Netflix added nearly 30 million global paid subscribers in 2023, though it might have watered down its hit pool in the process.
According to a new study by British streaming-data company Digital i, Netflix had fewer than half the global hits in 2023 (10) than it had in 2022 (22). Digital i defines a “hit” as an original movie or a series that was watched by at least 30 percent of Netflix’s subscriber base in North America, EU, and Latam.
The long list of 2022 Netflix hits goes like this: “Wednesday” (61.8%), “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” (53.3%), “Stranger Things 4” (48.0%), “The Adam Project” (47.9%), “Knives Out 2” (45.9%), “The Gray Man” (42.4%), “The Watcher” (41.9%), “The Tinder Swindler” (38.0%), “Inventing Anna” (37.5%), “The Sandman” (35.7%), “Senior Year” (35.6%), “1899” (34.7%), “Bridgerton” Season 2 (34.5%), “Troll” (34.0%), “Enola Holmes 2” (33.7%), “Luckiest Girl Alive” (33.4%), “Harry & Meghan” (32.7%), “Hustle” (32.6%), “The Man from Toronto” (31.5%), “Purple Hearts” (31.3%), “Me Time” (31.1%), “Day Shift” (31.0%), and “Falling for Christmas” (30.8%).

Primetime Emmy winning producer Bruna Papandrea is looking to sell her production company Made Up Stories per sources.
This is very early in the works with no bidders as of yet, nor if the Big Little Lies EP will maintain a stake in the next phase of the company which she co-founded with her husband Steve Hutensky and Australian producer Jodi Matterson six years ago.
One thing is for certain and that’s Papandrea is on a roll following her exit from Pacific Standard, the banner she shared with Reese Witherspoon and under which their award-winning HBO series Big Little Lies was made as well as 2x Oscar nominated feature, Wild, and the David Fincher $369M-plus grossing blockbuster, Gone Girl.
Under Made Up Stories, Papandrea was recently behind the current Prime Video miniseries, The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart, starring Sigourney Weaver. In addition, she made HBO’s The Undoing,...

Whenever a producer in recent times has exited their partnership with a star, quite often said producer’s output is not as robust.
It’s a different situation for Bruna Papandrea, who after peeling off from Reese Witherspoon’s Pacific Standard Production Company has been on quite a roll with such TV hits as HBO’s The Undoing, Netflix’s Anatomy of a Scandal and Luckiest Girl Alive, Hulu’s Nine Perfect Strangers and now the Prime Video limited series The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart based on Holly Ringland’s novel. This is all under Papandrea’s six-year-old production banner Made Up Stories, which is devoted to female-centric stories.
On today’s Crew Call podcast, we talk with Papandrea about why she went solo with Made Up Stories, the genesis of The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart, and more.
Lost Flowers of Alice Hart follows the story of the title protagonist.

The makers of Flashdance hoped for a hit, but no one had a feeling it would become a generation-defining sensation.
The Paramount film marked the first collaboration of producers Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson, later known for blockbusters like Beverly Hills Cop and Top Gun. With a script co-written by Joe Eszterhas (Basic Instinct), Flashdance centered on Alex, a teenage welder in Pittsburgh who spends her nights performing at a cabaret bar but dreams of becoming a professional dancer.
Bruckheimer remembers the film’s team struggling to choose the lead, but that director Adrian Lyne was sold on newcomer Jennifer Beals. “The bosses at Paramount couldn’t make up their minds, so they brought all the secretaries in to view the screen tests, and they all picked Jennifer,” Bruckheimer tells The Hollywood Reporter.

It seems there's a new portmanteau of an actor's name and the word "renaissance" cropping up all the time. In the early 2010s, we had the "McConaissance" and now Oscar winner Brendan Fraser is enjoying his own "Brenaissance." Michael Keaton, however, escaped the dreaded portmanteau when he re-ascended to superstar status with 2014's "Birdman." And he's since maintained that status with memorable turns in everything from the Oscar-winning "Spotlight" to Hulu's excellent chronicle of the opioid epidemic "Dopesick" — even debuting in the MCU as Vulture in "Spider-Man: Homecoming."
Soon, Keaton will be returning as Batman in "The Flash," some 30 years after walking away from the role. He's also gearing up for his directorial debut with "Knox Goes Away", which means that the 71-year-old is still a very busy man.

With his career falling by the wayside, he leans on his grown and pregnant daughter Grace for support, and ultimately evolves into the father Grace never had.

Mila Kunis has entered the chat. The "Luckiest Girl Alive" actor shared her two cents on those viral photos of Ashton Kutcher and Reese Witherspoon - y'know, the highly memed, widely tweeted shots of the "Your Place or Mine" costars stiffly posing together on the red carpet, completely devoid of their onscreen chemistry. Kunis unsurprisingly agrees with the rest of the world: they look quite uncomfortable.
"[Mila] even emailed us last night. She goes, 'You guys look so awkward on the red carpet together,'" Witherspoon revealed on Feb. 6 while discussing the Netflix film on the "Today" show. She continued, "When you know a girlfriend so much, it was just fun to get to know her significant other 'cause I've loved her for so long."

Director Mike Barker unveils Luckiest Girl Alive, based on the book of the same name by Jessica Knoll. In the film, Mila Kunis stars as magazine editor TifAni FaNelli and is set to marry her fiance, Luke Harrison. FaNelli, however, is left to deal with the trauma of being a survivor of a school shooting and a previous gang rape by her previous friends Liam and Dean, with the former being killed and the latter being paralyzed during the school shooting. There might be some improvement needed on its execution but it still has a slappy dose of entertainment coming from Kunis' charismatic and magnetic performance. Maybe we should start with the positives. The film's accomplishments squarely lie in Kunis and her independent attitude. Her...

There's a sibling duo hiding within the "Ginny & Georgia" cast. As many fans of the Netflix series have just discovered, the actors who play Joe and Padma - Raymond and Rebecca Ablack, respectively - are brother and sister in real life. Their characters only share one scene in the first season, but once Padma joins Ginny (Antonia Gentry) as an employee at Joe's Blue Farm Café in season two, their resemblance becomes more and more obvious by the episode.
Viewers learn way more about Joe and Padma individually as their characters develop in the show's latest installment. Joe forms a friendship-turned-romantic-fling with Cynthia (Sabrina Grdevich), who often visits Blue Farm to drink wine and escape thoughts of her sick husband. Despite the brief hookup, Joe's soft spot for Georgia (Brianne Howey) remains constant, and it seems the feeling was mutual at one point when he confronts...

Mila Kunis almost became a resident of the north.
The actress filmed “Luckiest Girl Alive” in Toronto last year and came to fall in love with the city, so much so she considered moving there.
“I’ve only ever shot in Canada when I was in my 20s, so I never got to experience the aspects of Canada that I took for granted, or Toronto, let me be specific,” she recalled in a “Q & Eh” segment for Netflix in Your Neighbourhood.

Female filmmakers are taking abortion protections into their own hands following the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade, said panelists during the “Navigating Hollywood in a Post-Roe v. Wade World” event presented by Loeb & Loeb at TheWrap’s Power Women Summit.
Sarah Treem, co-creator and showrunner of “The Affair,” is one of nearly 1500 members of the Showrunners Coalition that demanded Hollywood take action in support of those working on productions in “abortion-hostile states.”
The Showrunners Coalition received an “astonishing and unprecedented” response from fellow creatives, she told moderator Ivy Kagan Bierman, Chair of Entertainment Labor at Loeb & Loeb. The studios, not so much.
“The ability for travel reimbursement [is] really what people are talking about, in terms of the things that the companies came out with right away. Sure, that’s great to be reimbursed if you’ve traveled to have an abortion, but really, it’s kind...

Halloween Ends, the 13th in the long-running franchise, was the top feature film — and eighth most watched title overall — for the week of Oct. 10-16. It had 717 million minutes of viewing time in the three days after its Oct. 14 release on Peacock’s premium tiers. It’s the first title from the NBCUniversal streaming service (which is considerably smaller in the United States than the likes of Netflix, HBO Max and Amazon’s Prime Video) to make the Nielsen rankings.

The Watcher cruised to a win in Nielsen’s streaming rankings for the week of October 10 to 16, giving producer Ryan Murphy his second top show less than a month after the release of the blowout hit Dahmer.
With 2.355 billion minutes of streaming, the series more than doubled the viewership of runner-up The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power on Prime Video.
Based on a true story and, loosely, on a New York magazine article, The Watcher stars Naomi Watts, Bobby Cannavale, Jennifer Coolidge and Mia Farrow. The thriller series was co-created by Ian Brennan along with Murphy, whose rich overall deal with Netflix has recently started to bear fruit. One additional tweak by Netflix helped the show rack up even more viewership given Nielsen’s Monday-through-Sunday methodology: a release on a Thursday, not the usual Friday berth. Illustrating the potency of Netflix’s algorithm, about 36 of Watcher viewers had also seen Dahmer.
