Floating towards the waterfall of boredom

Warning: Spoilers
"Das Floß!" or "Floating!" is a German movie that was released last year (2015). The writer and director is Julia C. Kaiser and it is probably one of her most known works. But honestly, this does not say anything positive about her body of work. The film runs for slightly under 90 minutes and even I as a German film buff cannot say that I am familiar with any of the cast members in here. Most of them are young aspiring actors and actresses who yet have to make a name for themselves. I don't think any of them succeeded with this film here. Then again, they also suffered from the really uninspired writing. There were so many characters in this story, but none of them were remotely interesting I must say. Very disappointing. The plot may sound interesting the way it is written here on IMDb about four people being on a boat with one woman and there may have been a claustrophobic component where conflict is unavoidable, but this only applies to a quality movies. This one here is no such work. The plot and story seem very random in my opinion and I cannot say that it got even close to being interesting at all. Camera shots on female characters with focus on their (covered) breasts make this actually a fairly embarrassing approach. People on the internet add random !s when they want to make their statement more significant than it actually is and this is also what the filmmaker tried. It is not a relevant movie whatsoever, not a good character study at all. I truly hope Kaiser can step things up if she decides to keep making films in the future.

Does this ... float your boat?

No pun intended - even though the pun was one I could not miss out on. It's almost like the movie went fishing for it ... ok another one. Don't expect the movie to be a comedy though. We have full on drama here. Situation(s) that will test our main character ... and her love for someone - more than one (another pun).

It is overall a decent effort and look into the human soul and psyche. When you are about to marry someone - you should be sure, that is the person you want to spend the rest of your life with (and/or their life that is). Of course they should be sure also.

Getting on ... a trip is not a bad idea. What you might do on that trip on the other hand ... well it can have repurcussions. Even if nothing actually happens? For you (or her/them) to find out.

Terrible, just terrible

This has to be one of the worst movies I have ever seen. I was pretty disappointed about that, because I generally really like German cinema. The whole time I was watching this film, I kept asking myself "why is everybody acting so awkward?" All the actors just played horribly.

The movie tells the story of a lesbian couple who is about to get married. Both brides get a separate bachelorette party where at some point, of course, things get a little weird. Let's just say, the awkwardness between certain characters made total sense, but strangely enough everybody seemed to be very uncomfortable with each other.

I don't understand what the goal of this movie was. It tried so hard to be deep and complicated, it ended up being the entire opposite. All of the characters lacked any emotional connection. None of them seemed to even like each other and their conversations were extremely boring and forced. A bachelorette party is supposed to be something fun, but here you had these five people who, for some mysterious reason, were basically stuck together. I guess none of them had anyone else to hang out with. But the really sad thing is that not even the brides were really excited about anything. I did not predict a happy marriage.

In other words, do not waste your time on this movie. Germany has better ones to offer.

With a weak script and mediocre acting this movie loses its buoyancy.

When people marry they hatchet their freedom by throwing bachelor parties in a last act of ultimate debauchery and so do Katha and Jana in this mistitled movie. In German it says the raft, a neutral name. The English title Floating! suggests some light fun. However, this movie hovers in between the serious and funny and never seems to commit to one side or the other.

The movie screams debut. This doesn't imply bad. The Dutch movie Zusje(little sister) was a debut movie and was good movie. However, the inexperience tells. Both the script and the actors feel lightweight, with the exception of Julia Becker and, to a lesser degree, Anna Becker. A mediocre script can be saved by good acting, and mediocre acting can be saved by a good script(although less likely) but with both being under par there is little to salvage.

The acting not only suffers from the inexperience of the actors but from the miscasting. Katha gets to enjoy her bachelor's party with four guys on a raft: her younger brother, a school friend, a coworker and a sperm donor. The latter's presence is excused on the ground that it would be nice for Katha to get him to know a little better.

It probably looked hilarious on paper, in practice it is a string of embarrassments as we get to witness the disclosures and confrontations of private mishaps in the past and in the present. Jana in the meanwhile has her own bachelor party, which is mostly virtual as the only one we see is her old lover Susan. Otherwise she drunkenly rambles at Katha through her mobile.

This might all been meant to be funny or it might not, but with Katha being grumpy for most part of the movie and otherwise drunk, just like Jana, you'll never know. It seems to me that grumpy people and drunks cannot carry a movie. Well, unless their is a specific reason for it and done by good actors.

Still there is some redemption. The two main leads at least put in an effort and there are some nice moments between them. But the movie falters on its script and poor acting. A pity.
