Here we have the six-minute music video for Arcade Fire's new single "We Exist". My interest in this one was mostly due to the inclusion of famous, Golden-Globe nominated actor Andrew Garfield. However, I was quite disappointed with this one. He plays a male who is obviously confused about his sexuality and goes for a night out in a female dress. The strange thing is that he goes to an establishment where tough rockers are celebrating and where one person with such doubts about who he (or she) really is would never go. Then after some solid drama early on, this music video just becomes ridiculous. All of a sudden, we see 5 pretty masculine guys in very female clothes dancing on stage. This could actually have been a nice filmmaking effort in terms of tolerance and understanding, but they just went so much over the top that it really turned into nothing but an embarrassing effort. In addition to that, the song isn't particularly good either. I quite liked some of Arcade Fire's early work, but it seems they have really decreased in terms of quality in the last couple years. Not recommended. Back to Garfield, he has actually quite a few really decent performances in his body of work and I hope he can return to the level of "Never Let Me Go" or some of his earlier work now that the Spider Man franchise is over. He certainly has the talent, even if you don't see it in this short film.
