One of the more fascinating aspects of “American Symphony” is that both Oscar- and Grammy-winning musician Jon Batiste and his wife Suleika Jaouad, the bestselling author of “Between Two Kingdoms,” would have made compelling documentary subjects at any point in their careers. It just so happens that when the former “Late Show with Stephen Colbert” band leader had the idea to recruit his “The First Wave” collaborator Matthew Heineman to make a film about his symphony’s Carnegie Hall debut, the Oscar-nominated director fell upon more poignant material than they all could have imagined.
A month into production, Batiste became the first musician to be nominated in seven different Grammy categories. That same day in November 2021, Jaouad began treatment for leukemia after years of being in remission. “It became an even broader aperture of what a documentary of this period of time would be. And we had to decide, all three of us,...

In 2021, when Jon Batiste received as many as eleven Grammy award nominations, a lot of articles came out about the man. Some of them hailed him as a legend for achieving such a feat; some compared him with the likes of someone as huge as Taylor Swift; and then some appeared salty about Batiste getting nominated for a classical song. The reason for the latter was Batiste not being a conventional classical musician, per se. In Netflix’s American Symphony, we have a scene where Batiste reads out all those articles in a tone of mockery. The scene cuts to a toilet door, and we hear Batiste still making fun of the articles. That scene alone speaks volumes about the documentary, which is inarguably one of the best that has come out of the Netflix stable this year. When I dissect a film under the critic’s lens’, I never...

A celebration of art, resilience and the mutability of the human spirit, Matthew Heineman’s American Symphony never feels like it’s quite the documentary that its director originally intended it to be. Nor does it tell the story that featured star Jon Batiste presumably hoped for it to chronicle. But it’s all the more joyful and emotionally resonant for those deviations.
American Symphony is a concert film, a love story and, if you’re prone to embracing metaphors — and it’s right there in the title — as strangely patriotic a tale as you’ll ever hope to see: a snapshot of America’s protean emergence from the Covid pandemic, as the country charged forward despite trauma.
Beginning in early 2022, American Symphony finds Batiste at a crossroads.
Still best known as the bandleader on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Batiste has an exploding career, with 11 Grammy nominations and...

‘Little House on the Prairie’ Star Melissa Gilbert Sticks to a Budget: ‘I Was Reckless in My Spending Habits’
Arngrim enjoyed working on Little House on the Prairie. However, she was ready to leave the show as the seventh season approached. In her book, Confessions of a Prairie B****, she says her character’s storylines became less interesting. Arngrim’s character, Nellie, was a mean girl, but she became mellow after marrying on-screen husband Percival Dalton (played by the late Steve Tracy). Arngrim wasn’t happy with the way things were going.

What do you get for the father who has everything? He already has every power tool on the market, season tickets to see his favorite teams, and enough cool techy toys to last him a lifetime.
