Filmmaker Lu Chuan, perhaps the most prominent Chinese commercial filmmaker visiting Cannes this year, will touch down on the Côte d’Azur Saturday to shop three new projects — one finished documentary, one nearly complete sci-fi thriller in need of a global distributor, and an all-new drama feature seeking a U.S. co-production partner.
Lu is best known to the industry for his acclaimed early features Kekexili: Mountain Patrol (2004) and City of Life and Death (2009), as well as adventure blockbuster Chronicles of the Ghostly Tribe (2015) and the big-budget documentary he made for Disney and China Film Group, Born in China (2016).
He’ll arrive in Cannes with an early cut of Beijing 2022, the official documentary of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games that he directed with Chinese industry titan Zhang Yimou as executive producer. For the film, Lu was given unprecedented access to Beijing officials as they deliberated how to hold the Games...

We’re only three months away from the launch of Disney Plus, and the House of Mouse has amassed quite a catalog of films available to stream from the start. In fact, now that Disney has completely acquired Fox, more than 300 movie titles will be available upon its debut on November 12th. And within a year, that’s expected to grow by 200 more.
Considering Disney Plus will go head-to-head with Netflix, Hulu and other at-home streaming services, this large array of exclusive selections is expected to give Disney an upper hand against its ever-growing competition. That being said, while Disney’s platform prides itself as the future home for exclusive Marvel and Star Wars content, the service won’t actually launch with every film in either franchise.
In fact, only four Marvel movies will be accessible from day one – Iron Man, Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World and Captain Marvel.

Warner Bros./New Line’s “The Curse of La Llorona” has beaten box office expectations this weekend with a $26.5 million opening against a $9 million budget. But while the horror film will find profit for New Line, the anticipation for “Avengers: Endgame” has depressed overall grosses for the Easter box office, leading to the lowest total for the holiday weekend in 14 years.
Overall, the domestic box office grossed an estimated $103 million this weekend, down 22% from last year’s Easter weekend. With “Avengers” expected to dominate the global box office next weekend, most studios have steered clear of releasing a movie this weekend to avoid getting ignored by audiences who can’t wait to see how the Marvel superheroes take down Thanos. The last time an Easter weekend was this low was in 2005, when the Sony comedy “Guess Who” opened to $20 million and the overall box office only reached $99 million.

With Disney and Marvel’s “Avengers: Endgame” gearing up to obliterate box office records, the rest of Hollywood is laying low on the film front.
“Endgame,” a culmination of sorts for the comic-book empire’s film saga, is expected to suck all the oxygen out of other movie theater auditoriums when it launches on April 26. For the most part, studios shied away from major releases even before Avengers in fear that rival movies could struggle to recoup ticket sales beyond opening weekend.
However, there was at least one studio brave enough to take on Disney, and that is, well, Disney. The Magic Kingdom is launching two movies this weekend, most notably, “Breakthrough,” the studio’s first Fox title since completing its $71 billion acquisition of 21st Century Fox. Disney also has “Penguins,” a documentary from the Buena Vista company’s Disneynature label. Both titles are getting a head start on the weekend by opening on Wednesday.

With “Unplanned” still performing well at the box office, the recent hot streak for Christian films could continue with Roxann Dawson’s “Breakthrough,” which is hitting theaters tomorrow ahead of Easter weekend
“Breakthrough” tells the story of a married couple (Chrissy Metz and Josh Lucas) who rely on their faith to pull through after their son falls through a frozen lake and ends up in a coma. The film is also a historic one for the film industry, as it will be the first film released by 20th Century Fox under ownership of Disney, which completed its acquisition of the 83-year-old studio last month. It will be one of the final films released through Fox 2000, which Disney is shutting down after it completes the release of its remaining films.

Breakout Docs: How Mister Rogers, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Identical Triplets Became Box Office Stars
It’s said that good things come in threes, and that seems to be the case in more than one respect for Neon’s latest documentary, “Three Identical Strangers.”
Tim Wardle’s film about identical triplets who were separated at birth and adopted by three different families, only to be reunited by chance years later, enjoyed the best per-screen-average for a documentary this year. It earned $171,503 over the weekend, while opening in just five locations — that translates to a mighty $34,301 per-theater average.
This summer has been especially rewarding for documentaries. “Three Identical Strangers” comes on the heels of a pair of sleeper hits, “Rbg” and “Won’t You Be My Neighbor.” It’s a rare summer where one documentary has already crossed the $10 million mark and a second non-fiction film is close behind. It’s even possible “Three Identical Strangers” could complete the trifecta.

‘Penguins’ Trailer: Disneynature’s Newest Documentary Is All About, You Guessed It, Penguins — Watch
If you need a new documentary that anthropomorphizes animals in your life, it would appear that Disneynature has you covered with “Penguins.” The film introduces us to Steve, whose quest for domestic bliss of the arctic variety is threatened by such predators as orcas and seals. Watch the trailer below.
Per the synopsis, “Penguins” is a “coming-of-age story about an Adélie penguin named Steve who joins millions of fellow males in the icy Antarctic spring on a quest to build a suitable nest, find a life partner and start a family. None of it comes easily for him, especially considering he’s targeted by everything from killer whales to leopard seals, who unapologetically threaten his happily ever after.”
Disneynature most recently released “Born in China” and “Ghost of the Mountains.” “Penguins” is due in theaters on April 19, 2019, which happens to be three days before Earth Day.

Pandas are God’s oversize Teddy bears, big and roly-poly in a so-cuddly-it’s-funny, designed-by-nature-for-Gund way. Their whole two-toned look — the snowy heads set off by adorable dabs of black — is raised to a unique-in-the-animal-kingdom level of huggability by the dark circles around their eyes, which evoke the sort of cartoon sadness that perhaps only a child’s love could heal. Pandas seem to be crying out for our affection, and for our protection too. And these days, they really need it. Squeezed out of their natural habitat (the overdevelopment of Chinese forests has pushed them further and further up into the mountains), crucially lacking in genetic diversity, pandas, as a species, are now struggling to find their biological place in the future.
It’s only natural that you go into a 3D IMAX movie called “Pandas” wanting to take a bath in fuzzy cuteness. Yet unlike last year’s “Born in China,...

Released in 1998, Disney's animated feature Mulan was based on a Chinese legend and followed the daughter of a famed warrior who impersonated a man in order to lead her people into battle. A live-action adaptation has been in development for a while now and gained momentum when director Niki Caro (The Zookeeper's Wife) came on board earlier this year. Caro says she intends to make "a big, girly martial arts epic. It will be extremely muscular and thrilling and entertaining and moving." Now the lead role has been cast. Liu Yifei (also known as Crystal Liu) will star as Mulan, according to Deadline. Born in China, she spent four years in the U.S. during her youth before returning to China and becoming a veteran of both the big and small screen, moving...

After July 2015 and 2016 saw increases from one year to the next, July 2017 took a step back, down 12.2% compared to 2016 with calendar grosses reaching $1.2 billion from 221 films compared to $1.37 billion last July. Leading the way was Sony's Spider-Man: Homecoming, which topped all releases bringing in $280 million in July, earning Sony the #1 spot for the month with six films grossing nearly $390 million. Overall, this marks the third month in a row to show a decline compared to 2016 with the summer movie season struggling and showing no sign of improvement in the month of August with the season currently pacing 11% behind 2016. Overall, August is likely to become the sixth month out of the first eight in 2017 to show a decline from one year to the next with 2017 currently -2% behind 2016. Happy Mother's Day y'all. Are you taking your mom to the movies? Does your mom even go to movies? (My mom does not unless I'm visiting her so it happens about once a year).
In its second week Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 dipped below 50% but that's par for the course for blockbusters which are super frontloaded now. It still handily took the weekend making more than the two new wide releases combined (Snatched and King Arthur). In limited release the top new films were Lowriders (starring Demian Bichir and Eva Longoria) with a good per screen average and the sniper drama The Wall which risked a nearly wide opening to uncertain results. We'll see how word of mouth goes.

This Was the Worst Box Office of 2017 — But ‘How to Be a Latin Lover’ and ‘Baahubali 2’ Were Amazing
This weekend was the nadir of what has become a bipolar year at the box office, but it comes with an extraordinary, if unsettling sidelight: Mass audience fare is no longer guaranteed, even with top stars and well-known IP.
“How to Be a Latin Lover” (Lionsgate) and “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion” (from previously unheralded Great India) ranked second and third, both over $10 million. Those are grosses better than not only Stx’s “The Circle” (which had the benefit of Emma Watson and Tom Hanks, and is based on Dave Eggers’ novel), but are also better than any new release on the same weekend last year. Studios concede the weekend before the new Marvel release in early April, but that’s also an opportunity that two smart distributors recognized.
That left “The Fate of the Furious” (Universal) as the default #1 again. $19 million for a third weekend, and $192 million total, is strong...

Saturday Am Update: As expected, it will be The Fate of the Furious atop the weekend box office once again. The film brought in an estimated $5.1 million on Friday and is expected to bring in about $18.5 million for the weekend. Coming in second is a bit of a surprise, however, as Lionsgate and Pantelion's How to be a Latin Lover stormed the box office on Friday to the tune of an estimated $3.9 million and is now expected to bring in no less than $12 million for its three-day opening. Third place could be a tight race, starting with Stx's The Circle, which brought in an estimated $3.2 million on Friday and is expected to make a little over $9 million for the weekend. Outperforming The Circle on Friday, however, was Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, which brought in an estimated $4.75 million (including $2.5 million from Thursday previews) and is also expected to bring in anywhere...

2017-04-24T04:52:37-07:00'Fate of the Furious' Races Past the Competition"The Fate of the Furious" sped into first place at the box office again, leaving new thriller "Unforgettable" and historical drama "The Promise" in the dust. Universal Pictures' eighth installment in "The Fast and the Furious" franchise earned $38.7 million over the weekend, down 61 percent from its debut, according to studio estimates Sunday. The new competition didn't stand a chance against the high-octane film, which had the biggest worldwide opening of all time last weekend. It's expected to cross $1 billion globally this week. Holdovers dominated the charts on this quiet weekend in theaters. "The Boss Baby" took second place with $12.8 million, and "Beauty and the Beast" landed in third with $10 million. Disney's animal documentary "Born in China" opened in fourth place, with $5.1 million from 1,508 locations. The two other new movies fared worse. Red the rest of this article at Nola.

Much to the surprise of nobody, last weekend’s The Fate of the Furious had little problem taking first place this weekend. This weekend saw the release of four films — Born in China, Unforgettable, Phoenix Forgotten, and Free Fire. As our own Weekend Warrior predicted last week, they none of them stood much chance against arctic submarine chases. All of the films — with the exception of Born in China — underperformed substantially, clearing the way for the usual suspects taking the lead once again.
Fate of the Furious took in $38.7 million. While it still managed to retain first place with little trouble, it dropped a hefty 60.8% in its second weekend, which is not an insubstantial drop. Given its big blockbuster nature, however, it wasn’t exactly unexpected. Plus, given that the film is already creeping on $1 billion worldwide, there is no mistaking this is a huge success for the long-running franchise.

While good news could be just around the corner with “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” two weeks away, this weekend it’s hard to find much to cheer about. Combined, five new wide openings could barely muster $17 million, while the second weekend of “The Fate of the Furious” saw a 61 percent drop.

This weekend saw several new films hitting theaters including the trashy Unforgettable (reviewed), the epic The Promise, and Ben Wheatley's Free Fire (reviewed). Apart from the Disney Nature documentary Born in China and the almost-wide expansion of last week's newbie The Lost City of Z, none made much of an impact with moviegoers, as the holdovers just won't quit filling theaters. Boss Baby and Going in Style, for example, only dropped 20% in their 4th and 3rd weekends respectively.
I spent the weekend hitting the Tribeca Film Festival (our reviews have already begun) but the highlight by far was the rare opportunity to see Lina Wertmüller's Seven Beauties (1975) which is best known to Oscar buffs as the first instance of a woman being nominated for Best Director. The film was more amazing than I was prepared for. We're talking a tonally daring, politically charged, sexually crazed, harrowing and hilarious World War II movie.

The top of this weekend's box office looks a lot like last weekend as the top three films remain the same, once again headlined by The Fate of the Furious as it closes in on $1 billion worldwide. As for the weekend's new releases, Disney's Born in China topped the list with the best start for a Disneynature title since the $10.6 million opening for 2012's Chimpanzee. Otherwise, WB's Unforgettable, Open Road's The Promise, Cinelou's Phoenix Forgotten and A24's Free Fire all under-performed. At #1 for a second weekend in a row is Universal's The Fate of the Furious, which performed mostly as expected, dropping 61% in its second weekend and bringing in an estimated $38.6 million as its domestic cume now climbs to $163.6 million. Internationally, the film continued its impressive overseas run bringing in an estimated $163.4 million from 65 territories as its overseas total balloons to $744.8 million for a global cume that stands at $908.4 million.

Is there anything cuter than a baby panda? John Krasinski doesn't think so (and neither do we). The actor narrates the latest Disneynature film Born in China (tickets are on sale now, opens April 21), in which we get a bird’s-eye view of gorgeous, mysterious and untouched landscapes filled with endearing animal inhabitants. Filmed in the Chinese countryside, Born in China follows three stories – an elusive snow leopard mom trying to provide for her two...

After winning the Oscar for 2014’s “Big Hero 6,” producer Roy Conli was lured to what seems to be a far-flung project: a Disneynature doc, “Born in China,” which explores the life cycles of wild pandas and other native Chinese wildlife. However, he said that it was less about the animals and more about their collective capacity to communicate complex emotions and ideas.
“I’ve always loved the structure of multiple stories,” said Conli, a longtime Disney Animation executive who famously mounted the premiere of “Angels in America” at the Mark Taper Forum in 1992. “There are multiple characters that you need to fall in love with, and they will add up to one story. That was the same with this. You had five species, but you concentrated on three animal families.”
Other Disneynature movies have had more singular topics (“Bears,” “Monkey Kingdom”), but director Lu Chuan’s “Born in China...

Hey, look, pandas! That’s the marketing message behind Disneynature’s Born in China, which has a trailer so stuffed with images of cute and fuzzy animals your insulin levels may rise to coma-inducing levels. Don’t be fooled. Even though the movie is a Disney production, that doesn’t mean it’s one extended, cute fur baby YouTube video. Instead, the film is far closer to Nat Geo turf, and while there are some select cutaways early in the film (we may see a deer dragged around, but we don’t watch it being killed), there is no compunction by the filmmakers to prettify the harsh...read more...

Jane Goodall‘s love for animals started long before her first encounter with a chimpanzee.
The legendary primatologist tells People she was “born loving animals” and after reading Tarzan of the Apes at just 10 years old, she knew she had found her calling.
“I decided I would have to go to Africa and live with animals and write books about them,” she says. “Eventually I was invited by a school friend and met the famous anthropologist, paleontologist Louis Leakey and he was the one who said would I go study not just any animal but the ones most like us,...

Here’s something to remember next time you go to a big trivia fund-raising night. If there’s a movie or Oscar category, one of the questions may be: “What film maker (or producer) has won the most Academy Awards?”. The answer is (and will be for a long time to come) Walt Disney. Now, as you jot down that name, you may think that all that gold was netted by his animation work, the classic features and short subjects. Well, a lot of it, but not all. From 1948 to 1960 Disney dominated the Best Live-Action Short Subject category with his “True-Life Adventures” series. Lots of baby boomers may be familiar with them, not from theatrical showings (usually paired with the re-release of those animated features), but from that NBC Sunday night staple, “Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color”. Several shorts would be edited together for the hour-long shows. The...

It doesn’t take much to make John Krasinski cry.
When the 37-year-old actor was asked to narrate Disneynature’s animal documentary Born in China shortly after welcoming his second child with wife Emily Blunt, the actor says he knew he didn’t stand a chance.
“I relate probably way too much,” he tells People in this week’s issue of the documentary, which follows three animal families in China. “The movie is about what it takes to raise kids, the sacrifices that need to be made and the moment of letting them go.”
As a father, Krasinski says he immediately connected to the story.

Saturday Am Update: The Fate of the Furious is right on pace with expectations, bringing in an estimated $11.2 million on Friday, en route to a $35-38 million second weekend. Meanwhile, the film will remain the #1 film in the world this weekend as its international total as of last night is $636.3 million and the international weekend estimate is currently $171 million from 65 territories as it looks to top $910 million by Sunday and will cross $1 billion worldwide next week. Of the new releases, it looks like Disneynature's Born in China will lead the way after it brought in $1.59 million on Friday, on its way to an opening weekend three-day around $4.6 million or so. Opening day audiences gave the film an "A-" CinemaScore, which is pretty much typical for these features. Warner's Unforgettable is proving to be anything but as it brought in a meager $1.67 million on Friday and is looking at a $4.4 million opening weekend.

Another April, another Disneynature release, and we’ve now seen enough of these films to pretty much know what to expect: The cinematography will be gorgeous, featuring lots of breathtaking time-lapse footage of clouds rolling over the savannah or the tundra or wherever; over-adorable narration, in which an A-list actor bestows human names upon the wild-animal “characters” and waxes effusive over a mother’s love in the wild; and a sanitized, Disney-fied version of nature in which apex predators usually have their dinner just out of camera range. “Born in China” doesn’t flip the script in any significant way,...

2017-04-20T07:12:18-07:00New Movies No Match for 'Fate of the Furious'
It's looking like a forgettable weekend at the box office in the lull before summer gets underway on May 5 with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
Holdover The Fate of the Furious is expected to clobber a handful of new films that open Friday, including Katherine Heigl's erotic thriller Unforgettable, Armenian genocide drama The Promise, starring Christian Bale and Oscar Isaac, action-comedy Free Fire and sci-fi thriller Phoenix Forgotten. Disney also opens its latest nature documentary, Born in China.
Fate of the Furious is expected to earn $45 million or more in its second weekend after scoring the biggest global launch of all time with $535 million. (All eyes will be on the Universal film to see how much it drops.)

No dramatic tension here: “The Fate of the Furious” (Universal) again will be the top box-office performer in its second weekend, continuing its worldwide push to over $1 billion. Even with a steep fall (likely 55% to 60%), it could end up grossing double what we expect from the five new releases combined.
The next two weeks will see eight new mainstream releases, an unusually high number, and all are standalone, non-franchise entries. That’s rare these days. But unlike “Get Out,” “Hidden Figures,” and “La La Land” — three original movies that grossed $150 million or more at home in the last five months — none of the upcoming titles should do more than minor business.

Welcome to this week’s “Preview Reel” column, where we look at the week’s upcoming wide release movies. The Fate of the Furious made history last weekend as it captured the biggest worldwide opening ever with a staggering $532 million. The film somewhat disappointed stateside with $98.8 million, but Universal is undoubtedly pleased with the worldwide result. Many studios saw this coming and decided to stay away from the Furious wake. As a result, we have a pretty slow week of moderate openers including Born in China, The Promise, and Unforgettable.

What we are excited about: Although not quite a yearly tradition, DisneyNature has released six nature documentaries over the Earth Day weekend since 2009. This year will bring us Born in China, which looks to be just what we have come to expect from the series. It looks to boast beautiful shots of cute animals and narrated by John Krasinski.

Disneynature revived the true-life documentary tradition of Walt Disney in 2009 and faithfully has delivered a new, and increasingly wondrous, adventure around every Earth Day — from Earth, Oceans, African Cats and Chimpanzee to Bears, Monkey Kingdom and now Born in China. Some of the proceeds from the first week’s box office for these films goes right back into the cause, a nice and rare gesture from a major studiom where it all seems to be about money these days. Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
Will This April Dump Weekend See Any New Movie Open Over $10 Million?
After the decent opening of last week’s The Fate of the Furious--though not quite as much as I predicted--it’s going to be hard for any new movie to make a mark against its second weekend even if it drops 55% or more this weekend, which is very likely.
Probably the best bet to make money this weekend is the thriller Unforgettable (Warner Bros.), which pits Kathryn Heigl against Rosario Dawson and is the directorial debut by producer Denise Di Novi (Crazy, Stupid, Love). It also stars Geoff Stults as the ex-husband of Heigl’s character Tessa, who becomes engaged to Dawson’s Julia, making her the stepmom to the former’s daughter,...

When it comes to making amazing nature documentaries, Disneynature makes it look effortless. The truth is, it takes a ton of work, patience and even bravery to pull off the perfect shots. Disneynature's latest, Born in China, might just be the studio's most challenging film yet. As narrator John Krasinski explains, filmmakers shot four different animal species in four different habitats in four different seasons, dealing with harsh weather and terrain for months on end. Narrated by John Krasinski (“13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi,” NBC’s “The Office,” “Amazon’s “Jack Ryan”), Disneynature’s new True Life Adventure film “Born In China” takes an epic journey into the wilds of China where few people have ever ventured. Following the stories of three animal families, the film transports audiences to some of the most extreme environments on Earth to witness some of the most intimate moments ever captured in a nature film. A doting panda bear mother guides her growing baby as she begins to explore and seek independence. A two-year-old golden monkey who feels displaced by his new baby sister joins up with a group of free-spirited outcasts. And a mother snow leopard—an elusive animal rarely caught on camera—faces the very real drama of raising her two cubs in one of the harshest and most unforgiving environments on the planet.
