- [Arriving at her apartment, Joan Watson opens and reads a letter she received in the mail]
- Dr. Joan Watson: [reading the letter in narration] "My dearest Watson: Although it's been far too long since we laid eyes on each other, I continue to follow your career with great interest. I was sorry to hear about the murder of Andrew Mittal, and more than a bit unhappy to learn that his death was an attempt on your own most cherished life."
- [the scene changes to a prison hallway where a guard enters a cell block, carrying a meal tray]
- Jamie Moriarty: [continuing narration of her letter to Joan] I still believe there's a game unfolding between Sherlock and I, and you have made yourself a valued and essential contributor. I won't have you removed from play prematurely. Uninvited participants are not welcome at the table and their intrusions will be dealt with... accordingly.
- Prison Guard: [puts down tray, pulls out and speaks into walkie-talkie] I've got a situation. Open Ten's cell.
- [the cell door buzzes and unlocks, which the prison guard opens to find Elena March's dead body on the cell floor]
- Prison Guard: [on walkie-talkie] Call the control room immediately.
- Jamie Moriarty: [continuing narration as the scene returns to Joan reading the letter] There may well be more rounds to be played between the two of us, and until such time as we're both free to engage, I shall remain, in delighted anticipation... Jamie Moriarty.
- Detective Marcus Bell: When you two aren't working a case, what happens? Do you just sit around in contemplative silence?
