The new HBO series “The Gilded Age” hails from “Downton Abbey” creator Julian Fellowes, and much like that hit period series, this one features a lot of characters. Several cadres of characters keep the plot pivoting back and forth between households and prominent locations around 1890s New York, as the show tells a story of New York City on the cusp of change, where the battle between old money and new money — as well as old and new ways of doing things — is being fought.
A mix of veteran actors and actresses balance out some newer talent in Julian Fellowes’ latest fictional show — from “Sex and the City’s” Cynthia Nixon to Meryl Streep’s youngest daughter Louisa Jacobson, who plays a main heroine at the heart of aristocratic New York City.

Elle Fanning is opening up about the pressure in Hollywood to join large franchise films.
The All the Bright Places star told Josh Horowitz on Thursday’s episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast that she doesn’t feel the need to do projects for such brands as Marvel, DC Studios and Star Wars for success in the industry.
She said, “It does something for people, you know, but you also don’t know if they’re gonna work sometimes, which is also scary.”
Fanning said she had previously auditioned for a role in a larger franchise, which she did not name, but didn’t get the part because of her social media presence.
“I didn’t get a part once for something big — and it might not have just been this reason, but this was all the feedback that I heard — because I didn’t have enough Instagram followers at the time,...

Netflix users are issuing warnings for those planning to watch Luckiest Girl Alive.
The new film, which is based on the 2015 novel by Jessica Knoll, follows Mila Kunis’ lead character who is faced with a past trauma related to a horrifying high school shooting.
Those who have watched the 15-certificate film since its release on Friday (7 October) are alerting their Twitter followers to the fact that the film features “harrowing” scenes many might find triggering.
Netflix briefly mentions that Luckiest Girl Alive features “sexual violence” and “threat” at the top of the screen when the film starts – but many users believe this is not enough, and are saying it should be made clearer that the film features “intense scenes of sexual assault”.

Echo Lake Entertainment has optioned Melissa Gould’s memoir “Widowish” to develop it as a TV series, Variety has learned exclusively.
The book tells the story of Gould’s life after the unexpected death of her husband. Left to raise their adolescent daughter on her own, and act as if she could resume life without him by her side, Gould found that she didn’t fit the typical idea of widowhood or meet the expectations of mourning. She didn’t look like a widow or act like a widow, but she felt like one.
The book was an Amazon best-seller and one of BookAuthority’s picks for best grief book of all time. It has been featured in Maria Shriver’s Sunday Paper, Katie Couric’s Wake-Up Call Newsletter, The Gabby Reece Show Podcast, SiriusXM’s Just Jenny show, and other media outlets including Good Morning America.

In celebration of Literacy Month, Popsugar Book Club spoke to seven game-changing authors on the power of books. The insightful conversation, held on Twitter, included Jennifer Niven, Nancy Jooyoun Kim, Nina Lacour, Roshani Chokshi, Morgan Jerkins, and writing duo Christina Lauren.
The power of passing down literacy to later generations is the message Literacy Month stands behind; the written word and the ability to read are the pillars of education and progress. Welcome to September, ladies and gentlemen. With the summer coming to and end, the fall almost upon us, and the Covid-19 pandemic still very much impacting the industry, much is still up in the air. Such is life with the coronavirus holding up much of the film industry. As fitting this weird year, not much has changed since July when I looked at the best of the first half of the year. Mostly, this just means the best is (hopefully) still to come here. We shall see, but just keep in mind that the midpoint of 2020 has been somewhat of a holding pattern, for obvious reasons. Let’s get right down to it. Below you’ll find my top ten of the year so far, along with my awards for the first two thirds of 2020. Here you go folks, and enjoy: 10. Crshd 9. The Outpost 8. Brett Haley wants to make a ton of different kinds of films. That much is clear just looking at the movies he’s made over his short yet productive career. Efforts like I’ll See You in My Dreams, The Hero, Hearts Beat Loud, All the Bright Places, and All Together Now showcase a diverse interest that supersedes any one style in particular. Haley has said as much, including to me last week when we shared a Zoom call to discuss All Together Now. Having moderated a weekend of Q&a events three years ago with him, Sam Elliott, and Laura Prepon, for the opening of The Hero (remember when you could be in the same room with people), we know each other a bit, which hopefully makes the following conversation an easy listen. Brett Haley’s charming 2018 music drama Hearts Beat Loud should have been the toast of Sundance after its festival premiere. It was a sweet, progressive and warm-hearted crowd-pleaser, the kind that the festival has typically become known for launching, harking back to everything from Little Miss Sunshine to Juno. But polite acclaim didn’t lead to buzzy word of mouth which then failed to secure any box office that summer, a sign that for a certain type of feelgood indie, crossing over from Park City to the multiplex has became harder than it once was.

For those who were charmed by writer-director Brett Haley’s incisive microbudget debut “The New Year,” or his Sam Elliott-starring Hollywood fable “The Hero,” or his crowdpleasing father-daughter dramedy “Hearts Beat Loud,” it might initially come as a surprise to see his name attached to two glossy, unabashedly sentimental Netflix teen dramas within the same year: February’s “All the Bright Places” and this week’s “All Together Now.” Unexpected as it may be at first, the director’s abrupt lane change is one that his style ought to be able to accommodate. There’s a pervasive sense of warmth in all of Haley’s films, and he has an ease with melodrama and contrivance and cliché that somehow never betrays a hint of cynicism or schmaltz. His films always feel honest, even when the stories he’s chosen to tell aren’t.
Unfortunately, that is the case with his latest.

Filmmaker Brett Haley doesn’t trade in hip cynicism. The director of such low-key charmers as “The New Year,” “The Hero,” and “Hearts Beat Loud” is interested in telling stories about good-hearted people persevering in the face of tough circumstances. Even his happiest endings are tinged with a believable bit of sadness, but they are still just that: happy endings. His latest, the tender dramedy “All Together Now,”

Soft boys, assemble! since February’s “All the Bright Places” has finally arrived, and it is not holding back. This movie has it all: An affluent teenage introvert who’s desperately waiting for something interesting to happen to him, a mysterious blonde transfer student named Grace Town(!) whose pronounced limp suggests a tragic past, a wistful voiceover track laced with pearls of wisdom like “you are never more alive than when you’re a teenager,” a queer Black best friend character who spends the whole film making out with her girlfriend in the background, so much Beach House on the soundtrack that you can practically feel the sand between your toes (one of the band’s songs even becomes a plot point), and an overreliance on a flimsy metaphor that’s meant to trigger some kind of profound understanding — in this case, the idea that heartbreak causes the same bodily response as physical pain.

Paramount’s plan to tell you more, tell you more about the crucial amorous 1950s-set teen backstory to its iconic 1978 musical, Grease, appears to be coming to fruition. The project, a prequel movie titled Summer Lovin’, went into development last year and has just procured a director in Brett Haley.
Summer Lovin’ is officially moving forward with Haley in the director’s chair, reports Deadline. A surging indie talent for whom the film will serve as a potential mainstream breakthrough, Haley will work off a script by Leah McKendrick, a surging talent poised to break out in her own right. They will be joined here by producers in Temple Hill and Picturestart. Interestingly, the report points to studio enthusiasm strong enough for the project to serve as a potential franchise-launcher.
