As Halloween approaches, U.S. audiences consistently demonstrate an increased appetite for horror content. Historically, TV show demand within the horror genre surges each October, and 2023 is anticipated to be no exception. The chart below shows demand peaks for horror TV series during the months of October in the last years.
The fluid nature of the entertainment sector ensures that the horror genre remains ever-evolving. Within this genre, audience preferences shift, as new shows introduce trends and captivate viewers, while interest in others wanes. A case in point is the burgeoning popularity of horror-comedy shows.
In the first quarter of 2021, this sub-genre accounted for 10.8% of the total horror show demand. Fast forward to two and a half years later, and its market share has risen to 17.4%. Contrastingly, suspense horrors, the frontrunners in the genre, have seen their demand slip from 72.6% to 66.4% during this timeframe.
Historically positioned at contrasting ends, horror and comedy converge,...

The Czech film The Pack and Slovakia’s Summer Rebels will be vying for the main prizes at the gathering. The International Film Festival for Children and Youth (Zlín Film Festival), the oldest and largest film festival for children, has revealed the competition titles for its 60th-anniversary edition, which has been postponed to 4-10 September, owing to the pandemic. "Youth-orientated or coming-of-age films are increasingly in the lenses of filmmakers, and they are being found not only at festivals such as the Zlín Film Festival, but also at Sundance-type film events. This year's Zlín youth competition also offers strong stories in which young people reach a new stage in their lives, but some are also in borderline situations in their fights against contemporary society," says the festival’s artistic director, Markéta Pášmová, about the competition line-up. In the International Competition of Feature Films for Children selection is the Brazilian film Monica and.

“The only absolute in history is change,” said the Victorian historian Lord Acton. He might have been talking about the streaming platforms’ current international strategies. Since they launched internationally, Netflix and Amazon’s focus and priorities have been in constant evolution. Current pressures – evolving demographies, new regulation, new competition, still untapped growth – mean that re-engineering won’t stop any time soon.
On Jan. 23, as the Natpe Miami conference wound down, Amazon Prime Video announced out of Miami four new Latin American Amazon Original series: Lucía Puenzo’s “La Jauría” (“The Pack”), “Colonia Dignidad,” produced by Diego Guebel; Daniel Burman and Sebastián Borensztein’s “Iosi, The Repentant Spy”; and Andrés Wood’s “News of a Kidnapping.”
The announcement says much about Amazon Prime Video’s priorities, and the state of the streamer business in Latin America. Five takeaways:

As Poland prepares for its closeup, with the introduction of a 30% cash rebate earlier this year, the local industry is gearing up to show the world how much it has to offer. Easily accessible from anywhere in Europe, the country boasts diverse locations, highly skilled crews, and a rich movie-making tradition.
Even the lack of incentives in years past has become something of a competitive advantage. “The fact that these locations have yet to be extensively seen in international productions provides the most coveted treasure: unique, evocative locations,” says Lori Balton, of the Location Managers Guild Intl., who describes visiting fairy-book castles, Gothic churches, and Brutalist modern structures on a visit to Poland.
Poland has sandy beaches skirting the Baltic Sea in the north, as well as spectacular mountain ranges in the south. Pockets of the Polish countryside are virtually pristine. “There are still places you can go and there...

Mipcom remains the biggest international TV get-together of the year, and that makes Cannes in October the place where the industry takes stock. How programming is made, bought and sold is changing, as is the array of platforms that carry content. Here are takeaways from Mipcom 2019.
Good Buzz – but No Title Dominates
No show rocked Mipcom the way that “Killing Eve” or “Years and Years” did at past MipTVs. But then, as non-English-language shows (“Money Heist”) and formats (“The Good Doctor”) break out to huge audiences, buyers can be forgiven for having a more diffuse focus. Shows with good word of mouth in the Mipcom market ranged far and wide, from “Normal People,” a love story part-directed by Oscar-nominated Lenny Abrahamson, to “La Jauría” (“The Pack”), a Fabula/Fremantle production and gender crime thriller; from animated pop history anthology “We Are Family,” from France’s TeamTo, to Japan’s “Nagi’s Long Vacation,...

Cannes — Produced by Chile’s Fabula, headed by Pablo and Juan de Dios Larraín, and Fremantle, and showrun by Lucía Puenzo (“The German Doctor”), “La Jauria” (The Pack) cuts excruciatingly to the chase.
In its very first scene, a teen girl student sits down, back to the wall, before her male drama teacher who is video-taping the class . “Pretend I’m your boyfriend,” he enthuses off camera. “Pronounce an ‘A,’” he goes on. She doesn’t know how to react but does. until, coached by her teacher, she seems to be groaning in orgasm. When the girl leaves the class, she goes straight to the washroom, sits down and bursts into tears.
The teacher’s gross abuse sparks a student takeover of the elite school in Santiago de Chile. When its leader, 17-year-old Blanca Ibarra, goes missing, a gender-based crime specialist police unit formed by Elisa Murillo and Olivia Fernandez...

The prizes come off the back of the Grolsch People’s Choice Award at Toronto’s Midnight Madness.
Produced by Carlos Juárez at Bilbao-based outfit Basque Films in co-production with Barcelona’s Mr. Miyagi, Gaztelu-Urrutia’s debut offers a harsh survival parable of power human relationships in a dystopic multi-floor dungeon prison. The Czech director prepares his fiction feature debut, a coming-of-age bullying drama. Filming has begun on The Pack, fiction feature debut from up-and-coming Czech director and Famu graduate Tomáš Polenský, written by Irena Kocí. Set in the world of youth ice hockey, the story follows David, a 16-year-old goalkeeper who suffers from diabetes. He strives to succeed, but as an outsider in the team, he becomes a target of mounting bullying. “The injustice, humiliation and hurt keep piling up, one over the other, not unlike the spiraling scars etched into the ice by skate blades,” the film’s synopsis elaborates. “Rivalry is a natural part of all sports environments. That said, it must never leave the boundaries of fair play; if it does, healthy competitiveness can get out of hand, giving way to the ‘law of the pack’, with brute force becoming the only value,” says Polenský who himself spent...

2019 Cannes and the second half of the year catch Chile in the throes of huge change and a fairly exemplary evolution. Already, new paradigms seem fairly clear.
Chilean cinema is “director-driven, about different conversations” with audiences, says Fabula producer Juan de Dios Larraín.
Marking perhaps the two biggest Chilean titles set to bow over the second half of the year, Pablo Larraín’s “Ema,” with Gael Garcia Bernal, is a dance-spangled melodrama, about new contemporary family dynamics. “Araña,” sold at Cannes by Film Factory Ent. and from Andrés Wood, begins to trace the roots of a new nationalism from Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship to the present.
That auteurist focus will remain, and, as the battle for success in an Ott world becomes a battle for talent, see Chile reach out to premium auteurs outside the country. One case in point: Argentine cineast Lucía Puenzo (“The German Doctor”), recruited by Fabula...

This weekend’s third-best U.S. screen average of the year for “Gloria Bell,” which he produced, or the Oscar last for “A Fantastic Woman,” both point in the same direction: Arguably, no producer in Latin American has been so successful in the last decade as Juan de Dios Larraín.
The Ibero-American Mayahuel Larraín will now receive at Mexico’s Guadalajara Festival merely underscores that suggestion. Why is another matter. Prizes are a “consequence not a cause,” Juan de Dios Larraín argues. Variety digs deeper:

Guadalajara, Mexico — This week, Mexico’s Guadalajara Festival will honor Chile as its guest country. That serves as further recognition of an extraordinary 15 years after the so-called Newest Chilean Cinema broke out at 2005’s Valparaíso Festival with Matías Bize, Sebastián Lelio and Alicia Scherson bowing first features.
During that stretch, Chile, just the seventh-largest country in Latin America with an 18 million population, has punched in international terms far above its weight, winning major prizes at Cannes, Sundance, Berlin and Venice, and breaking out to sizable box office on select titles abroad. Last year Sebastian Lelio’s “A Fantastic Woman” won him and producers Pablo and Juan de Dios Larraín an Oscar.
Now, however, Chile’s top talent is crossing over into TV, as TV producers return to cinema. The wall between both is fast coming down.

Czech Republic/Latvia co-production “The Pack” is at Busan’s Asian Project Market seeking the remainder of its $1.4 million budget, having raised more than $400,000 already.
The film will follow a 16-year-old diabetic ice hockey player who deals with bullying on the team. Director Tomas Polensky, who has shot a six-minute pilot for the film, has personal experience of the sport. His sister, Alana Polenska, is the captain of the Czech national woman’s ice hockey team, and Polensky has been an ice hockey player for 16 years. “I know the environment well,” Polensky told Variety.
“I experienced bullying from both sides, from the position of the victim and the position of the aggressor, so I thought it would be interesting to talk about it and make a movie about it,” says Polensky. “I love to study psychology and the main question is what makes us being aggressive and I wanted to deal with this question.

“I experienced bullying from both sides, from the position of the victim and the position of the aggressor, so I thought it would be interesting to talk about it and make a movie about it,” says Polensky. “I love to study psychology and the main question is what makes us being aggressive and I wanted to deal with this question.

HBO has ordered Czech spy drama Oblivious from the director of Wasteland as it steps up its original commissions in Europe.
The six-part drama is the latest original from the region, which has delivered series such as Agnieszka Holland’s Burning Bush and Polish thriller The Pack. It comes after HBO Europe partnered with the team behind acclaimed Scandi drama Lilyhammer last week on sci-fi comedy Beforeigners.
Oblivious is set in the Czech Republic in the 1980s. It was written by newcomer Ondřej Gabriel, who studied political science at Prague’s Charles University before becoming a playwright, and directed by Ivan Zacharias, the Czech filmmaker behind HBO Europe’s Wasteland.
The drama was unveiled during a panel at the Karlovy Vary film festival in the Czech Republic, which looked at HBO Europe’s role in discovering and developing writers in Central Europe. It featured screenwriters including Bogdan Mirica, creator of Romanian drama Shadows,...

As U.S. viewers discover among their VOD options HBO Europe’s original production series “Wasteland,” the thriller set in the bleak coal fields of north Bohemia and filmed in 2016 in the Czech Republic, the company says more shows are on their way.
The eight-part thriller, directed by Ivan Zacharias and Alice Nellis and scripted by Stepan Hulik, screened at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival before becoming one of the first European series produced by the premium cable company to reach U.S. audiences. It was followed more recently by Hungarian and Czech versions of the romantic comedy “When Shall We Kiss,” the latter starring Anna Geislerova.
“If we own the property, why would we not make it available to people?” posits Antony Root, HBO Europe’s head of original production.
While he confesses about the programming’s potential success across the Atlantic “I don’t know how it’s going to do,...

If you’re a dog lover, be sure to steer clear of The Pack. Why? Because you’ll either end up fearing your four-legged friends, or cringe during defensive scenes that depict appropriate, but brutal, man-on-canine violence. This isn’t your typical “when animals attack” adventure, thanks to the way director Nick Robertson is able to transform a few pups into dark, deranged reapers from Hell. Much like Adam MacDonald’s Backcountry, which features a hammer-clawed behemoth of a bear, scribe Evan Randall Green finds horror in the most primal situations, and tension never ceases. Robertson continually reminds us that Satan’s lapdogs are on the prowl, either watching from afar, or tearing into flesh with their bone-white teeth.
Did I just become a cat person?
This Australian thriller takes place on a sprawling plot of farmland, as the Wilson family are forced to defend their kingdom from a vicious pack of stray dogs.

Tagline: "You can't outrun them. You can't hide from them." A second trailer for Nick Robertson's The Pack has been released. The first trailer, revealed in late 2014, was a sales trailer. The clip showed a grisly killing, settings and a family hunted by a group of wild dogs. The second trailer shows more of the film's conflict infused action sequences. The film centers on Adam Wilson (Jack Campbell) and his family. They are seeing a future foreclosure on their farm. A bank officer threatens to take away their home, until a pack of wild dogs takes care of the banker. Then, the Wilson family is also attacked, with darkness falling on the surrounding fields.
