Interesting idea and premise, but sadly the execution is not really working out Warning: Spoilers
"Sex & Crime" is a German movie from 2016, so a relatively new release and this one was made by Paul Florian Müller. It is his second full feature film as writer and first full feature film as director and he is also the producer here. At 75 minutes roughly, it is not a relatively long movie. The cast includes a handful of interesting names, but I will not mention them now as you can check the list for yourself. Lets just say that i kinda like Möhring and usually really like the stunning Claudia Eisinger (sadly with some of the worst writing from the entire film to her character with these cringeworthy French music scenes that did not fit in at all), but these two did not elevate the mediocre material for me either. So I guess the script is the biggest problem here, but that's also strange because the script is also the biggest strength at times. It is certainly a very bizarre little movie. The good thing is really that you almost never feel that it takes itself seriously and this really would have hurt the film a lot as it has nothing to do with realism. You could maybe call it a bit of a German version of "Kiss Kiss Bang bang" that goes wrong on several occasions though. The consequence is that I did not enjoy the watch despite liking some of the cast. Stokowski is okay too, but Busch never did a lot for me. As the title already tells, there are hardly no taboos in here. But the sometimes relatively crass references are no working out in terms of comedy either for the most part and this is perhaps the main reason why I cannot recommend checking this out. But still if there is any perspective from which this film can be enjoyed it is comedy because there are some moments that were a bit on the entertaining side. But as a crime movie or drama or thriller, it is just never working because it lacks realism entirely in my opinion. Overall, it was a close call between 2 and 3 stars out of 5, but I think the negative is more frequent here than the positive and while I applaud the bold approach at times, the shoddy execution still forces me to give this one a thumbs-down. Nonetheless, I hope Müller can build a successful career as I see potential in here without a doubt and from an entirely subjective perspective I also liked how tiny the number of cast members here was as many many German films just include too many characters and fail to elaborate properly on them. All in all, I think this work here sure is different, with a touch of Tarantino at times even, but it is all just too unrefined. Watch something else instead.
