When I was recommended to this pilot and was informed that it was an indie style Canadian show shot over just two days, it was safe to say I was sceptical. However, once I watched this pilot I was pleasantly surprised by how much fun I was having watching it and how good it was.
The show takes place in a recruitment office and follows the escapades of three main characters named Alex (Alex Lee), Simon (Jacob Hogan), and Natalie (Olivia Clarke). I found these three characters diverse enough on camera to add substance to the show and also similar enough to people I know in real life. The main characters were likable and acted well. Considering the short time of filming this pilot the lead actors and writing really impressed me. In particular, I found the character of Simon (Jacob Hogan) to be very likable and funny, diffusing tension in scenes, and bringing out the traits of other characters a lot. He was a very easy character to like. I also thought Natalie (Olivia Clarke) was a very likable character and I am very interested in seeing Natalie's story develop (She really is hiking in the wrong direction).
The writing for the show was great, especially considering it was Canadian. I was expecting a CBC cookie cutter Corner Gas type show but I really am glad I was wrong. The pacing wasn't too bad and the themes were good. Perhaps being in my twenties and Canadian myself drew me in deeper. Also, I loved the opening, seeing shots of Toronto always leaves me with a warm and fuzzy feeling. The conflict and resolution happened very quickly but it had me held for a little bit.
Things that can be improved is the over-acting of some of the supporting cast. The characters of Doug (Craig Estrella) and office boss Petra (Kluane Carroll) could be toned down a lot. The direction seemed strong but could offer more than what was presented in this pilot. Time may have been an issue for this cast and crew but these are things I think would improve the show.
All in all I had a blast watching it and I am ready for more. Well done!
