2 Iconic Meetings
ThomasDrufke17 November 2014
Gotham has had it's fair share of geek out moments, but tonight gave us two really big meetings. Unfortunately both weren't as great as they were made out to be. Whether or not Harvey Dent was brought in too early or not is a different discussion, but my beef lies with the fact that he's twenty years older than Bruce. It just seems like they brought Harvey in for more viewers and not to serve the purpose of the story. Surely there's someone else who can further the Wayne murder mystery a bit that isn't Gotham's most famous DA.

With that being said it was a solid episode. I really enjoyed the Bruce-Selina dynamic. In fact it was one of the few times where I liked that the attention wasn't on the main characters. There "you walk quietly" lines were a bit forced but I think Selina and Bruce' personalities were on display beautifully tonight. I like the fact that they know each other long before costumes as it was a welcomed change to the mythos. Even the villain of the week at least had to do with the Falcone-Mooney rivalry. It didn't necessarily further that storyline but it at least tied in.

Penguin was as creepy as ever sniffing his way around Gotham. I thought the theme that they decided to play was brilliant and perfectly fit his character and I would like to hear more of it. The Riddler scenes were brutal to watch. I thought his cameos the first few weeks were fun but it's just out of place with the rest of the show at this point. We didn't get much of Bullock this week but we were introduced to Harvey Dent. Again I think the writers want to fit as many nods to the comic books as possible and bypass what actually make sense for the show. I didn't mind the coin flipping but to already show Harvey's dark side was too much. Make us care about the character before you give us a reason to question him.

As far as the last minute twist goes, I actually liked it. Not because of the actual scene itself but because it makes sense now. Barbara leaving Jim last week was so random that it almost ruined that episode. I'm interested to see where this story goes.

+Bruce & Selina

+Villain at least related to the story arc

+Penguin's theme

+Last second twist

-Dent's crazy side

-Why is he 20 years older than Bruce

-Riddler is unbearable

Harvey Dent but much less Harvey Dent.

Warning: Spoilers
Harvey Dent is actually introduce in this episode to find leads in Wayn's murder case which he wasn't much involved...maybe we should wait more..

The story line (which was intriguing, though) was something else, acting completely impressive...

But about the whole episode I like it, I believe what's about this show just begin, crime, thriller which I do really expect from this TV-series.

Gotham must keep this level...

My vote 9/10.

Warning: Spoilers
It lacked the great violence of last week's episode, and I'm still loathing Jada Pinkett-Smith's 'acting', but I'm still watching. I'm in agreement with those who think that far too many of the iconic villains have been introduced way too early, Penguin should basically been given at least a season to himself, with the likes of Nygma or Dent portrayed as being similar ages to Bruce and Selina, allowing their psychoses to be examined properly, rather than shoehorned in. But now that we have the characters, Dent's sudden flash of near-murderous rage would have worked better if we'd seen more of him as 'Mr Nice Guy' to begin with, but his use of the double headed coin as a trick to help others rather than as a cheat for himself was a nice touch. Bruce and Selina interacted well, and we saw Bruce already beginning to explore the path that will ultimately lead to the Batcave and the Bat-suit, while at the same time taking a misstep that allows Selina to explain just how dangerous an undertaking it will be! The swimming pool scene was kind of dumb though, why Bruce had to train fully dressed escapes me. The bomber was portrayed as having initially been an idealist of some sort, so his building a nail bomb to take out the guards at the munitions factory kind of jarred, personally I considered that more violent than last weeks fistfights. Penguin's discovery of Fish's 'weapon' and Ms Mooney's destruction of a large quantity of Falcone's cash reserves were interesting developments, hopefully that story will continue to hold the interest, Barbara is becoming increasingly disappointing as a character; it's one thing to run away from a traumatising experience, it's another thing again to run straight back to a former lover! Lastly, an appeal to the showrunners; I don't want to see pre-teens sucking face, please. On the other hand, DO NOT make Bruce Wayne too inhibited to take Selina up on her offer!

I (sorta) believe in Harvey Dent

Warning: Spoilers
Coming on stage a tad earlier than I'd expected, the titular Mr. Dent makes an impression in what ends up being more of an extended cameo. He's laid out here (appropriately enough) in two dimensions, setting up a potentially interesting new dynamic in Gotham. I do think they revealed his darker side a bit too early, but it has the proper context to give him the right shading.

The primary focus of the episode, however, is on the continued crime family politics and the budding relationship between Selina Kyle and Bruce Wayne. The reasons for Selina's stay at Wayne manor are beyond convoluted, but I enjoyed seeing the two of them building that dynamic that will come to define them both.
