What A Rare Find !
suzy-8867731 July 2018
I was randomly sifting through films on Amazon Prime and came across this title. Thought I'd give it a whirl and was so pleased I did! I knew it had me hooked when I stopped fast forwarding (it's only a ten second jump) very early in the film. There is something about the scenery and 'feel' of the island that made it almost mystical. They haven't overdone the CGI; the dragon is realistic and beautiful. The acting is superb and the music lovely. The song Mira sings towards the end is magical and beautifully conveys the deep longing in her heart. If you like dragons, fantasy, and romance, this is a must.

Don't overlook this - it is well worth watching
ravensongcreek10 March 2018
It would be so easy to overlook this movie. The trailer alone is enough to turn you off as being a predictable sweet romance. It is that. But then it isn't. There's a simplicity and beauty and .... dare I say it ....humility to this movie that is quite simply captivating. It's disarming in its simplicity. It's beautifully filmed, beautifully acted and the music is magical. There are beautiful films that almost seem to parade their beauty: Look at me, they proclaim, look how gorgeous I am. There is none of that in this movie. It simply is. Unpretentious, yet moving. I would say this baby sister to the big sister charm of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. And that is a credit to both films - so completely different though they are.

Storytelling still exists!
onestepfromdestiny12 August 2018
Is this the "best" movie ever(?)... no! However (because my English grammar school teacher informed me never to start a sentence with 'But'), it does remind you that storytelling isn't a lost art.

This is a beautiful fable; a fantasy (like 'Never Ending Story') that you can be a part of. You know what's coming; you know what happens next... but you want to see the creators 'tell' the story. Love isn't lost...

Beautiful Blue Lagoon meets Beauty and the Beast sweet romance
Bofsensai24 March 2019
Just gotta add in another review to highly recommend this adorable romantic fantasy, as, sadly, would seem was big screen distribution marginalised and so criminally underseen on release, thus seeming to have been not only a 'failure' at the box office (to date making less than half of its 18 million budget), but that likely because it didn't get its surely deserved viewing outting on the big screen, on which then its clearly, gorgeous, high production values, cinematography (Sergey Trofimov) - complete with the occasional obvious 3D effects, now all lost - would have been the best way to see this visual treat.

In effect a sort of 'Blue Lagoon' meets 'Beauty and the Beast' concoction - (although, on the box, billed as more modern / relevant 'Game of Thrones' meets the latter ...!), it's been a long time that I've seen a fantasy deliver its romance so believingly, and for a change, gently so through non-frantic pacing, giving plenty of time to enjoy the visuals; sets (dragon lair island geology particularly inspired), costumes (topping and tailing the tale), and besides the eponymous creature rendered really quite believingly realisstc, with even, for a change, a leading handsome hunk, emoting well to deliver his character's bewildered burdens* (so: kudos to Matvey Lykhov, in what could have otherwise been an easily wooden / mischaracterised role). * although, well, yes, true, some of the Russian (anti-feminst?) reputation of (our?) 'men are just bad tempered but misunderstood beasts, but must still be tolerated / loved, despite ..' did occasionally seem to intrude .. but what the heck, it's an opposite's attract, love conquers - and tames - all trope, innit?

In short this is a gorgeous sweet and innocent romance: yes, innocent; despite what might otherwise be made of the dvd box blurb synopsis: "In time, Princess Mira (Maria Poezhaeva) learns the truth which both shocks and excites her .." (ohh! - for nevertheless, never fear (parent?*) as throughout no inapparopriate 'naughtiness' ever inferred!) and so sweet - almost as to be verging on over-egged at the close ... but if you like your romance simple and syrupy, this is a top entry into the genre niche.

*P.S. Oh, so also for the younger audiences, also complete with cute critter sidekick, but again, for a nice change, without any cleverdick 'spokeness' attitude that those on the other side of the world usually always tediously imbue theirs with: you surely know what I mean, Disney and Pixar ....!

Good enough
PennyReviews24 May 2021
On Drakon is actually quite good. The whole mythology was well crafted and nicely presented. The settings and costumes helped a lot with it, as they looked original and not cheap. The CGI were decent and did not ruin it too. As for the story, was pretty nice, predictable, but had the fairy tale feeling to it throughout it. The performances were good too.

A Beautiful Russian Fairytale
arbitonandson12 September 2017
This was a stunning movie. It felt like a fairy tale from old Russia told through beautiful imagery and storytelling. As a non Russian speaker - the visuals and acting were only enhanced by the Russian language that sounded almost poetic and added to the romantic feel of the movie.

The cinematography was lovely and fit perfectly with with the story and the Russian actors were perfect for their roles. Their facial expressions truly brought the story to life.

It is nice to see Russia can make such movies and Hollywood could learn a thing or two from them !

Beautiful and pure fairy tales
tgywc15 April 2020
Some people take evasion, distance, and strangers to avoid hurting each other; some people, like the previous female owners, enjoy the beauty of love while thinking about the chance to escape from the island. But love dispels all these fears and finds the fairytale beauty.

Wow!
kayspam17 June 2017
This was a perfect romantic feel-good movie. The camera work was beautiful. The special effects were wonderful; the fantastical interacted with the real seamlessly. The plot was great, I loved the transition from folk tale to 'reality.' I especially liked the development of the two main characters, Mira most of all. Her initial introduction had me thinking she was going to be a brat through-out and I was pleasantly surprised.

Fun and Unpretentious Fairy Tale Romance
zhenyaskon27 September 2021
Is this a great movie? No. But I sure did have a good time watching it anyway.

The plot here is based on two tropes: one very, very old (dragon captures princess and knight comes to rescue her) and one fairly recent (brooding supernatural pretty boy struggles with his instincts so as not to hurt the girl he has fallen in love with). These are two interesting concepts to combine, but together in a PG movie they don't provide a lot of ground for really deep, thought-provoking filmmaking. And luckily, the director and crew understood that: the strength of this movie, I think, is that it doesn't try to be anything it's not and focuses on delivering the story beats you expect in the best way possible.

Every inch of the story is predictable. The backstory of the characters is barely explored, aside from the lore about dragons as a species. There's a bit of heavy-handed symbolism at times. But who cares? We came here to see a princess fall in love with a (literally) hot dragon boy, and that's what we're getting. The acting is good enough that the characters' emotional journey comes off as believable, in a fairy-tale way. The fantastic setting - an island made of dragon bones - and Slavic-folk-inspired costumes are beautiful. Worldbuilding details are woven into the dialogue and environmental storytelling in a way that feels rich and doesn't patronize the viewer too much (though there are also some exposition monologues). A lot of attention was paid to color and framing to create some really beautiful shots. The CGI doesn't feel to awkward or heavy-handed. And look at the cheekbones on this guy! Look at the abs! It's not a *good* movie exactly, but it is a *fun* movie for a certain type of person.

Were you the "dragon kid" at your elementary school? Does this premise sound intriguing to you? If so, you're in luck, because this movie is going to give you everything you want and nothing you don't want. If not, you should probably skip it.

Impressive!
DansLeNoir5 January 2020
The acting, the music and the legend were very pleasant. But dubbing reduced the quality of the film. But it was a very impressive love. Although the story was cliché there were certain differences. The scenes and colors were beautiful. Mira's last song scene was very impressive. I was very curious about the book.

Moving until it turns cheesy
blumdeluxe19 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
"Dragon" is a Russian film, telling the fairy-tale of Mira, a noble daughter that falls for the dragon, who kidnaps her during her wedding ceremony, bringing out the human characteristics that he still kept.

The movie is to a large extent based on emotions, the love of the main characters, the fear from the dragon and so on.. It is thus very easy to connect with the characters and you do hope for a Happy end after the bumpy ride they have to face. Also, you can see that the film has had some budget, the set design doesn't look cheap and has a somewhat realistic look.

Unfortunately, many times "Dragon" goes beyond cheesy. You can barely count the numerous occasions in which deeply romantic dialogues are paired with meaningful gestures. Sadly, the movie loses its sense of realism thereby. There's nothing to say against a romantic movie but there are multiple ways to achieve this more subtle than it was done here.

All in all this is a movie for lovers and those who are searching for it. For some romantic action with your partner this is probably great. Otherwise it is a question of taste.

A Wonderful Surprise - A Romance Movie in a Dragon Suit
AntoineMDevine1 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I added this to my Amazon Prime Watchlist based on the "Dragon" aspect of the title. I thought I was going to be watching a "kill the dragon" film, and got an poignant, epic romance instead. Getting what was up seconds after the girl woke up in the cage, I stuck with it because I felt there was a quality there to be appreciated. Boy was I right. Que the tissue at the end, I have to admit. The shot of him falling morphing into the boat was pure magic, and added to the emotion of the moment. I'm not a big romance fan, but I have to recommend this film for surprising me with the plot, and presenting a beautifully told story beautifully.

Beauty and the Dragon
kosmasp16 April 2021
I mean even if you don't know where this decides to go, you can see it coming from miles away (which I reckon could be a pun considering .. the mentioned dragon). The story isn't new and it will depend on your threshold when it comes to romantic movies, what you will make of this.

It really can be fun to watch, but it has all the tropes and predictabilities you probably already know. Good special effects too. While it is aimed at a certain group and audience ... that doesn't mean it has to be a bad thing. If you like a decent fable or two ... knock yourself out.

Precise Portrayal of Russian Culture in Denial Warning: Spoilers
This movie is a great example of a toxic relationship that is so prevalent in the Russian culture. The woman is abused, saved then abused again, yet she gifts unconditional love that "saves" the marriage. This movie completely romanticized the idea of a woman turning a boy into a man. Her biggest reward is a child. As a human she did not contribute to humanity other than helping a sick man fight his insecurities. Classic Russian culture female oppression and perpetuality of a man's inability to be responsible for his own actions. The scape goat is a rough, cruel history and the environment Russian culture endured for hundreds of years. The dragon is an unloved child with a broken childhood. Boohoo! Poor Russian men. It is ok if they beat their wives. They had a bad mother. Pathetic!!! Too sad so many Russian women fall for it.

Dragon twilight
I am dragon was directed by Indra Dzhendubaev and tell the story of a princess named Miroslavia(Marina Poezzhaeva)who is arranged to be married to a man named Igor(Petr Romanov) but on the day of their wedding A dragon appears and snatches away Miro she eventually wakes up on a mysterious island where she meet a man who she name Arman(Matvey Lykov).she feels with his help they can escape the island from the dragon only problem is Arman is the dragon,But that might not necessarily be a problem. The story is basically your telling of beauty and the beast where you have a human that falls in love with a monster, The monster keeps the woman trapped and there's a "hero" on the way to rescue her but she might just not necessarily want to be rescue. There is that general feel however it does have a good time with this concept to it almost comes off under that category of teen Romance sappiness like twilight. It's not necessarily that deception like one mod charge scene where the music just doesn't feel right and honestly feels like a modern teen drama because the romance between Miro and Arman seems genuine they actually take time to build it up. Melo doesn't care that he a dragon after a while there's frames in between the gaps add that to the story. Miro and Arman are the focus all the other caregiver just won't push the sideline. Miroslavia she's she's kind, fun , Playful and she actually has a tough mentality she's not helpless damsel crying the entire time she has sore she hasn't had it to. Armin doesn't really seem like he has much to his character at first, he does get more to his character once you know his story. Though at the same time you can tell like he's still has kind of that Edward look where you just have a good looking guy with his shirt off showing his muscles of for the audience. Music is rather good as well as the visuals especially on the island at first glance it doesn't really look like there's much to the island but there are beautiful shots of the water as well as the sky as well as design actually being made from the remains of an elder dragon. And the effects of the dragon are pretty decent, it not Smaug be it's good. One visual though you kind a wish that you saw a bit more, the building in between the majority of the movie takes place on the island you don't really cut back to Igor all that much. You don't really even see the town in disarray like the king being distraught about his daughter missing or even Igor saying he will go get her, you don't have anything like that he just shows up on the water.

In rUSSIA, actor replaces CGI.
daniel-mannouch24 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I am Dragon is some Russian arthouse romance fantasy stuff from 2015. Whilst some CGI looks a bit janky, the rest of the film is carried on quite comfortably by lush art direction and a decent score. The story is kind of Cast Away meets Beauty and the Beast, all with the framing of a Russian folk tale.

I am Dragon has a unique look and a director's vision is definitely evident. There are some phonetic issues with the English dub, however there's the original Russian soundtrack as a DVD option, so no big deal.

The only thing really wrong with I am Dragon is the predictability in it's storytelling. It's exactly how any other disney fairy tale would play out, albeit a little more Grimm than usual. But the story does have its moments and the overall style is very impressive. For one curious watch, i'd say it's worth it.

Best Fantasy Film I've See In Ages.
qtkt1813 January 2018
This film was amazing! I am really excited about this one because it's so rare to find really good fantasy films these days. So this one is a gem. The plot is excellent, with well developed characters and amazing backstory. You find yourself completely wrapped up in the narrative and even on the edge of your seat a few times. It is also relatively clean, which is a relief. It has a few mature moments, but nothing like a certain popular fantasy series with dragons that I'm still mad about because the content was so bad... never mind. Sore spot. The Russian language is also very fun to listen to. It has a sound to it that really adds something to the film and I could listen to it all day. The acting is top notch and the special effects are very well done too. All in all, I highly recommend this film to any and all fantasy fans. 10 out of 10 stars!

An unusual and surprisingly good film
Snootz20 January 2019
When I went into this I was expecting a typical "dragon" film, nothing special. I certainly didn't expect to rate it 10 stars.

Beautiful sets. Wonderfully-done but non-obtrusive CGI. Wonderful story with heart and emotion. It is a Russian film and somewhat slow-moving, focusing almost entirely on the characters. But it offers everything a quality movie should offer. In short, it's just excellent.

Artistically, from the actors chosen to the costumes to the sets-- it is nearly flawless. The story line remains true all the way through. I would watch this again in a heartbeat, which is the highest praise I can give a film.

I was somewhat disappointed to see it "only" has 6.9 stars average at this time, but I realize this won't be everyone's cup of tea. For me though... this was a wonderful work that is everything such a movie should be. (If anyone doubts the sincerity of my rating, feel free to check my other reviews where I will not hesitate to rake firey coals over a poorly done film.) I believe this is one of the best films I have seen in quite some time. Maybe I was "just in the mood" for this today. Or maybe it is proof that some people still know how to make a great flick.

Pleasantly surprised
mrvino1514 June 2022
You know what, I was pleasantly surprised when I watched this. It popped up on my Chromecast and I went here to see what it was about. People recommended it so I thought I'd give it a watch, and I enjoyed it. It was low budget of course, 18 mil, and you could tell. But the story was enjoyable.

I won't tell you what the story reminds me of but you'll probably pick up on it as you get further into it. It had great locations! Great atmosphere. I love the "history" behind the ritual, etc. I thought the girl was slightly a bit too immature but I know they did that on purpose.

Anyhow, I'd give it a watch! It's not some grand breaking cgi kind of movie but the story is the basis and it actually watches pretty fast.

I hope you enjoy! :) Btw, if you do, there's a song that rolls through some of the end credits. There's a cute little scene at the end of that you might like as well. Lol.

Russian fantasy romance
Leofwine_draca14 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I AM DRAGON is a cheesy fantasy romance feature from Russia. The story is about a woman who is led to be sacrificed to a dragon, only to find herself lost in a remote location with a mysterious man for company. The twist is somewhat obvious, but what really lets this film down is the cheap, digital, greyed-out staging which makes it look pretty boring and robs the visuals of their impact. The one good thing it has going for it is that the CGI dragon sequences are done quite well, but the rest is slow and dragged out rather painfully.

Great non hollywood film
paulsnellps25 October 2018
This is a superb film. Ok it is Russian so is in subtitles but seriously give it a chance...at least as long as you are watching you won't miss any dialogue. But this is a really magical fantasy film. The premise is just simply awesome and its well executed. The special effects are more than adequate and I think the directors though maybe limited with finances wanted to make a beautiful story look simply beautiful. This film is destined to be a cult classic especially for dragon lovers. Forget Unicorns...Dragons are where it's at.

......Beauty and the Dragon.
justinosayi26 August 2021
It has some Nice CGIs. Some areas of the movie doesn't feel polished. I sometimes felt that the story was like a reimagination of "Beauty and the Beast". The movie felt too long and it had unnecessarily scenes and dialogs, it also felt like the director and producer weren't been straight to the point, at the very least. But i would recommend the movie to anyone to watch, i think its interesting overall.

Not that bad
Gelaos12 June 2019
I found about On-drakon thanks to one video on YouTube. I haven't seen any non-Czech or non-western fairy tale for quite some time, so I decided to give this film a chance

Cinematography and CGI are good, the music is great, actors OK,everything else is mediocre at best. Romantical scenes I either endured or skipped them altogether, the rest wasn't bad.

Cinematography + music + fact, that it could have been much bigger crap = 5/10.

Who love the twilight can't miss it.
g-8787730 April 2020
A twilight story can be made into a Russian epic, hhhhh, it's really interesting and attractive. Picture editing and OST and male main voice are too right taste, watching the movie experience is very good. The special effects rendered the game, the art director gave me full credit, the plot was just right, and it made me scream.
