Brazilian kids figuring out who they are Spoilers
ksf-217 December 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Spoilers

Beira-Mar aka "Seashore" starts out with two young-ish Brazilian guys trying to come up with a plan for their vacation. They dare each other to go into a bar, but one of the ID's they show doesn't seem to be good enough, showing us just how young they are. In one scene, they are next to each other, and we see their arms moving quickly.... but it turns out they are playing video games... although we are supposed to think something else is going on. Lots of soulful staring. Hanging out. The two main actors, Mateus Almada and Mauricio Barcellos, are two dudes on a road-trip. They are on some kind of mission for somebody's father, but we're not quite sure what they have to do. I'm guessing that because it's written by people that had these actual experiences way back when... things happen in a slower, more discrete way than they would be now; i think today's youth, even in Brazil, would cut to the chase quicker than they do in this film. More soulful stares. Hanging out with chicks and nothing happens. More long pauses. One of the lads re-connects with his family, but we're still not sure what's going on. The two guys FINALLY hook up, to the sound of the waves crashing on the beach. Very romantic. The one that didn't like the ocean before gets up and jumps into the waves, apparently to prove that he is now conquering his fears. All of them! End scene. Cute film. Directed by Marcio Reolon and Filipe Matzembacher, who have done a bunch of films together over the past ten years.

A somewhat difficult story
gaspar-garrido15 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Brazil is one of the most geographically distinct countries in the world. This movie was filmed in the Southern State of Brazil – Rio Grande do Sul. I admire the capacity of turning one of the most cliché setting of Brazil in something new – this is the unknown Brazil; so as someone said this is not set in Northern Portugal. This represents a great creativity because it is not easy to turn something already known in something completely new.

Nevertheless, the history was vague and somewhat confusing. I must admit that in the beginning I thought Martin and Tomás were already a couple because of their intimacy, so when I realize they weren't, when they arrive to the night club, I found out the end.

People might say that this film argument is just like many others – what it isn't completely false – but this is a first impression on LGBT/Come out and growing up matters in Southern Brazil – a much different cultural background from the North (São Paulo and Rio). It can be difficult to cope with the story – a indie low budget problem – but it's worth to see it until the end.

OK, fun realism travel type movie---authentic age for the coming out part.
colorado-3249328 September 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I will try and give this movie some pluses that stand out. The two actors are young 15 to 17 at that extremely critical age for gay people in the coming out process. This was unique. The realism travel log aspect was fun...probably the Northern Coast of Portugal although the movie was of French origin clearly all of the actors and the location were the real deal... The bad...it drags...an hour and a half to reach the love scene that takes about 5 minutes. We assume this is going to happen. But there really are no indications of it. It's OK..it depends on how long I remember it whether all the non obvious film efforts work. We shall see...the symbolism and so forth were subtle not in your face. Will give it a 6

Not really interesting...
rulien-805-18655516 August 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I'm Brazilian and I'm more qualified to judge their performance based on the fact that I know the language and local customs. With that said, it lacks interaction between the characters, there's too much slow and uninteresting monologues, plus only one of them babbles a few words during the very few dialogs that they properly have. Even worse is that, usually, only one of them is framed on the scene while we can only hear the other babbling (really, if there were no subs in English I would not be able to hear, let alone understand some of the lines). I also should mention, their speech is missing a lot of acting in it. Finally, when something interesting happens (basically the whole reason for watch the movie), it does not last five minutes and then suddenly the movie ends.

Vaguely Interesting
B247 September 2015
Here is an example of self-conscious introspection going in too many directions at once. Bad enough for the viewer trying to cope with shaky frames from hand-held cameras, even worse when the narrative slows for long, heavy pauses in either words or actions. One wonders why so many low budget films share this phenomenon. It is tempting to call out to the screen, "Get on with it, already!"

Still, there is charm in the notion that two young friends can figuratively swim their way, as ocean sounds play in the distance, through casual interruptions in a simple assignment to locate and retrieve a family document of some importance as they visit a beach house in the cold of winter. It might even be possible to salvage this film by cutting out totally irrelevant scenes that serve only to provide background for their respective characters. A filmmaker's self-indulgence in attempting to recreate a familiar story from his or her past reminds me of how quickly I run away whenever someone says, "To make a long story short..." which in fact becomes a stream of consciousness without an end.

Indeed, there is no clear end to this film. It just goes on and on.

Interesting story that gradually unfolds
lovegroveao9 January 2019
This is a pleasantly developed story, well acted and directed. The two themes interweave - coming to see a bullying father for what he is, and using the character of a gay friend to help Martin, who is the victim of his own father's anger, arrive at freedom and self-assurance. This is one gay character who is not angst ridden, but comfortable in his own life and consequently able to be a guide and support. The final sequence shows self-doubt being finally overcome. This is not an action movie, but a story of psychological development. It is of the utmost importance when watching this film to read the subtitles carefully. The film is slow in parts because these are teenagers given time to say things they find it hard to express. There is a lot of time given to plucking up courage. A good film, and I enjoyed it.

Rambling Boring Mess
bgthomaswriter9 January 2016
So do you suppose there is a way for me to sue Filipe Matzembacher and Marcio Reolon, the directors of this staggeringly boring movie, for my time back? This film was rambling, boring, pointless. I wondered if this even had a script and they just let the actors improvise. Nothing was solved. Nothing resolved. I finally kept fast-forwarding through it hoping that something would happen. The actors were cute and seemed to be able to act. But I certainly won't be looking out for anything by these directors again. What a waste of my time. What is it with gay movies that the creators seem to think they have to get artsy-fatsy? Straight love films have a beginning, middle and end. Why can't a gay movie?

Loved this Movie
Casey599 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I really enjoyed this movie. I watched it yesterday and again today. I thought it was well written, directed, and acted. Also thought the cinematography was excellent.

I thought for first time, writers, directors (Filipe Matzembacher, Marcio Reolon), and actor ("Tomaz" Maurício Barcellosm) it was very good. Shot in chronological order in 30 days on a low budget indie movie.

Not sure why there are so many negative reviews of this movie. I didn't find it long or boring, or a waste of time.

I'll admit that this movie did leave some unanswered questions in my mind, but I think that was what the writer/director wanted. To leave it up to me as how to interpret the charters and plot.

The ending is a little unsettling for me. The first time I watched the movie I thought Martin was trying to commit suicide. But after watching it a second time, I think he was just freeing himself from his father and his past, or at least that is what I think.

Both of the main leads were very handsome and believable. I my opinion there was real chemistry between them.

I'm adding this movie to my all time favorite list.

I would highly recommend it.

So...slow...moving...nothing happening...
paulclaassen6 June 2018
Well, this film was about...uhm, what was it about? Nothing happened - and I mean NOTHING! It was about nothing. This was like watching someone's home videos. It is a very quiet film and very weirdly photographed. There's no chemistry between the actors. I wanted to hit the forward button to get the movie to move along, or just go somewhere! I wondered why some scenes ended up in the film instead of the editing room floor. This...was...so...slow...moving...

Yawn!

Not a terrible movie but not great either
aharon-izraeli24 March 2020
I understand that to make a gay themed movie in Brazil might not be very easy but in what is generally considered one of the more passionate of Latin American countries this is lacking in passion. It's not that the story is told too slowly, it just feels like the actors spent the whole movie looking forward in mild embarrassment to the" love scene" they were going to film at the end. Half way through I was wondering if this wasn't one of those movies that are accidentally labelled as gay themed just because they have a gay friend in one scene or something and then when one of the leads goes to buy beer with the girfriends boy friend it looked like maybe they were the gay couple because those two actors actually seemed to have chemistry...but no. I gave it five stars and I feel that I was very, very generous . Not great but watchable if you can't find anything better.

rather tedious
mail-0421011 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Being gay myself and having seen quite a few gay- and coming out- and coming of age movies I found this film rather tedious, way too long, rather sad and without any real story, without a beginning, a middle and an end ! The supposedly straight friend Martin is a slow, not very determent , drifting aimlessly through the day type of guy-but constantly having sex with some girl or another. He seems to be a lifelong friend of of the other, guy, who is obviously gay and has a life-long crush on Martin. Both have never had any sexual encounter with each other-and then, in the last 5 minutes of this sad little, pretentious ,badly filmed "artwork" they seem to remember that -and dutifully rush through a bedscene-after which Martin, who is afraid of the beach and the water, takes a long swing in the cold, wintry wavy ocean. NO, that's NOT one of the must see gay movies.

Lovingly made movie with great young actors.
simonturf26 February 2017
I can understand this movie doesn't get the best rating from the average gay movie viewer. It stays away from most gay movie clichés. There's no mentioning of anything gay scene related. There's no dancing to cheap house music in a gay disco or bar. There's no muscular actors or too pretty characters with successful high paid jobs. There's no singing of musical tunes nor is there a group of happy gay friends sharing their latest flings. There's no straight guys to be turned and no rent-boys and hustlers to be paid. There's no diseases and it doesn't end in drama. There's no acting in which inner dialogue is is being constantly expressed in words. There's no gimmicks or tricks to keep you entertained nor endless music scores on piano. There's two boys that could have been your best mates at school (when you discovered alternative music, alcohol and smoking weed) who admit to loving each other more than they dared show before. I enjoyed the natural pacing of this movie, the timeless boredom of seaside towns out of season, the frustration of family and the recognizable (big) events in the little lives of the everyday characters involved. Well done, I need more of this!

Subtle, atmospheric, beautifully acted
andreasphilip14 May 2019
A soft tale of rite of passage for two boys. The story unfolds in an undramatic way. Nothing more than the absolutely necessary is explained. The acting is superb, awkwardness, confusion, fragility and desire all perfectly depicted on the actors' faces.

Fantastic film with great performances.

I was delighted to discover this gem of a film. Outstanding, naturalistic performances and relatable characters. I found myself completely engaged from the very beginning of this film. Excellent casting and direction of two quality lead performances. Highly recommend this film!
