! Hot off finding strong commercial success with Kingsman: The Secret Service earlier this year, the popular British director is set to helm a big screen adaptation of Terry Hayes' espionage thriller I Am Pilgrim. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he will also produce the film, based on a script adapted by Hayes himself. Apparently, MGM view this as a potential franchise, and production will begin in 2016. Per THR, the story follows “Pilgrim,” code name for a man who doesn’t exist. The adopted son of a wealthy American family, he once headed up a secret espionage unit for U.S. intelligence. Now in anonymous retirement, he is called upon to lend his expertise to an unusual investigation but ultimately becomes caught in a terrifying race against time to save America from a cunning terrorist. Even though he’s busy developing a sequel to Kingsman: The Secret Service, that’s not preventing Matthew Vaughn from delving into other spy-related affairs, as MGM announced this morning that Vaughn will produce and direct the espionage thriller I Am Pilgrim.
Based on the novel by Terry Hayes, the story tracks the adopted son of a wealthy American family, who previously spearheaded a covert espionage operation for the Us government. With the entire Us at stake, it’s a race against the clock to stop the bad guys before America is obliterated.
