With Kathryn Bigelow currently planning to shoot her Zero Dark Thirty follow-up, a drama on the Detroit riots, this summer, she’s now found her star. Following the recent release of Bridgend, star Hannah Murray (Game of Thrones) is in talks to team up with the director, The Wrap reports. The crime drama focuses on one of the most destructive riots in America’s history, the 1967 Detroit riots. The riots took place over 5 days in the summer of 196 and the film is expected to explore the discrimination behind the protests. The script was written by Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty) and we can expect a 2017 release in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the incident.
Another director is also planning a film based on historic riots. Deniz Gamze Ergüven, coming off her Oscar-nominated drama Mustang, will direct Kings, which will depict the 1992 Los Angeles riots, resulting in 55 deaths and thousands of injuries.

Hannah Murray Takes a Sabbatical from Winterfell for Bridgend
By Alex Simon
British actress Hannah Murray is on a hot streak. In addition to co-starring in HBO’s hit series Game of Thrones as Gilly, the Wilding girl rescued by good-hearted Samwell (John Bradley), the 25 year-old Cambridge graduate recently copped the Best Actress prize at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival for her starring turn in Bridgend, a powerful drama about a rash of teen suicides in a rural Welsh town.
Hannah stars as Sara, the teenage daughter of a police detective (the always excellent Steven Waddington) sent to a rural village in the county of Bridgend in Wales to investigate the suicides, which have the town’s adults baffled and shattered. Once settled, Sara falls in with a crowd of kids, led by the charismatic and troubled Jamie (Josh O’Connor), with whom Sara develops a dangerous bond. Co-written...

Bridgend
Directed by Jeppe Rønde
Denmark, 2015
Philadelphia Film Festival
Bridgend is harrowing and haunting. It’s also oppressive and relentlessly bleak. The title is a town in Wales that is experiencing an inexplicable rash of teenage suicides. Sara (Hannah Murray) moves back to town with her father Dave (Steven Waddington), a police officer investigating the deaths. Sara meets a local group of teenagers led by the mercurial Thomas (Scott Arthur), and the brooding Jamie (Josh O’Connor) and is soon sucked into their hypnotic, angst-filled, and cult-like behavior.
There’s something of the small town doom of The Wicker Man in Bridgend, and also something of a slowly paced music video. Director Jeppe Rønde’s film is undeniably gorgeous. He and cinematographer Magnus Nordenhof Jønck favor dark images, with highlights in the background and the characters themselves very often nearly underexposed. There’s a lot of frosted glass and translucent,...

Bridgend
Written by Jeppe Rønde, Torben Bech, and Peter Asmussen
Directed by Jeppe Rønde
Denmark, 2015
A feeling of gloom pervades every frame of Bridgend, the Danish teen drama which makes its Canadian premiere at Fantasia. Even as the kids drink and dance in ecstasy (in a scene which wouldn’t be out of place in Skins, the British soap where star Hannah Murray got her break) or skinny dip in large groups, there’s an undeniable sense of melancholy in their maniacal celebrations. Given the sadness evident in otherwise ebullient scenes, the ominous shots of the countryside shrouded in darkness or mournful messages on a computer screen make life in the film’s titular Welsh town seem unbearably grim.
You can understand the despondency. Bridgend provides a fictional look at a real-life incident in which there were 79 recorded suicides in the town between 2007 and 2012, none of which had an easy explanation.

The Tribeca Film Festival of 2015 closed the books on Sunday as it always does, with a day full of screenings of the prize-winning films. And, as I noted on Day Three, it bears noting that the festival’s reputation of being for “indies that aren’t really indies” almost never bears out during the awards ceremony. All of the films that played on Sunday will be launching new talent into American arthouses, rather than showing a new dimension for established stars.

The twisted notion of a popular “teenage suicide cult” is sick unto itself and it will unquestionably send a chill up the spine of every parent. While Danish filmmaker Jeppe Rønde’s haunting feature-length directorial debut, “Bridgend,” will certainly unnerve parents and non-parents alike, it is perhaps the underlying suggestion of the movie that’s even more disturbing: the idea that we cannot control (or protect) the ones we love from their bad choices, and the misguided free will of adolescents can be distorted towards the darkest of places. Though “Bridgend” is no horror movie, the emotionally unsettling aspects of the film, while subtle, do recall the shocking response to Ben Wheatley’s “Kill List,” or, to a lesser extent, recent Sundance spooker, “The Witch.” “Bridgend” finds both its title and story ripped from the headlines. Beginning in 2007, a sudden rash of suicides broke out in in the titular small town in South Wales.

Over the weekend, the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival gave out their annual awards, putting a bow on the latest installment of the fest. It was a pretty solid festival, as far as I could tell, though in all fairness I saw less movies this year than I usually do at Tribeca. Still, the films that I did wind up privy to wound up impressing me, by and large. Most of my favorite titles weren’t cited by these awards, but one sort of was, and that was Leslye Headland’s wonderful Sleeping with Other People. That was a runner up (as you’ll see below), but it deserved plenty more. I personally would have given some awards to not just Sleeping with Other People, but also titles like Grandma, Misery Loves Comedy, and Slow West as well. I might do my own awards/best of piece later on in the week,...

Virgin Mountain Gentle Icelandic drama Virgin Mountain (Fúsi) was named best dramatic film at Tribeca. The film, which tells an offbeat love story, won a purse of $25,000 for director Dagur Kári, who took home a $5,000 bonus for best screenplay. The film's hat-trick of awards saw Gunnar Jónsson named as best actor for his role as shy man mountain Fúsi, whose subtle performance that relies as much on small gestures and looks as scripting, is fully deserving of recognition.

In 2009, Vanity Fair published a feature on Bridgend County, Wales, a community which was home to an epidemic of teenage suicide by hanging. The mysterious deaths continued for a few more years, finally dropping off in 2012 at 79 suicides but 2009, a dozen or so deaths had already been reported and to date, the experts haven't managed to figure out why they happened.
Danish filmmaker Jeppe Rønde doesn't claim to have any answers but he didn't simply pull the narrative for his feature film debut Bridgend from thin air. Read More: 5 Observations About the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival Lineup Between December 2007 and January 2012, 79 suicides were reported in Bridgend County in Wales. Most were teenagers between the ages of 13 and 17 who were found dead by hanging, leaving no suicide note. In Danish filmmaker Jeppe Rønde's new film "Bridgend," Sara (Hannah Murray) and her father Dave (Steven Waddington) arrive in a small town in the county where Sara falls in love with Jamie, while Dave, as the town's new policeman, tries to solve the mystery of the suicides. Rønde, a documentary filmmaker, followed the teenagers from the area for six year, transforming their stories into his fictional film debut. "Bridgend" will make its North American premiere during the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival. Copenhagen’s Cph Pix (April 9-22) will be bookended by films from two Danish directors shooting in the UK – Jeppe Ronde’s Welsh teen suicide drama Bridgend [pictured] and Thomas Vinterberg’s Thomas Hardy adaptation, Far From The Madding Crowd.
The audience-focused Cph Pix will show 130 feature films during 420 screenings and events.
Festival director Jacob Neiiendam said: “Artistically it’s a strong year for Danish cinema.”
Indeed, three Danish debut features will screen at Pix. “The first features from Thomas Daneskov [The Elite], Anna Sofie Hartmann [Limbo] and Jeppe Rønde showcase a diversity and nerve we have been missing in our fiction films, and they are just the tip of the iceberg,” added Neiiendam.
“We always wanted the festival to be a platform for local films which wouldn’t play well with regular releases, and this year we’ve been flooded with films produced outside the standard support system - and they are good films.”
