Promising premise, but misses more than it hits
Wizard-820 May 2019
A note of caution to anyone who sees the DVD or Blu-ray front cover art and title of this movie, and subsequently thinks they will be getting an action-packed exercise; this is NOT an action movie! The movie instead is, of all things, a wacky comedy. I sort of was prepared for that thanks to the somewhat absurd-sounding plot description on the back of the Blu-ray case, but while I had some preparation, I was all the same disappointed by what I watched. To be fair, the movie gives Antonio Banderas the rare chance to act silly, and his enthusiastic performance is at time infectious. Also, I admit there were a few times when I giggled or even laughed out loud. But the movie as a whole does not work. The main problem is that apart from Banderas, the energy level is often extremely low, and as a result it's hard for any comic sparks to be ignited. Though I feel I should point out that much of the humor is somewhat lazy, familiar, and predictable in nature. The wacky premise should have inspired more and stronger attempts at humor than we actually got. And the plot more often than not moves at a very slow and sluggish pace; you'll soon be telling the movie to simply get on with it. It doesn't help that despite filming on location in Chile, the low budget of the entire enterprise is extremely evident. Despite a few good things to be found, this is one movie you're probably best shying away from.

Death by Llama
nogodnomasters17 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Antonio Banderas is terribly miscast as an aging British rocker, who had a part time accent. While vacationing in Chile, his wife Sheila (Olga Kurylenko) is kidnapped by a group of fishermen looking to get some money for their poor village. The million dollar ransom is not the issue if they can get the inept US government representatives from interfering.

Banderas plays for a group called "Metal Assassins" with their hit song "Teenage A** Patrol." They didn't even try to make it sound good. The film had some funny moments, but was mostly smile funny with overused beer humor.

Guide: Brief swearing and nudity. Sex talk.

What the hell did I just watch?
siderite1 December 2017
Antonio Banderas, Olga Kurylenko and Mark Valley play in this movie based on a book. It is supposed to be a comedy with some social commentary, only it is not funny and most of the time it is offensive to every group it depicts. Antonio Banderas does well, but the role is so much beneath him that I wonder how this movie was even made. And who writes books that are this bad?!

Bottom line: I skipped large portions of it and it was still boring. The jokes were lame, the acting stupid, the story horrendous. This film has nothing redeeming about it, except maybe Olga's cuteness, even it not being enough to save this piece of crap.

Antonio Banderas worst movie ever.
Top_Dawg_Critic14 September 2017
They made the trailer look somewhat interesting and it got me curious so I took a chance not expecting much. Well, it was way worse than I thought. This is by far Antonio Banderas worst movie ever. The directing and location sets were the only salvageable parts of this disaster, everything else especially the acting and writing were garbage high-school drama class quality. Seems to me whoever produced this garbage needed a tax write- off, and they got it. It's a generous 2/10 from me

It is funny because it is so bad
Gordon-1110 September 2017
This film tells the story of a rock legend, who goes on a holiday to Chile with his wife. His wife gets kidnapped, and he has to pay one million dollars ransom. However, the US government stops him from paying the ransom, so he has to use other ways to try to save his wife.

"Gun Shy" is really so ridiculously bad! It knows that it is bad, and there is no attempt to hide how silly, contrived, clichéd or cheesy the story is. The story is so unrealistic that it becomes funny. For example, is the kidnapped victim really going to have a romantic talk on the beach with the kidnapper? The whole film is just so bad that it becomes funny, but hasn't made the elite group of films that is so bad that it becomes good yet.

This one is cringe worthy and I'm embarrassed for Banderas
attipton16 September 2017
Reading the summary and seeing the reviews, I didn't think this movie would be great. I checked it out simply because Antonio Banderas has done some really great work in the past. I understand that his movies aren't all outstanding but I figured he could carry it if he had to...

I was mistaken. This movie was just plain bad. From the plot being laughably thin, the acting completely lacking, the ridiculous stereotypes and last (but certainly not least) the awful singing from Banderas, this movie was just one long cringe.

I am not usually this harsh on most of my reviews but this one definitely deserves the rating I gave it.

Talent wasted
thando-january10 September 2017
Even Banderas couldn't save this attempt at making a movie. Best you wait for it to air on TV or better still, give it a complete pass. There's not a single likable or hateable enough character...it's all so very awful at being very awful, it's like it was made by a group of drug addicts trying hard very hard to afford their next supply. I don't wanna bore anyone by trying to try explain what this motion picture is, in case I get blamed for ruining people's breakfast...lol

Think Low rate TV movie and you are about there
dibnah-112 May 2018
Ok so I quite like B movies and movies done on tight budgets. But boy this is really bad. The script is poor, acting worse still, set pieces... grim. It plays out just like a very cheap cable TV movie or high school play. Definitely the worst movie I have seen in a very long time. I hadnt realised just how bad Antonio is at acting. Seems like many his skills came from the skills of the editor in his previous films if this is anything to go by.

Another lemon on the self of your favorite DVD location club
wildpeace1026 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
So what will attract most people in renting this is the presence of Antonio Banderas and Olga kurylenko.Others will notice the director named Simon West who directed some major action hits in the pass.

The images on the DVD holder makes this look like an action movie but it really isn't.Banderas is an idiotic rock star and Olga is his girlfriend who gets kidnapped.

It's really an awful unfunny comedy. Can't understand why famous actors get involved in something like this.

Nudity:Very, very short scene with a small breasted woman dancing. Blink and you'll miss it. None from Olga.

It made me laugh
jordan22408 May 2022
Definitely doesn't deserve the low rating. Yeah, it's a silly movie, but that's what it's supposed to be, and some scenes had me laughing out loud. My wife just looked at me and wondered what my problem is then went off to bed, so she wasn't a fan. I can imagine the performers had quite a good time with it, especially Banderas. I've seen far worse comedies.

What were people expecting? This was great!
creativedoom24 November 2017
Beware low ratings and subjective reviews of movies, including this one. I gave this 9 stars based on how well the movie delivered on what it promised. It did fantastically.

It was a little bit wacky, but not even close to being over-the-top. All the jokes were original, imaginative, and genuinely funny. The humour didn't rely on being crude or scraping the bottom of the gutter. No foul language or innuendo, except for 5 minutes from one character who suited that brand of humour - yet even that was very tame.

The narrative was consistent and engaging with no plot holes. It didn't test my suspension of disbelief. Except for one fake-out, there were no clichés. Even the fake-out was accompanied by a tasteful and funny joke.

Would watch again. Would show to friends.

Enjoyable, deserves a higher rating
kruizer04-268-18670426 September 2017
I don't understand some of the negative reviews about this movie, and it's low rating is unfair. Antonio's choices of movie projects can be a bit hit and miss, but Gun Shy was a pretty funny movie. Don't expect it to be the best comedy, or anything great in cinema, that is not what this movie is about. It's an easy going hour and half of inoffensive fun. Gun Shy and it's cast and crew are not going to win any Oscars for this, but everything was done well enough to give the viewer a pleasant experience. It's not a deep thinker, and as such does not need to be over critiqued.

At least a 7/10

Has Antonio Banderas lost his mind?
mystiquious7 May 2018
Has Antonio Banderas lost his mind? Or is he going through a mid life crisis? The movie is so stupid it's not even funny. What a waste of time. If they had added Benny Hill music I might have laughed. It's pathetic and because it is hopeless Netflix of course has added it to their ever increasing trash can of a library. Avoid it.

Antonio Banderas what possessed you?
Australian110 September 2017
How can an actor go from playing parts like Desperado, Zorro to this stupid nonsense movie!?

The "Aussie" is portrayed as crude, rude! AN insult to Australians! We must look real bad to the rest of the cinema world for some reason!

The poster itself is misleading! Gun Shy? Who? Antonio held nothing but beer cans throughout the movie! Action Comedy? I expected a lot more. I have seen action comedy movies before which were really entertaining, not this one! I will be generous and give it a 3.

Appallingly unfunny
Leofwine_draca27 June 2018
Warning: Spoilers
GUN SHY is an appallingly unfunny British comedy, shot in Chile with ageing action star Antonio Banderas. It was made by Simon West, who did a much better job of the same year's STRATTON. The film takes the form of an extremely broad comedy, with Banderas apparently channelling Johnny Depp by playing an ageing rock star called into action when his wife is kidnapped while on a trip to Chile. Olga Kurylenko co-stars, and really must be having a word with her agent for landing her in films like this. Banderas staggers and saunters his way through the film and occasionally sings, but none of it is funny, just cringe-worthy. There's no action here, just silly, over-the-top and mannered acting and waste of time plotting. I hated every minute of it.

3 stars for Olga Kurylenko and that's the only reason it got that much! Don't waste your time. Even if the acting was intentionally bad it's still not funny!

Embarrassing
jrneptune23 October 2021
Normally even when I don't like the way a movie is headed I will watch it all just in case there is something redeeming. I can't say I could this time. I am a fan of nearly all of the films done from Antonio Banderas but even if it was supposed to be comedy I did not find it funny.

Insulting? Yes both culturally and institutionally. I hate to see misinformation passed and it abounds in the movie.

I blame the writer mostly and then the director and actors that participated but I guess they were happy with getting paid regardless.

Hard pass for me.

A wonderful movie tailored for Antonio Banderas...
paul_haakonsen6 July 2018
I hadn't even heard of this movie prior to coming to find it by sheer random luck. Well, that might be because I hardly keep up with the movies that Antonio Bandera makes. That being said, don't get me wrong, he does make the occasional good movie every now and again. So I decided to sit down and watch "Gun Shy".

And I am glad that I did, because this actually turned out to be a rather entertaining movie.

I will actually go as far as saying that this is one of the best movies that Antonio Bandera has made in a long time. It was really nice to see him in a movie such as this, because he seemed to fit into the character like a hand in a glove.

"Gun Shy" was driven by a good story and was filled with interesting characters. And they had a fairly good cast together here for bringing the various characters to life on the screen.

The movie definitely had an adequate amount of comedy and action, which made for a good cocktail.

"Gun Shy" is well-worth the time and effort. So if you haven't already seen it, do so if you get the chance.

If You Wanna Rock Out, Try Watching Something Else...
WalkdenEntertainment10 January 2019
Turk (Antonio Banderas) is an aged, old rock 'n roll star. He lives in a beautiful mansion where he refuses to do anything with his life other than walking around his house, angry and frustrated with life. His wife, Sheila (Olga Kurylenko), convinces him to go on holiday so he can clear his mind and she has a chance to explore an unknown destination.

The holiday destination: Chilli.

The only trouble with this relaxing holiday is that shortly after arriving, Turk's wife gets kidnaped while sightseeing the local animals and exploring nature. Will Turk be able pay the random or gain the confidence to do something heroic like save his wife?

The main character, Turk (Antonio Banderas), is a character that is downright childish, selfish and immature. Who wants to follow someone like that for 1hr & 30mins?!? Heck, even within the first 10mins of watching the film I was already feeling the struggle and regrets of pressing the play button. The film is loaded with poor, unlikable characters- every character in Gun Shy is annoying and unfunny. When you see what kind of person Turk is, I'm amazing that his wife actually loves him.

Gun Shy is directed by Simon West, a director who in the past has directing such films as Con Air, Tomb Raider & The General's Daughter. Considering his directional history, this film will shock many movie lovers. Needless to say, West's recent films have not had the strong, fun favour that he once had. Some of his recent work includes Stolen, Wild Card and now Gun Shy...

Overall it's disappointing to witness this low point in Antonio Banderas & Olga Kurylenko careers. Both actors are by far greater than this film. Gun Shy is a silly film with jokes that never score a home run and many moments that are delivered in a poor, tasteless manner. Sorry folks- this is one to avoid: a film that I could never recommend to any movie lover.

Better than I expected
johnnygrif15 January 2022
I actually don't understand why this only has 4.3 stars. I think it deserves betted. I mean if some of the movies from Will Ferrell have more than 3 stars, come on.

This movie has a decent cast. Each does a good job. The story is entertaining. The humor is well placed and actually pretty funny. Is the movie ridiculous? Absolutely. But it's fun. And even all the scenes during the credits are pretty funny.

I guess to each their own.

Freedom0602866 September 2021
Not a great movie, but I did like the scenes with the Llamas.

Antonio Banderas has performed very well in other roles, but this one did not suit him. Olga Kurylenko was okay for her role though.
