Discovery Channel’s hit franchises, like “Gold Rush” and “Deadliest Catch,” featured plenty of blood and sweat. But where were the tears? That’s something Howard Lee immediately began asking, upon taking control of the network at the end of 2022.
After Lee was handed the keys to Discovery that December, “I spent my entire Christmas vacation devouring, scrutinizing, every single Discovery Channel show and familiarizing myself with it, like a fanboy. And looking at, of course, the ratings for each one and the budgets.”
As head of TLC, Lee helped grow the network to new heights thanks to blockbuster franchises like “90 Day Fiancé,” where emotion was his bread and butter. But after his crash course in Discovery fare, Lee felt that the flagship network could do a better job of creating programming that its audience found viscerally enthralling.

TV host Josh Gates of Expedition Unknown had a chance to take a trip on the doomed Titan submersible but declined the opportunity because of fears the vessel was unsafe, he revealed on Twitter.
The Discovery Channel personality considered visiting the wreckage of the Titanic on the OceanGate Expeditions submersible. But a troubling dive with CEO Stockton Rush led Gates to cancel plans to film the most famous shipwreck site in history.
“I had the unique opportunity to dive in the @Oceangate #Titan sub with Stockton at the helm in preparation for its maiden mission to Titanic,” Gates tweeted on June 21.

Josh Gates, an explorer and the host of “Expedition Unknown” and more shows on the Discovery Channel, revealed on Twitter that he turned down a chance to visit the wreckage of the Titanic using OceanGate’s now-missing Titan submersible. Gates was supposed to film on the submersible but decided against it after discovering “safety concerns.”
“I had the unique opportunity to dive in the OceanGate Titan sub with [company CEO] Stockton [Rush] at the helm in preparation for its maiden mission to Titanic,” Gates wrote. “I pray for a positive outcome to the rescue efforts of those aboard, including fellow ‘Explorers Club’ member Hamish Harding.”
Gates added, “To those asking, Titan did not perform well on my dive. Ultimately, I walked away from a huge opportunity to film Titanic due to my safety concerns with the OceanGate platform. There’s more to the history and design of Titan that has not been made public — much of it concerning.

Los Angeles, June 22 (Ians) Writer and former showrunner on the popular sitcom ‘The Simpsons’ Mike Reiss says he’s “not optimistic” about a rescue of the missing submarine that was exploring the Titanic wreckage.
He has an informed opinion – it’s a vehicle he has taken several trips on prior to this incident, reports deadline.com.
The submersible ‘Titan’ vehicle has been missing since June 18 in the North Atlantic, with five people on board.
“I know the logistics of it and I know how vast the ocean is and how very tiny this craft is,” he told BBC Breakfast on June 19.

Mike Reiss, a writer for “The Simpsons,” had “constant trepidation” when he took a dive on OceanGate’s now-missing Titan sub 11 months ago.
“I kissed my wife goodbye, thinking that was the last time I might ever see her,” he told CNN’s Jake Tapper on Tuesday as the rescue efforts continued for the five people aboard the Titan. Like every other passenger, he signed a waiver that this voyage in an uncertified vessel could end in death.
However, he found the sub’s simple design “reassuring” and admitted to falling asleep during the two-and-a-half-hour dive, even though he was “constantly knowing this could be the end.”

Exclusive: In an email to staffers this morning, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav congratulated the HBO team and the overall conglom on what looks to be a fantastic weekend for both the linear channel and HBO Max in the premiere of the Game of Thrones spinoff, House of the Dragon.
Not only was this the biggest marketing campaign in HBO’s history, reaching 130M people in the U.S. for the 200M production, but the CEO points out that the endeavor exemplified a revived studio that is “committed to building one team with one mission.” We’ve heard from sources that the House of the Dragon marketing campaign indeed is bigger than anything that HBO ever pushed, including the second season of Euphoria and the final season of Game of Thrones, which averaged 44.2M per episode domestically. Talk about growing a franchise: When GoT premiered in 2011, its first episode drew 4.3M viewers.

If the truth is out there, you may be able to find it in the upcoming government report reveal on unexplained aerial phenomena. And you’ll definitely be able to find it on Discovery, Science Channel and Travel Channel.

Even if said report proves to be a dud, well, Josh Gates and the gang are going to have plenty to talk about anyway.

Santa Fe author Forrest Fenn, known for his 2010 book Thrill of the Chase which inspired a popular treasure hunt in the Rocky Mountains, died on Monday. He was 90.
Fenn died of natural causes in his Santa Fe home.
The writer and former U.S. Air Force pilot rose to notoriety after a poem in his memoir The Thrill of the Chase hinted at the location of a hidden cache of about $2 million in jewels and gold. His poem not only inspired treasure hunters to embark on their treacherous quest for his treasure but encouraged them to document their own experiences on the hunt.
Earlier this year the popular hunt made headlines as a Colorado woman, whose husband died searching for Fenn’s secret treasure, claimed that the Santa Fe writer never hid anything. Despite the woman’s claims, Fenn announced that another hunter following his clues supposedly found the treasure. The author,...

Not even the Covid-19 pandemic could stop Shark Week. The annual Discovery Channel franchise, now in its 32nd edition, remains a juggernaut for the company — which this year is using Shark Week to launch five new series while giving the network (and cable in general) a needed boost.

The debut of Netflix’s “Unsolved Mysteries” reboot earlier this month has brought about a clamoring for cold cases to be brought to justice. In that spirit, we’ve compiled a list of TV shows that have actually solved crimes, exonerated people, and found answers to the unknown, from “The Jinx” miniseries that lead to the arrest of Robert Durst, to “Extinct or Alive,” which found a living animal thought to have died out over a hundred years ago.
“Unsolved Mysteries”
Back before the Netflix reboot, this classic series was on network television. Creator Terry Meurer told TheWrap that during its original 23-year run, the series helped to solve over 260 cold cases. She has high hopes that the Netflix reboot will have the same luck.
